Went to the Coach & Horses tonight for the first time in a few years for some dinner.

Very good, typical pub food menu but big portions and extremely nice.

Went in there for my birthday a few years back and it was shit.

Changed hands since or changed the menu so might give it another go.

Shite, I must be showing my age as I have no idea where this place is let alone ever been in there.

I honestly cannot remember the last time that I was in a nightclub let alone where it was.

They are great for the young folk to try and get fixed up but give me a traditional blokes pub every time for a bit of a crack with pals and locals and a few ales - even managed a game of pool yesterday, this is the atmosphere that actually makes me want to get out and go to the pub as it lifts your mood.

Didn't really want to go out yesterday but I was talked into it (by my pal and not the missus trying to get shot of me before anyone says) but glad that I did now as it made a bad day a great one.

I only go maybe once a week or every fortnight but as times change I fear that pubs are on the decline to the point where we will be left with chain pubs which is a great shame in my eyes as they do not offer the same experience.

Recently in The Joiners, my pal went out for a smoke and there was this elderly bloke checking out the photo's and memorabilia and then approached me and asked if the biscuit factory was still open, couldn't fathom out his accent as it was softly spoken.

Told him to watch the programme recently aired, he said he was only there in pub the first place because him and his wife had watched a Michael Portillo train documentary and it featured the factory and it fascinated them.

I invited him to join us and spent a decent couple of hours drinking ales whilst his wife was getting shopping in Sainsburys - turns out that he is Australian and he met his wife in London fifty odd years ago and she moved over there, the deal was that if they did London then he wanted to see his roots (I wont say where but he has a local surname).

A proper good crack we had, nice to fire questions at people in the know about pro-s and cons of things abroad.

Thing was that when he left we forgot to tell him that me and my mate are sick of the upkeep of Carlisle Castle and Dixons Chimney so for a knockdown price of 5k they could have had the pair - cash only lol.

Really nice couple, glad that the weather was good for them too.

Stoneyholme has been taken over by Ron Wood, would be good to see it doing well again, we went in there before matches for a good while before the floods. The downside was Moose getting his white SOS shoes dirty in the wintertime, never again he said.

No amount of refurb of the St Nich will improve the area...... from The Private shop to the Roadhouse and the abandoned doctors surgery next door it remains an eyesore for the southern entry route to the city and the terrace of shops opposite needs money spent on it. The Cranemakers stays afloat tho it seems

There’s far worse rows of shops in this town than the one you describe!

Apart from the old Docs and maybe one of the old guest houses, most are sound enough on that stretch...

Alan, a little behind the times... Mark been in the currock for a couple of weeks. As for the St nick, hope they make a go of it, but if they treat customers the way they did in the Cumberland, i fear they will fail. I grew up with Danny, but their customer service leaves much to desire!

The landlord Pez is a spurs fan . Think he started it putting up a spurs shirt.
We use to meet in The dogs for matches, once over we probably needed 2 cars .
Over the years the lads would donate their shirts and it's just built up from there.
Now I live in Carlisle and the lads have given up coming

Went to The Border Reiver recently with the missus, on the specials board there is a Special Mixed Grill, proper chargrilled fare as well, Lamb Chop, pork Chop, Gammon, Rump Steak, homemade chips, massive homemade battered onion rings, two bits of black pudding and your half a tomato.

Well worth fifteen quid though I quickly realised that my eyes were bigger than my belly and resorted to the old trick of 'this is delicious you need to try a bit of everything' to the missus to make the plate a bit clearer.

Different menu up there since last time we went, maybe a year back - but the food is still excellent if anyone fancied popping in for a bit of scran.

Totally agree.

Had a quick pint in The Museum on the way back, I don't know what it is with that place as it isn't dodgy or anything to my knowledge but it is just a crap pub with no character or atmosphere - even though there were a few in there.

The heating was ramped up to the max, I nodded off twice - then again I had had eaten a massive mixed grill :)

The Magpie’s a lovely boozer, last pub in Carlisle with a bowling green. George and Laura have worked hard getting it back up and running and doing a great job. Pint of Sovereign one of the best in town aswell.
