The Squad for 2019/20

More
01 Apr 2019 19:00 - 16 May 2019 08:16 #1 by CCU
The Squad for 2019/20 was created by CCU
So far we’ve the following confirmed as signed on for next Season:

GK - Collin
DF - Gillesphey
MID - Etuhu
FWD - Hope, McCarron

Also Branthwaite is signed up, though he’ll likely continue with his second year of YTS before becoming a full pro in Summer 2020.

Who do we keep? Who do we release? Do we go after any of our Loanees we’ve had this Season on Permanent deals?

Big, big Summer ahead...

Win or Lose, Up The Blues!

If we dont go up I can't see Devitt signing - hes the most important one to keep if we can.

Aston Villa will be wanting O'Hare to play league 1 football next season so can't see him being here either.

Kennedy, Liddle will probably be let go as well as they are on higher contracts.

Of the loanees, I’d try and get Nadesan obviously. I’d say we’re unlikely to get Yates or Sowerby. I’d also go for Thomas as i expect he’ll be available and I think he’ll get better the more he plays.

Unless there is regime change, the playing budget will see another 25pc shaved off-read the chairman’s notes to the 10 month old accounts.Put yourself in their position-every pound loaned us another pound of personal guarantee.

As JP noted, the Club is shrinking

If they do shave of 25% of the playing budget crowds will be down by 25% when we are battling relegation. The Cycle will then continue with further cuts.

Thomas still has a year left at Sheff U and even if they let him go you'd think he'd get more money elsewhere. In a good team I think he'd be a good player. He's been a tad unlucky playing for Notts C for the first half of the season and us lot for second half!

Devitt, Liddle, Parkes, Jones, Kennedy and Grainger will be moving on next season but I think Miller and Gerrard might stop on.

I too think Nadesan might eventually end up here.

It'll be a lot of work for whoever is in charge. I've a feeling it might be a Scot but not the present one. :-D

How's your mission to drive him out going Barry?

He's not going to miss your £21 on matchdays with £17.1 million under the bed. :-D

Would like to add Thomas and Parkes to that list. (Thomas having a crap first Half of season may help us)

I can see DG and possibly Miller staying too.

Obviously would like Devitt. We should be working on this now. If we have anything about us, we’d be tapping up Nadeson and Yates.

Then a few new faces, all signed early in time for productive preseason.

If the temporary custodians had been just that and kept us at the top end of league 1 pushing to get into the Championship found a buyer instead of their actual long term ownership plan all this budget talks and cutting budgets would be moot. The budgets need to be cut due to the fact they weren't temporary custodians after all and their inept leadership/management skills...

Defence needs a major rebuild. Old and slow seems to be the general consensus, with most in their early 30’s.

Gillesphey is already signed up, none of the others are. Be interesting to see who, if any, are offered deals.

Can’t see Gerrard remaining, likely get a deal nearer home?

We could have had Yates if we matched Rotherams wage demands when he went back. Probably could have had Nadesen too.

Instead, we do a pr stunt and make a derisory last minute (It wasn't!) offer that would never be accepted and get a bunch of crocks instead!

At least we’re not Stockport

This is the more likely scenario unfortunately.

Like I think Tashy said - sign a crock and don't be amazed when he gets injured, he was injured when we signed him.

That has got to be the worst January transfer window ever, we moaned at the Curle one when we in the promotion hunt but at least Proctor managed to play some games and he at least managed to sign Liddle (although he had issues at the time and played shite).

Who is messing up here, the manager, Holdsworth or the owners and EWM?

Nobody seems to know, but if there is no cash then we are employing Holdsworth to do nothing as he cannot sign anyone or is he the one restricting the manager?

Answers needed on Friday on BBC RC if he turns up, no anecdotes please just pertinent questions and hard facts - he can turn on his after dinner speech stuff when we are riding high in the league thanks.

I assume Jones, Glendon and Bennett will be gone. Jones did not do himself any favours getting sent off when he was given a chance. Parkes, Liddle, Devitt, Grainger I would think will get offers but reduced from Keith's time. From the newbies Arthur and Scougall haven't done much to impress, I don't think they'll be missed, Grant might get an offer but I can't imagine it will be a good one. Then the new manager will look to bring in half a dozen on loan to boost numbers at a minimal cost.

Who is still here? Collin, Grey, Gillesphey, Hope, Etuhu, McCarron

Not sure why people are saying if we offered Yates money he would come. It wasn't up to him. He's under contract to Rotherham so they get to choose where he goes. They were very clear, if we don't get a new striker in he stays in Yorkshire. Same with Nadesan at Fleetwood. Different in the summer when contracts expire

Be interesting to see if Rotherham see a future for Yates in Lg 1.

Of our players who's contracts are up, I'd let go: Glendon, Liddle, Kennedy, Bennett

Offer contracts to:, Gerrard, Parkes,, Jones, Devitt and possibly Grant and Miller

We should try and sign Thomas definitely, Cullen, Yates if we have the opportunity and obviously I would love O'Hare too but I'm aware he's probably too good for us. Happy for Slater and Simpson to leave.

Can't decide on Scougall as yet. Gnahoua I know nothing of.

Then we need to sign competition in every position.

If Rotherham has stayed up we could have possibly got Yates but can't see it now.

O'Hare & Devitt will only possibly stay if we go up to League 1.

If there are further cuts I can see a relegation battle next season.

Of those who are actually ours, and out of contract...

I’d offer a deal to:
Gray - By all means capable if steps up according to our GK Coach, maybe let him play in the Cups for some action?
Miller - Perfect for the bench IMO, as he can cover both FB positions.
Scougall - There’s a player in this lad for me. Played very little football in the first half of the Season and it shows.
Devitt - Don't even need to say!

Undecided:
Liddle - Fairly reliable but has looked jaded recently. We do need experience though?
Parkes - On his day, great at this level. But we’ve not had enough of those for me this Season.
Jones - Ditto. You know what you’re getting but has his time gone here?
Grant - Not seen enough. Simple as!
Gnahoua - See Grant!

Release:
Gerrard - Ropey few weeks sadly, and likely new fitness drive would destroy him!
Kennedy - Sadly Saturday was likely the last we’ll see of JK. A real shame.
Glendon - A letdown. Done nothing to suggest he’s worthy of another deal.

Some interesting decisions ahead!

Yup. On the grounds we nearly made the play-offs I think they will offer most of the existing players contracts on much reduced terms then we'll see maybe 10 young lads, 19-22 coming in, of whom about 7 will be on loan. I could see Thomas joining on season long. Parkes, Liddle, Miller could all be here. Devitt maybe, everyone thinks he will be off, but he has played hot and cold. I can't see O'Hare dropping back to the 4th division unless he has loved it so much, he begs to come back. Heard a wee rumour we had asked about Sid Nelson who I believe is out of contract in the summer, centre back, knows James Brown

Even if we did go up I don't think Villa would let O'Hare come back to us. He's clearly not going to be short of clubs that would love to have him and a change/step up in facilities and coaching should be the next step for him.

Do people actually want/expect us to be signing players for a transfer fee when there are hundreds of players out there who are available on a free transfer and are potentially just as good?

I think only 3 players in League 2 moved with a transfer fee last season - Boudewijn, Pell and someone else I can't remember - Akinde, maybe?
Almost becoming a thing of the past to buy a player at this level.
So many players available on loan or out of contract.
For me the issue is getting the balance right with loans and contracted players.
Returning short term loans cost us this year.
It was interesting to hear Tommy Wright at the forum talk about this and this is where judgement of a player and luck comes in.
He made the point that if you get players on longer loans and it doesn't work out you are stuck with them - eg Glendon, Campbell, etc.
It's a difficult balance to strike. You could take the view that we'll only take players on season long loans but run the risk of not getting players whose clubs will only sanction half season deals.
We have to learn from this year.
We played more loan players than any other side and this left us too exposed.

Do people actually want/expect us to be signing players for a transfer fee when there are hundreds of players out there who are available on a free transfer and are potentially just as good?

Theres a reason most of these players are available for free and thats that they're crap.

Stockport want 50k for Warburton i.d sign him tomorrow you.d get your 50k back by paying him lower wages over the two years than youd have to pay a 30 goal a season lad from league two who.ll think he.s the next big thing whereas a lad like Warburton just wants to be given a chance.

NCF Theres plenty of ways of sending players back you have on season-long deals if they're not working out. You just need to be a little imaginative.
