I'm pretty sure the Government haven't spelled out the full details of what what will happen during the mitigate phase as we're only just into delay.

I could very well see communities being isolated when clusters are identified but don't think we've seen any clusters yet?

Assuming the infection rate is 80% and 1% die it will be at least 500,000 dead (this is a conservative estimate.

In reality the death rate is 1% of people with no precondition health issues. The fatality rate of closed case is between 6-7%. However most people with mild conditions don't even know they have it.

The real death rate is about 3% and in a few weeks the NHS won't have the capacity to treat those in a serious/critical condition. (11% of active cases in Italy).

we will be lucky to get a vaccine in a year (more likely to be 18 months).

Confirmed cases is estimated to double every week (again a conservative estimate).

Keep an eye on this:

Uk update just after 2pm and Italy update just after 5pm.

So much for new cases only doubling weekly.

Are well hell as like

Or can you show me an area of this country where we did nothing for two weeks allowing it to be passed unhindered as happened in Northern Italy ?

There isn't really even so much as a real cluster in this country. There is yet to be anyone proven to be a fourth-generation infection and to the best of my knowledge, we are yet to see anyone being isolated against their will.

Yeah, I was told this today (from a source slightly more reliable than a pub landlord with a penchant for fetish clubs). We are mapping exactly like Italy three weeks ago.

We will be in pretty much the same situation as they are now around the end of the month.

No idea how you work that out as it's been made very clear that this country's contingency plans do not include isolating communities as the thinking is the Italians 2 weeks in denial then isolating the communities might have helped to stop it spreading around their country as much as it might have done but they have effectively condemned a large number of people to contracting it in the locked-down areas completely skewing the figures and self-creating the hot spot they have.

Good question NS.

Is it better to have a 100k people in a locked-down area or allow it to spread to 66 million people across the UK and rely on them to report the problem when they think they might be infected.

At least the Italians tried (and are still trying) to stop it spreading.

Well, I have to disagree and the facts say that i.m right on yesterdays figures we had less than 50 people actually in hospital receiving treatment and only 16 of them were in what you would describe as intensive care the rest in isolated but normal type wards We have discharged 15 as recovered and the rest are following a treatment regime at home.

Hardly what you'd call an epidemic and dwarfed by the number of people who are currently receiving hospital treatment for normal flu.

Yes some people will die just like they do with normal flue but while they're elderly with existing conditions I don't see it as anything to get excited about when Triathalon runners and bodybuilders in their 30.s start dropping like flies then we might have something to worry about

At the back of my mind I used to scoff at the suggestion that scientists were scared at the notion that bringing back something from outer space could unleash a deadly virus that could wipe out the entire planet.

Not saying that this is anything like that but what has amazed me is the reality of how quickly this could happen and that there is nothing we can do about it.

Plus it still isn't much comfort from comparing x amount of people dieing from this or that in the same time scale especially as very few had heard of Coronavirus until this year.

I went to bed concerned about Coronavirus and woke up to a particularly nasty letter from the hospital telling me that during recent tests for something else they have found something else seriously wrong for me to have to worry about - I am at the conclusion that everything is in a race to kill us all whilst we just sit back and wait for the winner.

There was apparently a report or document written suggesting Swine flu would kill 75k people in the uk, I think they were a bit out with their thinking. That said, this is a different thing altogether so who knows? I have to say, I get what Alan says about the media.....Now then, do I go to the match tomorrow? Should I go on my holiday on Monday? Hopefully not as bad as Spanish Flu.

"two per cent
Top of the list is the 1918 Spanish Flu, an influenza pandemic with a fatality rate of two per cent or more which killed at least 50 million people globally – many more than the total deaths in the First World War."

Just been an American guy on Ch 4 news who's been working on viruses for 20 years he said we haven't seen anything like this since the Spanish Flu of 1918....it worries him the infectioness of it, this CV. The Government have invested £20m in working on an anti-viral but it won't be ready till the autumn.
I can probably understand the widespread rate of infection in China and Iran possibly..countries who keep stuff under raps..but Italy is a queer one and they still haven't found the first carrier.
Still 3 flights a week coming into the UK a week from China...which is worrying at best.

Just been reading another doom mongering piece then on express.co.uk by Paul Baldwin. He basically says the chances that a bat that ate a virus ridden snake, that was then made into bat soup in a Wuhan Fish market, that then mutated across the species just as it was being served to that little Chinese guy for his dinner.....er is very unlikely x a million.....when coincidentally The Wuhan Institute of virology is a 5 minute walk from the fish market.
This when other viruses like SARS Mers Bird Flu etc also originated in ...er China.

No sense in increasing the number of possible carriers tho I'd have thought.

The next phase is Delay... so if the number of cases can be delayed till warmer weather arrives (apparently) we stand a chance of it dieing out itself

I am talking about the daily updates - not the accumulated totals - China has shut down cities and are a few weeks ahead of Italy but could risk a 2nd wave. More countries have also been infected from Italy rather than China.

The Uk is delaying a Chinese style shut down for 2 reasons - 1) The economic and social factors & 2) Computer models have shown shutting will cause a larger 2nd wave going into the next winter.
