There’s non league teams a lot further south than Wolves playing in the Northern structure. Think Oxford City were at one point. Dunno if the still are.


Oxford City and Gloucester City are right on the National League ‘Border’. Both played in the Southern last Season, but Gloucester City have been moved to the Northern this coming Season as the four relegated teams were all from further South (Gateshead getting moved down saved Oxford City from the same fate in the end, and also saw Aldershot reprieved).

The eight Southern U21 teams feature 5 London Clubs, Brighton, Southampton and Norwich, so likes of Villa, Wolves and Leicester were always going to be in the Northern half...

Sunderland and Portsmouth to a certain extent let us down badly. I hope they suffer a few more years in the bottom tiers as a result. Let's see how much they like the trophy then.
Most of their fans are still hanging onto the dreams of the PL glory days. They need a kick up the arse and a chance to see what it is like for those at the bottom end. I think that's why a lot of us revel in these big teams fall from grace as they don't give a damn about the needy the rest of the time.
The sooner Sunderland get knocked out the better.

The Trophy cost Sunderland promotion last year. Extra games and an obsession with a day out at Wembley (Which they got a few weeks later in the Play-Offs!)...

Man Utd’s U21’s aren’t that big a draw then?



A quick google shows last time Rotherham were in the Trophy in 17/18, they had crowds of 2562 v Man City U21 and 2043 v Chesterfield...

If you take the away support off its only an extra 3-400 fans, plus would be interested to have seen how many actual adults there since they made 17 and below £2 a ticket and set game early so that age group could attend.

plus if you go back afew years they got 4,000 fans in early stages when playing in sheffield.

i'd said yes man utd youth added b*gger all........just Man city youth are even less attractive and the league sides games people boycott anyway.

Rotherham have also grown their fanbase after a successful few years in tiers 2 and 3.
Combine all these things (man United effect, kids prices, new fans, new ground etc.) And you are bound to get a few more who don't see the bigger picture. Hopefully they will in time.
And surely these teams should have to field all English players or they totally go against their whole objective of improving the national squad. Makes my blood boil.

I will be boycotting this embarrassing competition once again... even if we make the final. Frankly the sooner we get knocked out the better in my book.

This is nothing but a very obvious... thinly disguised attempt to normalise B teams playing lower tier teams..... the end game is obviously to shoehorn these teams into the league structure. That would be the death of lower leagues in England. Bear that in mind if you attend any games in this sham of a competition.

Excactly CCU, will never go to one of these games, whoever its against ( or in the final ) me & my mate said if we got to the final we would go down for the weekend on the supporters coach but do something else on the day of the final.

Yet we aren’t playing this week, instead waiting a further three weeks to play Wolves.

Play the likes of Louis Gray, Keighran Kerr, Charters, Branthwaite, Hayden etc.

If premier league clubs can use it to blood their youngsters then why shouldn’t we?

F££k the fine! Just don’t pay it, what they gonna do, Kick us out of this farce of a competition? please do!

With our squad quite light in numbers and Pressley mentioning players being fatigued all the time, no way should we be playing our first team in this shitty trophy.

If this competition is so good for the U23 lads why are they not playing for League 1 and 2 sides instead of being mollycoddled in the academy teams?
Academy sides should have an upper limit of under 18's. Under 19's, 20's, 21's and 23's should be limited to international sides only.

7 games in 22 days, 5 of them away, 2 ;long journeys, 2 teams in higher divisions, finishing with less than 11 men more than once...not saying I agree we need a rest, but to be fair to the manager the schedule hasn't been easy.

I don't see the point of the u-23 age group. If you're over 21 you should be playing the man's game. If you're not ready by then you're unlikely to make it.

So much money in the higher divisions now that they can stock pile players until they are 23, and there are a good few who have never kicked a professional ball even then!

If I was a manager I would look at a player who has gone out on loan or a player from the lower leagues with experience above a premier U23.

Look at Sagaf, he looks to have far more nous then the academy lads we have had in the past on loan.

The likes of McCarron I would have liked to have seen them back themselves and stay, and say "ok, ill play 150 games here then get my move at 22/23 where I will go straight into a first team." I do understand that they might feel if they give up the opportunity it may never come again.

At Sunderland, age 21, I was offered a 5 yr deal and told I would be on the bench/squad in the Premier League most weeks, would not really be in the frame to start but would be in the first team squad. I decided to turn down the contract and drop a division and get first team action. I understand that is not everyone's mind set, but I am pleased I done it as now I have a career, games, experiences to look back on.

Brad Potts is a good example of somebody who has done it the hard way.

Just turned 25 and his next game will be his 300th which is no mean feat. Too many fancy dan players in those PL Academies.

Exactly, Brad should be looking at a 500/600+ appearance career barring injuries. May lose a few due to the level he is at and competition for places/rotation. But to have 300 at 25 is a massive achievement.

Just looking at the upcoming midweek fixtures, several of the teams who have U21 teams in the Trophy are also playing in the League Cup, some on same night.

Given how the big teams often play youngsters in the League Cup, I dread to think what some of the Trophy line-ups will be!

Leicester and Man City on Tues and Liverpool on Weds all have two teams playing on the same night, whilst Wolves and Chelsea are in Trophy action on Tues and League Cup on Weds.

Another shambles...

What's the rules for this joke of a cup?

Do we have to play so many first teamers that played in the last match?

If this was introduced to benefit England players it should specify that in the regulations. Some mentioned on here that one under 23 side had no English players?
