Folk are criticising Sheridan for his comment about wanting to be closer to home and asking why he took the job in the first place. Is it not plausible that he initially didn’t think location would be a problem but over time it perhaps has? Afterall, how does someone know they’re going to become homesick/sick of travelling until they try it?

Because he managed Plymouth and Newport and left both of those citing that he wanted to move closer to home.

If you know that you have a problem with travelling/being away from family/being away from your drinking mates then you don't keep taking jobs that would make that necessary.

Fair point Deckchair, although (presuming Sheridan lives in the Sheffield area) frequently travelling to Plymouth would take its toll far more than travelling to Carlisle. Perhaps circumstances within the family changed and he thought he could cope with the travelling, which turned out not to be the case. Criticising people when you don’t know the circumstances is poor in my opinion.

This sudden assumption he’s a raging alcoholic, based on a Twitter post, is poor too.

Can’t recall many reports of him constantly on the lash up here?!

Bloke maybe likes a few with his mates, so what? Plenty folk do! Doesn’t mean he’s on it all the time though...

Maybe we should concentrate on the football rather than a psychoanalysis of a former club employee who chose to leave and who very few people on here, if any, have spent enough time with to make such judgements on the inner-workings of his mind.

I can't say I feel any anger towards Sheridan for leaving.
He was reportedly given 2 games before he was sacked before the MK game so why should he show loyalty - it cuts both ways.
It's just a job for most managers and players today that's why it's so uplifting to see players like Danny playing where the club clearly is dear to his heart.
He was out of work and we needed a manager. I can't imagine we were his ideal club just as he wasn't our ideal candidate.
He needed a job and ours was available. It looked like a panicked, botched appointment of a man with a history of doing what he's just done.
If Carlisle wanted a longer term appointment don't hire Sheridan.
He gets offered a job nearer home, more money, longer contract.
If you look at the results and the position we're in you'd have to pinch yourself. We could be 3rd by 10 to 5 on Saturday. I thought we'd be closer to 3rd bottom to be honest pre-season.
When was the last time in recent history the club has cut so viciously back its cloth and he's guided us through well, I think.
But, where I do feel anger towards him is the way he has spoken to officials in the past.
Unforgivable some of the stuff he's come out with. Having officiated in the past at a very, very low level it's stomach churning to hear someone screaming vile, personal abuse at you.
I think that is unforgivable.

When you keep on going about Sheridan relying in Curles signings you make it sound like everyone he brought in was a diamond.

I did and I liked Sheridan but not as much.

My point was that the players Sheridan inherited were hardly shabby.

Good post NCF.
Mind you one thing I did notice with him while he was here' was he rarely seem to have a pop at the 4th official, (something I know he was noted for doing at other clubs), which is one of my pet hates.

Good point this. Sheridan certainly wasn't in the top few names that the board wanted for this job. If the rumours/people ITK were correct then we'd all but appointed 2/3 other names before coming up with Sheridan as the answer to our managerial question.

Being Chesterfield's number one choice, who they're willing to pay us to get is quite a different proposition; if it is correct that he was only 2 games from getting the sack not so long ago he's surely going to be in a much more secure position now and that will likely be a big factor in his decision to move on.

I think most people are disappointed that the manager who led us to 5 wins on the spin has left and possibly lost us some momentum but not John Sheridan himself.

I'm no expert and I don't know if he was depressed when at Carlisle but he certainly looks a lot happier than he ever did when he was here on some of these photos. Living and working in the back of beyond is not everybody's cup of tea and you can't put a price on happiness.
