That time of year, where decision’s will start to be made soon etc…

Squad as it stands come Summer:

UNDER CONTRACT FOR 2023
GK - Breeze*, Simons*.

DEF - Senior, Armer, Whelan, Mellish.

MID - Guy, Dixon.

WIDE - Gibson, Patrick, Bell.

STR - Dennis, Sho-Silva, Abrahams, Fishburn*.

(*Indicates 1st Year Pro)

OUT OF CONTRACT IN SUMMER
GK - Howard, Norman.

DEF - Mellor, Feeney*, McDonald.

MID - Riley, Devine, Devitt, Charters.

WIDE - Dickenson, Toure.

STR - Alessandra, Mampala.

(*Indicates Club Option available)

LOANEES BACK TO PARENT CLUB
GK - Jensen.

DEF - Roberts, Simeu.

STR - Omotoye, Windsor.

Thoughts folks?

I’d be offering deals to Howard (Though could see him saying no?), Riley, Charters and Devitt. Also using Feeney’s option (Or better longer term deal!)

I’d look to move Abrahams on of those signed up too.

The rest of those out of contract just haven’t performed consistently enough…

(Updated Feeney & Dixon)

Simpson saying post match that one of the players has agreed to go elsewhere. My immediate thought was Feeney but he played today and we have an option so I would guess Riley. No loss at all in my view.

Feeney the only one I’d be disappointed to see leave as we can build the defence around him.

Get the contract of Feeney extended. Howard and Charters perhaps worth keeping. Maybe harsh on Mellor, but with Ellis coming through and Senior to come back, I’d probably let him go. Get shot of the rest. Dickenson has been a mystery to me, clearly a decent player but it just hasn’t worked for him here.

We need a complete rebuild in the midfield. Some mobility, pace, and strength desperately required there. Callum Guy is the only player currently at the club that I want to see in midfield next season. A faster alternative to Armer would also be nice, he doesn’t have the pace to play at wingback.
If you look at 2021 Anderton wasn't offered was he? He was mince and disappeared off doing everyone a favour.
I don't think Farman was offered either as we had Captain potential, Norman waiting to become number1.
Patrick already knew he was off to League 1, so no discussion there.
Zanala was after £5ka week, ridiculous and hugely more than he ever got.
So the only player we had any conversations with who we didn't get was Bennett, a player who lasted 6 months at a team relegated and 6 months at a team that did its best to join them.
Scott and Furman both dropped into non league. So the one we really wanted was Feeney, and he is still with us.

We were also accepted, unfortunately, by Alessandra and Toure.

Before we release almost every single out-of-contract senior player, it's worth remembering we had a 20% 'success' rate when it came to agreeing new deals with players offered terms under the carpet salesman in the last two years:

May 2021
Rejected new deal: Nick Anderton, Rhys Bennett, Paul Farman, Omari Patrick and Offrande Zanzala.
Accepted new deal: Morgan Feeney
Senior players released: Dean Furman and Cedwyn Scott.

May 2020
Rejected new deal: Jack Bridge, Gethin Jones and Byron Webster
Accepted new deal: Lewis Alessandra
Senior players released: Adam Collin, Kelvin Etuhu, Louis Gray, Jack Iredale, Mike Jones, Nathaniel Knight-Percival, Harry McKirdy, Mo Sagaf and Stefan Scougall

I do think that our former Director of Failure played a part in that .

I have not heard that before. If that is the case then him being their No. 1 may turn out to be a more profitable option than a sale.

He have to make 400 appearances to match 10% of a £40m sale! (both figures are guesswork btw)

Yes you're right, I suppose what I meant was it might be advantageous to take £450k a year for a few years than a lump sum. But that's assuming we didn't need the lump sum to pay off the debt, which we do. Poor situation all round really.

If we want to get out of the division we need better than Alessandra and McDonald.

I don't think either have been disastrous for us.

Alessandra has his moments but is not consistent enough, for me he's too similar to Dennis (who's already contracted for next season).

McDonald's been an integral part of a defence which has shipped 60 goals this season, and his lack of pace has been cruelly exposed at times. To be brutally honest, he's a lower tier four / conference level defender. He could do a good job for a Grimsby or a Halifax, but if we want to progress we need a better standard of defender.

That said, if I had to choose between McDonald and Whelan I'd pick McDonald every day of the week, so it's a shame in that respect.

I thought Concrete Rod was older, to be honest.
Yeah, I suppose you are right, probably best for all if he moves on.
I still feel there is an argument to be had that some back up players are worth keeping, but I suppose he isnt a very good example.

It might depend on whether Simmo decides to play with a back three or a back four. If he prefers a back three he'd want someone quicker than McDonald, hence Mellish was preferred when playing that system.

Are we not getting 10k every time he plays? How long does that go on for?

We don't get one! And therein lies the problem with our current position. Relying on a sale that may never happen.

What happens to our cut if he stays and becomes number 1?

My best guess is Henderson will either stay for another year or go on loan. Just have a feeling he won't want to leave permanently until he's sure he can't force his way into the team under Ten Hag. He won't go on a free as he's under contract untill 2025.

I’d keep Alessandra and McDonald as squad players, both still got something to offer. Alessandra had a really good game against Mansfield and got a goal against Stevenage when coming on. McDonald was arguably the best player this season before his injury and Simmo’s arrival.

I reckon a national League team would probably sign both , Although I think Alessandra can do a job in league 2 although would not keep him .

McDonald is only 30 would say he's likely got 3-4 years at least . Again a national League , or lower end league 2 team will take a punt.

I often wonder about the role of back up/squad players in these kinds of decisions.
With likes of Devine , Alessandra and McDonald (in the last two cases because they are reaching the end of their career). , is it better to stick with them as cover, if they do a fair job when they come in?
I doubt there will too many other league clubs looking to snap them up.

I can't imagine anything will happen financially until we know what is happening with Henderson. If he leaves on a free and you find yourself on the hook for £2.5m?! Honey we lost the lottery.

Would anyone take any of the loanees, Simeu excepted, back?
Jensen and Dinzeyi played well when given a chance, I thought. I also thought Dinzeyi would get a chance at right back because he was quick. I can't see Jensen coming back for another season on the bench, but he looked much better than Norman.
Brad Young was busy but not effective.
Omoyoye, not good enough.
Roberts didn't add anything to the team other than cover.
Difficult to say with Windsor, scored on is debut then never came back

I'd offer deals to Howard, Riley, Charters & Devitt.

The rest can go really to allow Simpson the spaces to build a much better squad.

How anyone can argue for keeping the likes of Devine, McD
onald or Mellor is beyond me. If we keep them then we can expect similar results next season. They aren't dreadful but we should be aiming higher now.

We won the Euromillions or something? What are we going to pay all these higher calibre players with? We are still haemorrhaging £500K a year, Jenkins has turned off the taps, Day has left the phone off the hook and we haven't got a pot to pee in.

Yes Simmo may be good at polishing a turd but may be best to rein in expectations.

It's more a point of - if we keep much of the se squad we will end up in a similar position.

Simpson will have a budget and I'd trust him to replace players with better options.

No one mentioned spending huge sums. It's about saving money by releasing some, to be able to sign others.

No-I’m convinced there is change in the offing.I reckon within a month.

As for watching them squirm, absolutely. After they described me as a dubious, penniless charlatan, let me enjoy their discomfort thank you.
Something must have been agreed between Simmo and the club. He made the point over and over he didn't want to stay if nothing changed. What he's been promised and if it happens is another thing, but I don't think he will have been told we can only afford the bargain bucket otherwise I don't think he would still be here.

Or perhaps Simpson always fancied the job and living here, and was always going to take it whatever. Perhaps he was simply speaking previously with an air of bravado.
