I got the impression that Simmo wanted to up the minutes of the proposed starting team as the friendlies got closer to kick off.
Plenty of games and no doubt injuries to contend with.
Devitt is a perfect player to have waiting in the wings,, assuming he is happy with that.
Git to be better than playing for Barrow.

It's still a no-brainer to give him a contract and now he's proved his fitness doubly so, I don't understand the delay.

His versatility is key, for me. He can provide cover for either flank, play as a deeper lying midfielder, in the "ten" role, as a "false nine" or in a front three.

With an injury or suspension or two in central midfield he would, at the very least, provide excellent cover - and he obviously wants to play for us.

If he's proved his fitness then I would agree it would be a no brainer. I am a Devitt fan and would love it to be so.

But I seem to recall from his own and the club's comments at the end of last season that a contract offer would be dependent on his fitness. PSFs are not always the best indicator of this.

I hope he's fit and a contract is agreed but I understand why it may not be cut and dried just now.

Maybe he wants to start games and it doesn't look like he will, hence the delay.

The team isn’t set in stone for the whole season on day 1. There’s no way Simpson will be saying to any potential signings (Devitt included) that they’ll be starting or not starting games.

Ideally the club would want to give him a contract incentivised towards playing time, giving his injury history. Whereas Devitt would understandably want as much guaranteed basic as possible.

I’d imagine Simmo wants to sign him up, but they’ve used preseason to judge his fitness and to see where the balance should be.

Hopefully it all works out and he signs up for another season. A fit Devitt could easily make the difference between mid-table and play offs

He is a good player and he did improve the team when he joined in January. I do wonder though if we can't find better.
If we are going to sign 32 year olds with injury issues let's get ones who can coach as well then they are contributing even when they're not playing

My understanding from Simmo’s recent interview is there in negotiations over a deal rather than still making a decision on Devitts fitness.

So it’s a pay as you play offer by the sound of it. I doubt he’ll accept to be honest as I’m sure he’ll be able to get a proper contract somewhere else.

47 Games in 3 Season’s at 5 Club’s and now 32yo suggests it might not be that easy though?

Hmm I reckon if he’s willing to drop a level, he’d get a proper contract down there easily.

Hopefully the fact he’s happy here will play a part in his decision. Maybe if it’s a basic wage then an appearance bonus topping it up to a proper wage rather than just a basic ‘pay as you play’ he might be willing. We’ll see.

If you couple his age with his injury record, I think we’d be the only football league team to offer him a contract.

He won’t start with a fully fit squad, however there’s 50+ games and 5 subs to consider so he’ll get minutes if he stays fit.

I pray we haven't insulted JD with a derisory offer

He is a decent player, but the stats above by CCU aren't good. Very risky if he gets injured again.

Is he desperate to play for the club or
Has he had no other offers from North West clubs? He's Manchester based.

For the first time since Simpson came back, I find myself disagreeing with him here.
A fit Jamie Devitt is the best midfielder at the club. Coupled with the fact he loves it here, and is desperate to remain here

Simpson set him a challenge to come back fit and willing to work hard after the summer.
Devitt did all that, and has done everything Simpson has asked of him over the last few weeks to prove himself.
The club have kept Devitt hanging in suspense for weeks about whether they were going to offer him anything or not.
While all at the same time bemoaning the fact that we can't get players to sign for us.

Then after weeks of keeping Devitt waiting, they finally offer him something - then give him a paltry 48 hours to take it or leave it.
Totally out of order.

You make a good point, Mush. I do like JD, like you say, he wants to play here and he's still got the ability.
That said what goes around... He rejected (and rightfully so - more money, better prospects) our contract offer at the end of 2019, to move to Blackpool - Which, on hindsight, was a mistake, given the manager change and subsequent injuries, which have put him in the position he's in now.
Really hoping he stays, but if it's pay as you play, it's a gamble for him, given the injury history.

Even if he plays 20-25 games this season he's worth a contract. Would take him even if played as a sub coming on after an hour every game.
Not all that many in the league with his technical ability, guile and vision.
Wonder if he's been offered a deal until Jan to see how it goes with an option?

I’d also like to keep Devitt and hope he stays but I don’t think it’s that clear cut.

No questioning his attitude or that he’s put the effort in, but the offer will be correctly based on the what he can contribute as a 32 year old with his current level of fitness, not the player he was 4 or 5 seasons ago.

With the best will in the world he is always going to be a gamble with his injury record and our budget is limited.

Really hope he stays. We need his experience around training & the club in general as much as his on field capabilities.
We need goals this season. He helps

I suspect the club will be looking at wages divided by the number of expected minutes on the pitch in deciding whether Devitt, or any player provides value for money. By that criterion a payment by appearance model, or a low basic salary topped up by a more generous appearance bonus seems reasonable for a player who has had long term injury problems.

That said, I accept that any player could suffer a long term injury in any game.

He’s definitely not the greedy type, based on when he last left us. All he wanted was a 2 year deal, same wage. We were only dishing out one year deals and he/she had just had a baby. That is why he left, looking for some security- not in pursuit of more money.

I seem to be in the minority that isn't fussed about whether Devitt signs or not. All this talk of him making a massive difference would've been correct 3 or 4 years ago when he left but prior to his spell at Morecambe before joining us and since leaving us for Blackpool, he has had a pretty average L2 career. I'm sure he's a good character and if we sign him on the deal Simpson has offered then it makes sense but I really don't see him being the difference between mid-table and the play-offs. In the games he played last season he looked neat and tidy but in a poor team.

I think he adds a lot of what we were missing last season & what is required for a top 10 finish. Set piece delivery, assists, goals & experience.
Guy looked a better player along side Devitt

Hopefully Hilton will hit the ground running but that’s expecting a lot from a young player in his first season. Devitt s experience will help us hit the ground running.

My fear is conference money will be too hard to turn down compared to a pay for play deal.

We don't have the cash to pay a player £75k a year when that player will be fit for an hour a game for 6 weeks, then be out injured for months. His set piece delivery, assists, goals & experience aren't much use when he is in the stands. Pay as you play, or Jamie mitigates the risk by coaching, scouting etc, which would probably be good for him if it leads him into a career after playing
