Day 4 has started with the prediction of folding like a pack of cards happening...poor stuff

Time to regroup and prepare for the next one

Jesus wept. Not looking good now for the series. We've got to manage to put a few good days together rather than the odd one to give us a chance.
Wood, Woakes and Robinson at least give us a bit of hope, as does having Anderson & Broad to come in.
Stokes was a gamble that didn't pay off, What was it, 15 no balls in a handful of overs? Not on that.
Can't see how Burns can retain his place and we can't rely on Root alone.
At least there's the footie to lift our spirits....

2 sessions won in 4 days. The Aussies won the other 10 plus they saved the last day.

Our only plan is to bowl the Aussies out cheaply for our hopeless batsmen to try and overhaul their score. Which won't happen.

We know exactly how the Aussies will bowl yet the batsmen still play rash shots and get themselves out.

Hopeless but, predictable.

Neither Anderson or Broad have great records in Australia anyway. However that first morning was perfect for at least one of them -not resting both and batting!
Root really isn't a great captain (and his delusional post match interviews always remind me of Stephen Presley) but what are the alternatives? At least his place in the side is secure. I think that Buttler or Woakes would do well as captain but neither is a nailed down place.
And this is the issue full stop. Over the past decade or so the ECB has utterly neglected domestic red ball cricket and we're now witnessing the consequences. That is probably the strongest batting line up we can put out and it's woefully not good enough.

It’s beyond me how you can rest players in the first rubber of a 5 match series unless we’re really going for the last one to save a 5-0 whitewash

Cummins out as he’s been pinged as a close contact so Smith back as Captain.

Prob knock a double ton to really hammer it home…

77 runs off the first 40 overs.

Another day lost. Time for a specialist keeper. No specialist spinner. The bowlers have toiled without much luck at all. Tomorrow could be completely demoralizing.

Would settle for a draw already.

England's bright spells are too brief and only come once they are already well behind in the game. Buttler's drop was terrible but Australia were already in complete control. All this "it's a key passage in the game" when it's 200-2 and nine times out of ten you've already lost.

Jimmy Anderson said they would be 'happy' to restrict Australia to 400 - 450. Smith was still batting at the time. The Aussies no. 8 and 9 have a 50+ partnership. This is becoming a sick joke and I fully expect the Aussies bowlers to show ours how to bowl line and length. They want to take wickets, we want to save runs.

I'm afraid Root's captaincy must be questioned.

Excellent session from Root and Malan. Hope they carry on after the break…

Wasn't expecting that, plenty of hope on my part but, not much expectation. The Aussies are missing Cummins and Hazlewood but we have shown some fight at last.
A long way to go but a good start.

Rather than finish us off, the Aussies are using us for practice.
Embarrassing to say the least.

Will be surprised if this match goes to a 5th day. Same old problems and no answers.

Big decisions required for the 3rd test. You could drop half the team in the hope you might get it right.

The bowlers need to bowl at the stumps not 4th or 5th stump. The batsmen need to learn to leave the ball.

Stokes looks injured but, still battles on. He needs a rest. Root appears to be struggling to think clearly.

Inevitable, unfortunately.

Another collapse...no surprise

The obsession with white ball slog fests and not enough proper cricket should really come home to roost now... Where is that Michael Atherton type of stubborn batsmen that can hang around to piss bowlers off when its needed to calm things down?

Nobody can do that anymore in the England team.

ECB get yer arses sorted and concentrate on the traditional cricket game....not slogfests to appease for more money.

Test match cricket is the pinnacle and we deserve a better equipped team to compete against the Aussies...or better still just forfeit the rest and fly home than get more humiliated

The Aussies play as much white ball cricket but seem to manage test cricket okay, and we have far more players to choose from.

It's game management as much as anything. Australia have 2 of their 3 main bowlers out and those that come in bowl to the same plan.

They can occupy the crease until they want to have a bowl in favourable conditions for their bowlers.

Silverwood and the coaches have a lot to answer for. They must be able to see where the problems are.

Another familiar trope from the England script, a bit of battling resistance when it's already far too late and in the end we are comfortably beaten regardless.

Root seems to think they can still regain the Ashes. I thought he'd been hit in the nads!!
