Not exactly Carlisle but the Royal Oak in Scotby is undergoing refurbishment.

Has been closed for a couple of years but due to reopen at tend of August (looks more like mid September by the current appearance).

It's in a great location for attracting folk off the main roads or out of town.

Went in The Boardroom in the town centre a few weeks ago, first time I'd been in for ages.
Good old fashioned traditional pub, decent pint and plenty of folk in as well.

If we're going to a gig at the old fire station or the sands we have a few in the boardroom, always a good pint and as you say get a few in.

Went for some scran in The Howard the other evening, was very impressed. Place is a lot more open and airy since the refurb, and they do a 'create your own pie meal' which was music to my ears! You choose your type of pie, mash, side and gravy from a selection - I had game pie with mature cheddar mash, mushy peas and red wine gravy and it was superb, only £8.95 as well which is bargainesque. Served in those white enamel dishes with blue rims which I remember well from my childhood.

Can’t comment on the food as the menu doesn’t really appeal.
However to me they have taken a rough diamond and destroyed it to create another soulless theme type pub.
Overpriced drinks in a pub that has little atmosphere.

Shocked last night when the Reiver announced it was closing on Monday or Tuesday, the brewery dropped a clanger in letting Michelle and Tony go when the pub was bouncing,

The Museum thats was packed in the 80s and 90s looks like its on its last legs and god knows how the Scott is still open (probably the darts).

I've never been a shopper but I do worry about the role and function of town centres in the future with loads of shops closing down. I think the Business Rates need to be dropped completely to keep town centres relevant. Every centre could be like Blackpool soon without the attractions.

The Scot is normally heaving apparently, do you ever venture outside your house and leave your abacus to find out UB?

They could close every shop in the centre of Carlisle, torch them, then half bulldoze them all, and it would still be nicer than Blackpool...

The Scott is only busy Bank Holiday family days and for the darts. Other than that about 6/7 in there is usual.

Noticed someone call Boris, Bonzo on the brexit thread & it got me thinking. Can anyone remember Bonzo, the landlord of the Cumberland Wrestlers, corner of Rome and Currock streets. The reason i ask is i can't think for the life of me what his dog was called. It was a big St Bernard. Thanks
