Kangshung wrote: Sick of hearing that we're punching above our weight. Before a ball was kicked this year, the consensus seemed to be that anything less than a playoff place would be a failure. By the time the early season transfer window closed, most folk I knew thought we had an excellent shot at promotion, with the caveat that we were short of cover in the fullback positions and needed to avoid injuries in those positions.

The start to the season seemed to confirm our credentials. Curle was able to vary our tactics, playing a range of formations and styles of football. The squad was full of fight, and simply refused to be beat. Despite the hiccup at Newport, we went into December looking like potential champions. And then we went to Luton...

Losing two key players that night undoubtedly played a huge part in our fall from grace. The crucial thing being that we had no cover at all for Grainger - an issue most fans had identified as a potential problem at the start of the season.

Still, at the turn of the year we had lost only one league game. The transfer window was open, and surely the club's hierarchy would make the small investment necessary to shore up the holes? Surely a couple of hundred thousand could be found to finance the promotion push?

But of course, this is Carlisle United. The only football club still doing business in the 20th century. The investment wasn't forthcoming. And in the meantime, our form has gone from that of would-be champions to that of relegation candidates. And Curle is increasingly looking like a beaten man.

Dress it up all you want, but the club has let it's fans down. January was a chance to show some intent and get the place buzzing, but Jenkins and those other oxygen thieves did quite the opposite. Whilst some may have been content with our activity at the time, most regular supporters I know were quite the opposite, and the feeling amongst the floating fans was certainly not positive - as evidenced by the disappointing attendances of late.

Those of you who feel we are still in with a chance are entitled to say so, don't get me wrong. But you are living in a dream world.

Most of you will have been going to Brunton Park as long as I have, so let me ask you a couple of simple questions: have you ever seen a comparable loss of form? And if so, did that side get promoted, or even make the playoffs?

For me, the answer is yes to the first question. The oft-cited 89-90 collapse was spectacular. Not only did we bottle promotion, but we failed to make the playoffs, despite being top of the league at the end of February.

Missing out on promotion but making the playoffs would be a huge disappointment after the first four months of the season - but missing out on the playoffs would be inexcusable. To suggest that people aren't really supporters - just because they openly speak out about this dramatic decline - is ridiculous at best.

One last question: do you see anything to suggest we are ready to turn this form around?

So because we bottled promotion 27 years ago we're living in a dream world to think we might go up this year? That's it then, I won't bother going Saturday, or Tuesday, or to Mansfield. In fact that's me until August. What's the point?

I'm not questioning whether folk are really supporters because they're openly speaking about the decline, the decline is there for all to see and I acknowledged that in my original post. I'm questioning whether folk are really supporters because they're saying the season is over and have given up when we're sat in an automatic promotion place with 11 games left. Now that's ridiculous!

Imagine the uproar if Curle turned around and said something similar? I'm not saying things are looking good, the signs aren't great but we're still in the mix, in with a shout and until otherwise I'll still have optimism. We don't get many promotion seasons in our lifetimes so why folk have given up on this season whilst we're sitting third is beyond me. They're the people I'm questioning.

Nicely twisted.

I'm not implying that we won't go up because we bottled promotion a couple of decades back, I'm simply pointing out the parallels between that season and this one. I'm also asking if anybody can recall us recovering from this kind of collapse. So far, nobody can. Judging from your lack of an actual answer to the questions I asked, I'd say you can't either.

And would you really stop going just because promotion was no longer likely? Or was that simply for dramatic effect?

You are right about Curle. Of course there would be uproar. It is his job to keep the players believing, and such a statement would be stupid coming from him.

But he is a manager, not a supporter. Talk about flawed analogies...

Folk are giving up because they've been here before. We're watching history repeat itself. Perhaps you'd prefer if we all settled for perennial fourth tier football, but many on here will not do so.

I sincerely hope you have cause to ram these words down my throat at the end of the season.

I can think of two seasons in my supporting lifetime where we've thrown a really good position away and failed to go up, the Maidstone away season and the Leeds play off season. I can also think of a season where we have recovered from an awful run to gain promotion, the conference season. Quite what the relevance of this point is with regards this season I don't know, what's gone before has no bearing on what's happening now.

Of course my point about stopping going was for dramatic effect, it was an attempt at sarcasm. However the nature of some of the posts on this thread sounds like some people would stop going even though we are still in an automatic promotion place. Unbelievable.

Really don't know where you're coming from with your final point though. Why would I prefer to settle for fourth division football when I seem to be one of the few sticking with the team and optimistic about promotion???

Nobody's is saying they'll stop going. People are simply disillusioned with the club following the 2 year saga we have been subjected to. Throw in the recent decline in our on field fortunes, and you have a recipe for a negative outlook. Perhaps that taints some of our views of our chances this season. All I'm giving you are examples of previous 'nearly' seasons, and the very real precedent for this club to fall away from promotion challenges.

Other than the conference season, we made a fantastic late break for the playoff places in 93/94. Whilst we didn't get past the semifinals, a similar run this season would likely be enough to sneak 3rd place. But such finishes to a season have been the exception to the rule in my time following the club. It may be cynical, but i can't help but feel a sense of deja vu this season.

That doesn't for one moment mean that I am 'settling' for league 2 football next year.

I am frustrated that we haven't seen the club demonstrate a bit of ambition in January, when a modest figure could have seen us strengthen in a couple of key areas. Of course, that wouldn't have guaranteed promotion, but it would have at least shown intent.

That we didn't do this says to me instead that the directors have themselves settled for league 2 football.]]>

Yeah but i'm just saying 18 fit full time players isn't an awful lot, I dont rate Brough and is quite rightly out of the squad.

We have a decent sized squad but the reason we only have 18 fit full time players is some of them are injured.]]>

Same thing can be said for the time of the game and doing it, Gillespie looking sideways for a pass from a goal kick in injury time on Saturday was just madness. It's admirable trying to play from the back but there's a time and a place for it and Curle really needs to address this.]]>

we are getting the blame for the infringement of the rules how can that be when we weren't informed until it was 8-8 what the situation was...

at 8-8 it was then Gillespie's and this so called injured player's turn to take pens..... it almost looks like a deliberate ploy to force Carlisle to withdraw their last pen taker the goalkeeper......

either Derby County or the officials are badly in the wrong here how come that blame gets shifted to a team who were unaware of the situation until it was on the final pen taker...............]]>

We've battered two teams this week and got 2 points, yes that's annoying but only because we could and should have had six.

Surely that's a good sign of what is to come this season?

That about sums the board up, We batter a couple of teams, the strikers fail to capitalise on the numerous chances created, yet the target for criticism isn't the misfiring strikers but a defender!

Jervis was a real threat and had one terrific run from right to left. The new signings look very promising and so far appear to have really strengthened the squad. Adams and Jones seem to be good readers of the game and play intelligently. Lambe has been great going forward. He took his goal very cooly today.

67% possession first half.....looking good defensively because midfield has been strengthened was a problem before because of big holes in midfield leaving our backs vulnerable]]>
