Barrow Iprovement ....When are we going to wake up ?? was created by Onlyfoolsandhorses
If anyone looks at the conference table right now it’s quite clear that barrow will be odds on to come into the football league, How can a club with less money, less crowds , shit stadium be doing so well ?? When are we going to wake up and start worrying that we could go down ?
I can’t be arsed blaming managers but currently 10 games in for beech and there s no improvement so what’s happening on the training field ? Something must be happening to barrow on the train field ! I hear people saying Gav Skelton is good and players like him but that’s not showing othe field with quality play and surelyits down o the training we’re doing as a first team, what’s new with beech’s training that’s showing on the pitch,
Barrow must be doing something right on the training field and they train at Rochdale Academy !! It’s farcical.
We’re supposedly once again paying ridiculous wages to players like hope who is a absolute shell of a player from last season.
So when are we going to wake up because once this transfer window closes that’s it !!! We need 4 good signings.

Two Words

Ian Evett

A manager who quite simply gets it

Who we should have just gone out and done whatever it took to get him in the summer.

We pay players more money than we should be paying because we want them to train in Carlisle. Barrow have saved money and managed to attract good players because they train in Rochdale.

If the rumours about Webster being on 1800 are true Barrow pay two players more money than that.

Reality is they might take a few fans from kendal region.

Their owners are everything local owners should be... engagement, community, building etc....

Add into the mix a class manager whose built a team of hard workers and their doing really well.

What’s helped them the most is they trust Evatt, he identified Quigley and said I want him, they trusted him and outlayed a 3 year deal, everyone else offered 2.

Personally couldn’t give a toss about about a team who are about 70 miles away and only in Cumbria because it got put here due to the local Govt reforms in the mid-70’s...

It’s not about giving a toss, it’s about the fact it’s now a big possibility that a club that only a few years ago we were visiting most preseasons to stretch our legs before the bigger preseason tests could end up a league above us next season. It highlights what an absolute mess we are due to the horrendously bad decisions and management over the past 6 months. It’s embarrassing.

If you look at the barrow squad at compare it to teams in that league they’re nothing special mostly made up of younger lads who have been at league 1 and 2 teams and not made it. Quigley is a prime example scored loads at cefton druids signed by Blackpool and didn’t really make it, got loaned out in non league and still didn’t really do it. Barrow signed him made him feel wanted with a 3 year deal for someone with his record sounds like madness but yet with a little bit of trust and confidence he’s on fire. Charlie Wyke didn’t have a very good record when we signed him but the gamble payed off. Barrow have taken a lot of risks on players that have payed off where as we made signings like Webster and NKP who looked good non risk solid signings on big money but have ended up being disasters. Maybe we need to take more risks on young hungry players like Hayden who are dying for a chance.

If Barrow get promoted then Radio Cumbria will be obliged to spend as much time covering Barrow in the pre and post match coverage as they do on Carlisle. Yesterday it was if they'd already started. Just another symptom of the sad decline in the club's fortunes.

If we go down and Barrow go up, we’ll no doubt suffer the double whammy of a relegation from FM to AM.

Did anyone else pick up on the fact that Evatt didn't sign his new contract at Barrow until a day or 2 after Pressley signed his contract in the summer. I wonder if he was waiting for the call.

Agreed Chrunch.

Personally I'm not bothered about any club other than Carlisle. Ok, got a soft spot for a couple but certainly not a supporter of them.

I am interested though in other clubs, particularly those of similar size or smaller who appear to be driving forward, despite the obvious disadvantages they have.

With a club like Accrington Stanley it's obvious who the driving force is. Good luck to them, because to a large degree that's what it is, luck. To get an owner who is a fan, of the location and of the team, and has the passion and the wealth to drive forward is every football fans dream. If they are in it for the long haul even better. It's not something a club can plan for thought, just right person, right location.

Having the sugar daddy model though is not something that can be engineered. It's the clubs doing it without a Holt or a Pilley or whoever that are more interesting.

To be honest I haven't read up on Barrow of late but I don't think they have a sugar daddy anymore? I know they don't have the gates to sustain a huge push for the league. Whilst reasonably well supported for their level, they certainly aren't a Wrexham or a Notts County.

So what are they doing to attract investment to fund this push? Is it sustainable? If it is, why aren't we doing it?

That certainly applies to parts of the town.

But in the main, it's quite tidy now and what it has going for it are a large number of highly skilled people earning way above the average wage living in it and its catchment area.

And I can see when and yes I said when they get promoted at the end of the season that a hell of a lot of those people will buy season tickets just to part of something good that's happening even if they don't plan to go to every game and given the novelty both for home fans and of course the visiting Northern clubs where I can see a situation similar to that at Accy where away fan numbers are bolstered by a chance to step back into the past and stand in a ground with an open-end [ something we.ve never even tried to exploit] and next season I wouldn't mind betting they.ll have a few sell-outs and unless something drastic happens at BP for the better I .ll bet they.ll, sell more adult season tickets than we will.

And unlike a lot of clubs that come up from the conference, they as both a club and a squad are pretty stable they've done a lot of work on tidying up the ground and have a plan to match the million-pound grant that they'd be entitled to call on. And i.m pretty sure that all the present squad are already contracted for next season so unlike most clubs who come up from the conference there won't be a massive turnover and they.ll just add a bit of quality and i wouldn't mind betting that training in Rochdale every day will give them access to players who wouldn't fancy driving to Barrow every morning.

Ian Evett now obviously sees this as a project that could get him a Championship job and i understand when he gets them promoted he's entitled to a new contract with a massive wage rise and more importantly a golden handcuffs agreement where clubs have to pay a substantial amount just for permission to speak to him and with a specified compensation fee already in place for when he finally decides that it is time to move on. And I think he's already proved he's a man of his word by telling Chesterfield not to bother coming calling because he's not in slightest interested in what they might have to offer.

It just goes to show how in a couple of years you can turn round a club from the shambles that the previous owner's son left behind and I .ll bet that there are a number of conference clubs who are secretly admiring what Barrow is doing simply because it proves you don't have to be an ex league [ yes I know 50 years ago ] club with stacks of money and thousands of fans to win that division and get back into the league.

It would make it free to listen to online if that happened! Other radio stations like BBC 3CR split the FM frequencies so Stevenage Luton and MK Dons each have their own local frequency. Playing in the National League doesn't bear thinking about.

Yeah free because we’re not in the football league, just like fa cup games are free to listen to.

We’d probably be on telly more with BT covering the national league. But as you say, it’s a horrific thought as you know under these owners we wouldn’t bounce back.

No, as per Radio Lancashire do I would imagine they would be on the Barrow area FM frequency and we would be on the Carlisle area FM frequencies the argument would be over where a lot of exiles now listen to it on Freeview. Workington and Kendal would then fight for the AM coverage and don't forget they now have the DAB option that RL also utilise to.

Nail on the head.

Even little things like a disabled shelter for away fans. It took national media humiliation for them to react to that. Ticket offers seem to be the same, just dream them up one morning when they get criticised for not doing enough to attract fans.

It’s the same on the pitch, no forward thinking, no planning, no being proactive, just plodding along and reacting or trying to when shit hits the fan.

The problem I see with Barrow coming up is currently we can tap into the west Cumbrian market as we are the only league team in the area.

If Barrow go up, there’ll market themselves better than we ever do and those without an affiliation to Carlisle United will go and watch Barrow.

Could be a good thing Barrow coming up and close Ish to us as it’ll highlight just how shit we do things.

At least we’re not Stockport

It's a bloody long way from West Cumbria to Barrow (over 50 miles from Wukkie) and shit road (not much better by train - 1 hour 23 mins) but we might lose a few, that said I expect it will only be those we have lost already. Carlisle have never, ever, ever recognised (even when run better than now) that a lot of the fans travel the kind of distances for home games which are typical away distances for some clubs/fans. A lot more could be done in West Cumbria, Keswick, Kendal.....but clearly not going to happen under current regime.
We will lose an opportunity to market ourselves as "Cumbria's team" but of course no-one has ever had the gumption to even try this....

What was the feeling like amang the crowd in the last proper Cumbrian derby we had ...i'm sure a few older members on this forum could let us know. Was it in the 1980-1981 season against Workington in the cup.?

I lived in Barrow, I like the Furness area or the ‘West lakes Peninsular as no one actually calls it!
Don’t panic we will not loose West Cumbrian fans. It’s miles away; even getting to Millom is a trek.
You have to go right round the Duddon estuary and beautiful as it is, it’s a hassle.
Ian Evitt is an Ian Atkins style man/coach. He knows what he’s doing but through that whole club everyone is pulling in the right direction.

He didn't actually go back on his word that's just Haythornthwaite's version of it.

He was made an offer and asked if that offer was acceptable to him he said yes. DH took that as he was signing he went back to Barrow who made him an improved offer [ better than the Fylde one ] he then informed DH of the situation at which point rather than improving his offer he blew his top and went on a rant in the NYD programme.

There are rumours coming out of Mill Farm that DH has already had one major bust-up with Jim Bentley over the selection of a certain player.

My interest in Barrow is a selfish one to be honest, a local derby.

At least for the first season there would be a bit of spice to it and a special train for the occasion would be appealing to many.

Another 7-0 yesterday and they missed a penalty.

Do Barrow have a rich chairman investing money as they have never had good support?

Only averaging 1,768 and are top of the league.

Highest this season only 3,267.

On the radio they were saying that there were old fans starting to go again who promised not to go back till they got back into the league.

Workington could do best out of this as they will have two clubs to either sell to or get players from.

Another plus point for us is that we can scout two opposition teams at once in our league that will play in our county on our doorstep as not forgetting not all local scouts in the county will be Carlisle based.

The majority shareholder is the owner of a local accountancy firm who have been major sponsors for over 10 years certainly not rich by any means [ not even in relation to the likes of Jenkins ] the rest of the owners are pretty much the same and the trust have a shareholding too which they are committed not to dilute by every time the other owners inject cash and turn it into equity they fundraise and do the same and i would imagine on the back of promotion they will put something more sustainable into place.

And those figures just go to show how hard it is to improve your average when the first half dozen games weren't so good but they had some great figures over the holidays but i.d imagine they'd be a little disappointed at yesterdays especially given that FCUM supposedly took just short of 300 but it was in the cup I suppose.

I reckon if they did ok in their first season they should be able to average the best part of 3.5 to 4k given the teams they'd likely play which is way more than some of the clubs who.ve come into the league in recent years and will look good against the likes of Morecambe and Macc and i know theyve already spoken to some of the guys at Accy about the transition into league football

Them FC United fans are a weird bunch.

As for Barrow the combination of an exceptional manager and what seem to be (from what I've heard on RC) some very able owners is working very well. That Yank who owned them previously (despite his fortunes) seemed to have ran the club into the ground and alienated a lot of the fan base.

Good luck to them. It's good to see a club run properly!

Wouldn't go as far as excited Nobby :)

It is a no-brainer though isn't it if Barrow went up instead of say Yeovil or Barnet, any north-west club like Fylde going up gives us northern based blues an extra local away game, the southern blues are spoiled enough as it is fixture wise :)
