Just been having a good look around Twitter at retained lists and the like, when I noticed this.

His agent has tweeted this morning that he’s joining a L2 Club today, quoting a well known NE Football Journalist.

The player now follows CUFC on his Twitter.

Said journo has since tweeted this:

It's sickening to hear Beech harping on that Mellish "runs further than anyone else" every week.

If you know your position you don't have to run as far, you've got to make the ball do the work.

Mellish runs further than anyone else because he's chasing the ball like a Cocker spaniel and chasing the opposition like a schoolboy.

His effort is not in question, it's his technical ability and intelligence as a midfielder which are both lacking. Yes he made a great run yesterday before Toure bounced the ball off his head into the goal, but in general his performances this season have been garbage of the highest order.

I man told me in Costa today that Mellish has a big sell on clause and a one off fee when he takes the captain’s armband for England. He said he knew Piglet but I may have misheard that bit

I can’t see any similarities at all he was a natural goal scorer I thought he was best at West Ham he was good for us but getting on a bit linked up well with young Peter Beardsley

But everybody HAS to give the lad a chance, it hasn't worked for him in his first few games as a midfielder, until yesterday...............so what? Beech has obviously seen him a lot more in training than any of us have, so he obviously sees something in the lad, and maybe, just maybe that performance yesterday is what he sees in him.
Reminds me a lot of the Paul Conway situation all those years ago, people could not wait to get on his back, he was even booed before he came on as a sub against Scunny, only to score two goals after he came on, from that day onwards he never looked back.
Give the lad a bloody chance!!!!!

Like any player that pulls on a Utd shirt I want them to do well. The contract extension though is clearly giving the finger to those who question team selection. Maybe if everyone had been against the signing of Devitt he would be back at Brunton Park by now

Well if you thnk the standard of player that Mellish is getting rewarded with good news then I guess you have no ambitions for the club to play at a higher level than we are now.

Look I'm pleased for Mellish and I thought it was his best game in a Carlisle shirt at the weekend.

He's got age on his side to develop and improve in that midfield role and I suppose the year extension gives him that extra security and confidence.

I really hope he makes that box to box position his own, he has to prove a lot of supporters (myself included) wrong!

You could give him a two hundred year contract, he'll still never be a midfielder.

We're pretty much conceding any real interest in going for promotion by saying Mellish is going to be a fixture in midfield for the next two seasons.

I'll be hoping for one of two things, either Beech departs or Mellish has a sustained injury.

I don't see a problem.

I don't really care why he's out of the team, injury, incarceration, kidnap by aliens, holiday in Bermuda, it's all the same to me.

Of course, what we should really wish for is a manager who isn't a simpleton then there's no problem.

Did I say he was??
My point was that after that game people started to realise that he wasn't actually that bad either, he just needed a bit of confidence and to start believing in himself. But typically some fans simply want to have a go at anybody that they think will never make it, like the insane ramblings of Piglet, he's already announced to the world that Mellish will NEVER make it in midfield and that our manager is a Simpleton, without giving either of them a real chance.
Wonder who the real simpleton is?? eh Piglet.

I rated Conway quite highly, even before those idiots in the Paddock booed him that time.

He wasn't the fastest player in the world and didn't run a million miles in a game like a headless chicken kicking everything above a blade of grass, but he had decent technique, could pick a pass, had an eye for goal and also had the intelligence required to be a success in midfield. I'd probably have him in my team of the 90's.

The analogy with Mellish is a million miles off. It's like comparing a chihuahua with a racehorse (in terms of midfielders).

I did actually think Mellish had decent potential as a central defender, that quality of bringing the ball out of defence had a bit of Alan Hansen about it. Playing him out of position is going to screw his career to be honest. Beech will keep on hammering that square peg into the round hole for two years (or however long) until he's too old to develop properly as a defender. He'll end in 2022 back in non-league in the North East struggling to patch his career back together.

Mellish is no Conway but he also isn’t a dud Piglet.I have seen a lot worse at BP over the years and so have you.

As for Beech, have a look at the hand dealt to him and who he reports to.The job spec comprises ‘ do not waste money , don’t ask for any money, and don’t get relegated’

The hand dealt to Beech could've included Devitt in midfield instead of Mellish.

You can't blame Holdsworth, Day, or any fictitious remit you might make up, for this decision.

From that, I infer that the reason you think Mellish is shit is because you wanted the club to sign Devitt instead of playing Mellish in midfield..

Remind me again how many games Devitt has played this season,

Aye I've no doubt Beech is doing exactly what was asked of him by Holdsworth and Co and is maybe a nice fella but that doesn't make him a good manager.

The lad after being converted into a midfielder is what say 10 games into his new role?
Covers every blade of grass gets into goalscoring positions and is already finding the net regularly
Beech has signed a raft of young players to develop but as usual the knobheads demand instant results and crucify some players before they have a fair chance

Flatcap, no that's not the reason.

And what's the number of games Devitt has played this season got to do with the price of chips? Are you suggesting Devitt does not have the ability to get into our current team?

Can we also put this "covers every blade of grass, runs further than Forest Gump etc" nonsense to bed please? If you don't understand the position and you're chasing the ball all the time then it's obvious you're going to run needlessly further than anyone else. It's the difference between being a bit of an athlete and being a footballer. Just because you can run around a lot doesn't mean you're cut out to be a midfielder.

Have you ever played in midfield or football at all. Sometimes the ball does the work, sometimes you have to make it work. He often chases lost causes and tackling high up the pitch to gain us territory. His work will often no be noticed. If devitt really wanted to be here he wouldn’t be asking for crazy money, please give up your agenda your very boring.

It’s known Blackpool will pay him up a certain amount, so anyone who signs him would only need to offer a % of what he’s on currently...

Oh, I notice all his "work" don't you worry.

You can't really compare him to a Billy, a Thirlwell or even a Prokas at our level. Those ball-winning, gap filing, defensive type qualities are an asset holding in midfield, but not really what you want specifically in an attacking midfielder.

But as far as his all round play goes, as a midfielder I'm still not convinced.

Joking aside about the B Robson comparison, I think newcarlislefan has proven himself to be a very shrewd judge in his analysis. It seems the game is changing from some of the tedious fannying on we have seen over recent times, to a more substance over style approach and I think most of us will be earing humble pie about Mellish. Well done that man.

Three league games on and it's way too early to say anybody's proving anything.

I think it's fantastic he's returned three goals in as many games, but there have been worrying periods also in those games where he's been chasing shadows and has looked out of his depth.

Can you forgive general ineptitude from a midfielder if he's bagging you a goal every game? The answer to this is probably "yes". However, if you're the rest of the division analysing our performance then you stick a man on Mellish to prevent him from having any space in the box and he's completely nullified.

There's the energy, the "tackling" and a bag load of pointless running, but replaced by a more intelligent midfielder we'd look like a better football team and less fluster and bluster.

I'd like to see a midfield three of Furman, Guy & Riley. Yes we might lose Mellish's goal, but we might gain some more watchable football and more goals from our front three.

We need goal s from everyone not just the forwards.

Who was making blocks in the 80+ minute yesterday? Mellish. Who caused chaos in their defensive line for Alessandras cross to go in? Mellish Who scored a first time finish with his weaker foot to score 5 in 3 games? Mellish. Who bullied Harry Pell one of the most effective midfielders in the league and almost got him sent off? Mellish

He’ll have good days and bad days but if you can’t appreciate when he doesn’t score you don’t deserve him when he does. Nobody agrees with you on this so leave your agenda and concertante on the fact they beat us 3-0 home and away last season, look where we are now. How many bottlers, mercenaries and overpaid nobody’s have we had in recent years? For once we’ve got an honest hard working lad from the north east whose desperate to do well for the football club. Apart from all his hard work Jon Mellish has something very few footballers have at this level,
that is to find and create space especially in the penalty area and then more importantly get on the end
of the chances created.
A box to box player like Mellish who if he continues to improve will not be with us for long.
