I'd go for 4-4-2

Collin

Liddle
Gerrard
Parkes
Grainger

Thomas
Etuhu
Devitt
O'Hare (Would like Kennedy in but he's clearly not in favour by our scottish supremo)

Simpson
Hope

That's the team I had in mind with Devitt pulling the strings in the middle, Thomas and O'Hare flying down the wings, crossing on to Simpson's nut and Hope being his usual nuisance with a free role off his shoulder.

I'm basing this mainly on playing players in their best positions.
We haven't really got a proper number 9 just yet but do have a fair few number 10s.
FGR like to play and at BP we didn't get a kick for the 1st half hour until we tweaked things and got some more bodies in the MF.
This formation gives us the option of flooding that area if needed.
Ideally, Etuhu and Jones do the fetching and carrying leaving the front 4 to play.
Devitt sits just behind Slater, Scougall and O'Hare who play narrow - about the width of the 18 yard box.
Slater scored 2 belters away at Swindon coming in from the left.
This 3 would play in front of the centre halves, not on them, and might cause confusion as the CHs would have no one to pick up.
Our front 4 are all very comfortable with the ball at their feet.
They would not play with their back to goal pushing up against the CHs but would be on the half turn and could cause problems linking up and running at the centre halves.
All front 4 look to have the ability to shoot from the edge of the box and as a team this year we've done well with goals from outside the area.
It's got its downsides.
There's no focal point, we'd have to hit the longer ball into areas rather than into a striker and there's little width so it could get congested.
Danny and Liddle could offer some width coming forward though if needed.
It's going to be windy again and the ball should be played on the deck.
This formation would give us the numbers to get hold of the midfield and would be a unique challenge for FGR and it would get Devitt at the heart of things.
May as well play to our strengths - 4 tricky, skilful, quick footed, good ball playing attacking midfielders running forward at the defence.
If it's not working after half an hour or the 1st half, Hope, Simpson Thomas and Kennedy are on the bench to go more conventional or to change things.

That would be a spectacular team selection and certainly not one the opposition would see coming (unless they read this board of course).

I reckon if that team was published on the various social media platforms at 2PM on Saturday an absolute meltdown would ensue.

Who would be a manager, eh? :)

I think you're probably right!
The problem is that SP has said that Hallam isn't a CF and judging by the subs recently feels it's too soon for Simpson, so I'm not sure what will happen.
Piece of cake being a manager, isn't it?!

I have no clue which way Pressley will go with this one either. Let’s hope he can pull a rabbit out of the hat!

I agree that Hallam isn’t a CF. I don’t think Simpson is anywhere near the level required, but in the absence of anything else, I think I would be tempted to throw him in and give him a shot. If he goes for it, I just hope they play to his strengths.

If it fails, I suppose we can change it after we realise we got it wrong. That is after all what we have had to do in every game since Pressley joined, so we should be used to it by now!

What are Simpson’s strengths? I ask because I have probably only seen him play for a combined 30 minutes.

Given his lack of ability (I think he is miles of the required level) then his strength is...

He is tall! And can win a header. I can’t comment on the accuracy of said headers as a lot of this is theory. I think all he can do is win headers and we hope to get onto second balls in and around the area / final third of the pitch.

Sounds dreadful, but I think it is the only way we can play it.

Simpson has got to start as he's the only striker we have and get Jones in midfield with Etuhu. Maybe rest Slater.

I'd rest both Slater & O'Hare and start with Kennedy & Jones. Canna be any worse than Tuesday.
