Cobra meeting held to discuss plan of action if it comes to the UK (assuming it hasn't already). This is another consequence of globalisation and mass immigration, people with diseases from all over the world travelling all over the world, what could possibly go wrong?

we will be lucky to get a vaccine in a year (more likely to be 18 months).

Confirmed cases is estimated to double every week (again a conservative estimate).

Keep an eye on this:
http://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Uk update just after 2pm and Italy update just after 5pm.

If your pandemic estimates are as good as your attendance ones we should all be alright UD!

Thats a 40% increase in total cases in a day.

So much for new cases only doubling weekly.

At the back of my mind I used to scoff at the suggestion that scientists were scared at the notion that bringing back something from outer space could unleash a deadly virus that could wipe out the entire planet.

Not saying that this is anything like that but what has amazed me is the reality of how quickly this could happen and that there is nothing we can do about it.

Plus it still isn't much comfort from comparing x amount of people dieing from this or that in the same time scale especially as very few had heard of Coronavirus until this year.

I went to bed concerned about Coronavirus and woke up to a particularly nasty letter from the hospital telling me that during recent tests for something else they have found something else seriously wrong for me to have to worry about - I am at the conclusion that everything is in a race to kill us all whilst we just sit back and wait for the winner.

Yet today in the UK Approximately 450 people will die of cancer and a similar amount from heart disease.

Makes you think doesn't it.

Just. a bit of perspective amoungst the mass hysteria (media created)

The headline in the Mail Online was a good one the other day.

'500,000 COULD DIE'

-D

I googled to see how many died from Swine flu and Avian Flu.. There was apparently a report or document written suggesting Swine flu would kill 75k people in the uk, I think they were a bit out with their thinking. That said, this is a different thing altogether so who knows? I have to say, I get what Alan says about the media.....Now then, do I go to the match tomorrow? Should I go on my holiday on Monday? Hmmmm?

Hopefully not as bad as Spanish Flu.

"two per cent
Top of the list is the 1918 Spanish Flu, an influenza pandemic with a fatality rate of two per cent or more which killed at least 50 million people globally – many more than the total deaths in the First World War."

A ring a ring of roses or 3 blind mice would be more appropraite!

As for no deaths in the last 24 hours - the data released at 2pm is only up till 9am today.

Italian results just out - 778 new cases and 49 new deaths.

There are four players at Brondby in Denmark being quarantined and one of them caught it on a break to Amsterdam. Nowt to do with us but a cousin was over there last weekend and she works at Whitehaven Hospital and her husband at Sellafield so if they've caught it the virus will be all over the spot by now.

Just been an American guy on Ch 4 news who's been working on viruses for 20 years he said we haven't seen anything like this since the Spanish Flu of 1918....it worries him the infectioness of it, this CV. The Government have invested £20m in working on an anti-viral but it won't be ready till the autumn.
I can probably understand the widespread rate of infection in China and Iran possibly..countries who keep stuff under raps..but Italy is a queer one and they still haven't found the first carrier.
Still 3 flights a week coming into the UK a week from China...which is worrying at best.

I always get the feeling the news like to find the folk are most likely to be the harbingers of doom.....It could be as bad as Spanish flu? It might even be worse? But.....it might be nowhere near as bad too!

Just been reading another doom mongering piece then on express.co.uk by Paul Baldwin. He basically says the chances that a bat that ate a virus ridden snake, that was then made into bat soup in a Wuhan Fish market, that then mutated across the species just as it was being served to that little Chinese guy for his dinner.....er is very unlikely x a million.....when coincidentally The Wuhan Institute of virology is a 5 minute walk from the fish market.
This when other viruses like SARS Mers Bird Flu etc also originated in ...er China.

Its flights from Italy you need to worry about. China have banned flights coming in from Italy.

It's expected to peak in 3 months with another 3 months to subside.

So if we're in the containment phase people off incoming flights need tested at the airports and told to self isolate till the results are back, if your a UK resident. If not forced isolation should happen or return to Italy asap
