I always think "Gastro pub" is a terrible expression. When someone says gastro, my first thought is ...enteritis.

This is a great building _ Tecos were waiting for it to rot to turn into a tesco express.

The only way it would work is to price out the dodgy crowd that used to go there. a few years ago a couple took it over and said they would make it an attractive place to go. Me and a mate gave it a go and I have never downed a pint quicker in my life to get out!

It was open as a 'gastro' pub a few years ago. A couple of blokes were running it, it was doing well, the building was getting used and then they got in lumber for swapping some of the knackered listed windows for upvc ones. The fine buggered them I think. The fact because of that it's now a stinking, rotting shell seems to escape the council.

Was it the owners or the clientele? :-D

To be fair they've flattened most of raffles in the last 15 years, it might be a goer now

It seems sad , in a way that there is a lack of something in between some kind of family type pub, the gastro pub and a more traditional drinking spot, that doesn’t get run down and taken over by radgies.
Nothing wrong with certain pubs being more of a family type place and the odd Gastro pub is fine, but seems a bit sad that there are a lack of traditional pubs in the city that aren’t uninviting because they are taken over by handful of dicks hanging round the bar.
The Wigton Road, Morton area is a densely populated part of town and this could do well.

A re-vamped Currock pub would probably do well, currently it does not look too inviting - they found a dead body in there in the last couple of years I believe and some sort of malarkey with a pool stick.

Not sure how The Black Lion is doing since re-opening, anyone been in?

The Crown in Stanwix has had a good makeover, it was pretty rough before, considering it’s in Stanwix.
Got plenty of TVs for the sport , but seems to get a mixed crowd in now.

I'd love somewhere cosy to go on a Tuesday night and nurse a pint. It's the one thing I miss about the area. Nothing else in walking distance, although I'm occasionally tempted to join the social club down at St Nicholas simply to have somewhere to go.

Me and a pal tried the bowling alley but it wasn't great to have a pint in.

You are right though, the area is crying out for somewhere to have a quiet beer.

Seems to just open when it feels like it as when I go by it is open randomly, we all want a pub in Currock and maybe a little bit of bar food, doesn't have to be fancy.

Just currently doesn't come across as inviting.

A wasted opportunity for someone and like I mentioned about The Joiners, we liked to pop in and have the double egg and chips with two rounds of bread for two fifty washed down with a few ales which are rather good by the way, a cheap way for you and your mates to have a meet up and a light snack early doors.

Surely The Currock has more potential than it currently portrays as like Gordons and McColls I would actually use the local business as would many others on here I guess.

Anecdotally, I picked up that the Currock was the local BNP/NF watering hole. That was some years ago but the thought has lingered. I suspect the only thing that would get me over the door now is if it shut for 6 months and then re-opened after a lick of paint and new owners. And a regular reggae disco just to put those rumours to bed.

Last time I went in there was around 2008 and I asked for a Stella but the tap was there just no stock - basically there was about two or three taps on or cans and bottles that you can get a Booze Busters or Tesco at half the price so settled for a Strongbow.

The thing that got me though as I went in with my missus and the room went quiet, Slaughtered Lamb sort of place that probably thought that strangers were the plod, my missus said 'you actually used to drink in here' and I told her no that we used to go to the more welcoming The Cumberland Wrestlers.

I would be sad if it closed as it would be nice to be re-vamped as it always looks dark and not very welcoming and as said many of us on here would use it as I am all for supporting local businesses but they are all really decent and The Currock isn't.

Frustrating as I would actually use it frequently, like many of us would if they would only just pull their finger out as we all want a decent pub in Currock, the area is crying out for it, I hope hat they do not think that there is no demand for a pub in Currock because there is one already and nobody uses it, we just don't want it as it currently is and that is a big difference.

As I said, at the time it didn't appear to have a very good one.

To be fair Barry, some places look dodgy and are decent but this place currently looks dodgy and hasn't got the best recent history.

It could currently have the best pint in the world and it wouldn't make a jot to the upturn of profits.

I could be wrong but think Ronnie Wood owns it, would have thought that if anyone he has the backing to make it work - we all want the Currock to remain a pub!

Think Ron Wood owns the building rather than a pub company. He then leases it out rather than running it himself same with a few other places around town.

Meant to post that it was shut the other day, someone on here did say that it was closing in May.

As said above by EJ, I would love The Currock to be spruced up and re-opened, not asking for it to have hundreds of thousands of pounds spent on it just a lick of paint and a bit of light in there would get people in as it currently just looks so uninviting.

Maybe look at bar snacks, I used to love it when The Kings Head did a plate of chips with a dollop of chilli con carne on top for two pounds seventy, washed down with a couple of Yates's finest.

Not hard to do a spag bol or Chilli with chips, big pot and its gone when its gone or just raid Gordons and do a bit of Cumberland on a bap or a bacon chop, chips and beans - simple food that is also quality and you can charge a reasonable price to get folk in there for the beer.

If it’s that easy take it on. Been in pub management 16 years now and get asked all the time why I don’t take my own place on, and also being offered 3or4 pubs on good terms. Somewhere like th currock is fucked, no parking, reputation, uninviting, etc. All well and good people saying they would go if it was better which is why pub companies do them up but when The punters don’t return it’s a vicious circle

Not that it would be easy, just meant as in when people do up a pub they throw so much money at it normally and spend so much cash and employ so many staff that the meals are over a tenner a head and I don't think that would suit The Currock.

I couldn't do much worse running it in the last few years, I would have started by opening the curtains for the first time in a decade.

Never went to it in any of its former owners so I cannot judge on how much it has turned around as I am not from that side of town but can agree that when I have visited it in the last couple of years the food has been bang on and quite a nice pub with enough decent screens to watch the football.

One of the few pubs in town I haven’t visited being from south of carlisle not sure I’d even know how to get there, I believe it’s good but unlike the currock it’s a bit further out of town so better catchement area and with sport on for people who wanna just watch the match and go home it’s ideal. Unfortunately the currock a pub I’ve being in but from recollection haven’t had a pint in ever has none of these.

Robbery these days, around three quid a pint I don't mind - I just fancy a few pints for a tenner but when it is some fancy shite that tastes like San Miguel for a fiver a pop then they can get stuffed, I would understand if it was the best thing that I had ever tasted but they never are so I gave up
