Elias Sorensen in on Loan - Striker

This guy seriously needs to improve if he is going to have a professional career - even at English tier 4 level.

He looks bloody useless so far - let hope he is just unfit and finds it quick.

I watched the YouTube clip of him scoring goals for Newcastle.
90% of them were neatly taken finishes from close range , noticeable though that in some cases he was barely challenged for the ball.
I suppose being optimistic, he is maybe one of those players who is just an out and out striker and offers little else to the team. That is the best I can say about him.
The way we play, that is a luxury we can’t really afford and I would only see him being more effective if we go more direct and perhaps play him alongside Loft.
It’s a funny one with strikers because over the years , there have been plenty of strikers who look to be nothing special but have the knack of getting on the end of things and taking a good ratio of chances.
He certainly doesn’t look like the type of striker , to me, that would be effective out wide, or as a lone striker. He is not going to be a creative spark or someone who stands out ability wise.

I think a couple of months playing for Workington might do him a power of good.

He'd get a load of goals and quite a few kicks from some hairy arsed builders playing for Pontefract Collieries and the like. Might give him an insight into the real world.

He is known at NUFC as being a clinical finisher around the penalty spot/6 yd box. The way we play, he will never really fit into that, he needs by line crosses and another forward near him, which he has never had.

He may not be ready for first team football or even good enough, but it would be nice to see teams play to the players strengths rather than put them into positions they are not comfortable with.

Bridge said in an interview he was a number 10, as did Scougall, Bridge may have now said he prefers the 8 or 6 as SP has said. But an 8 in a 3 man midfield does not really exist for me, as the players either side of Jones have to cover ground at times getting out to full backs (as a midfielder myself this role is torture, known as the graveyard shift!), well that is what has happened this season. An 8 is Sowerby, middle of the field, up and down, getting on the ball in his half and their half, tackling and shooting.

Granted the game has changed in the last ten years, but we seen last year with Lincoln and even ourselves, when we had a proper 2 in midfield, we dominated through strength first, then played when we won that battle.

Elvis made out that he was worth waiting for and would get 20+ goals, that looks highly unlikely. We would have been better off getting a more experienced striker in after all he is a 19 year old kid with no experience of playing regular games at a competitive level.

Seems like Blackpool seen he wasn't up to league football yet...

He is not the 20 goal player SP was waiting for, that lad decided not to come.

We would have been better off keeping Bennett another season than having Sorensen and Loft - seriously, he already has more goals than those two put together this season.

Agree, but the way the club, Holdsworth/Pressley et al spun it, it made you think this was the 20 goal striker they were talking about earlier, so hence the confusion.

Watching him get the ball to feet and spin away from scunthorpes defence I think sorenson will be good if used properly. But what chances of that

I know at times he may not have helped himself, but I agree Marko, he got the ball twice at Scunthorpe to feet and as you say spun from two defenders. The second time he put in a ball across the box which was a certain goal for us if we had got up with play, or a defender would have put it in their own goal on another day, they panicked and just left it not knowing who was next to them!

Time will tell with him, but by all accounts his best work comes in a 2 up front and in the box.

But as we know Lummy, Pressley doesnt believe in playing 2 up front

Whether it's just stubbornness, or a complete lack of a plan B - either way it WILL cost him his job

Aren't we playing 3 up front? They've all looked good in flashes. I just get the impression he's going to play the system come hell or high water. Maybe if he looked at the skills of the players a different way would work better?

Quite. How do we know they can't, other than by what Elvis is telling us? None of us has seen anything to the contrary yet. As I've said on another thread, let's see it tried out with Thomas on the left, McKirdy on the right, Fela and Sorensen up front and we'll see how it works. If it doesn't, fair [censored], at least it will show we had a plan B, more than we've got at the moment.

Any professional footballer should be able to play in any system because football is a simple game......You pass the ball to someone wearing the same colour shirt as yourself and then put the ball in the net at the opposite end of the pitch to your own goalkeeper.

McKirdy Jones Sagaf Thomas
Omolola with Hope/Sorensen/Loft

I dont want to be too harsh on the fella but Pressley's tactics are on the whole shite.

When you see them on a Saturday you wonder what they've been doing all week in training.

Abbott kept us in L1 for years even if the football wasn't great.

And at least he could identify a good player. As I remember he wanted to sign Arter, but he didn't want to move north. He even tried to sign Snodgrass at one point.

That is a million miles away from what we have now, where the policy seems to be signing players that no-one else wants, promising youngsters or lower league 'projects'.

What the general sham of three efl trophy shows is that the English under 23s are not as good as league 2 cloggers in the main.
This is clouded by numerous overage players and foreign imports but being a great prospect is one thing but being ready for the mans game is another. There are exceptions of course but they are rare. We are a few seasons into this shambles of a competition but these premier league glory kids are yet to leave a mark (thank God).
Sorensen might well be a clinical forward with great potential but we took a gamble and lost. He isn't ready. He isn't strong enough. He isn't brave enough. He isn't a good fit.
Good luck to the lad but I fear we have lost out on this striker position. Please prove me wrong.

The biggest problem is with the Custodians and Day, they've put us in the position we are in, poor players brought in on the cheap. You get what you pay for!

my understanding was Snodgrass was very close to signing James Chester would have signed but Man U wanted £300 k Hull paid that The other one that got away Stephen Dobbie We couldn’t get anywhere near the personal terms offered by Swansea

Lummy - would you not say that this pressing game that SP keeps taking about needs the 3 high energy players behind the striker/s, so makes 442 or 433 a bit irrelevant as not sure pressing works with the older style formations. As the defence is so gash and needs extra protection, would have though only 4231 would worjk wih what he wats to do.

Pete - strongly disagree with this. The u-23 system works well for most teams, as does the loan system. It is just DH keeps picking the wrong players. Might be true that a ceratin type of player needs to be selected for L2 football, but don't forget a lot of the players that get released end up in L2 and can ofetn go on to have good careers.
If Lummy can see that Sorensen needs to play in a certain type of system, why cannot DH when he signed him. How we can end up with a highly rated premier player and he cannot get in the team because he is not suited to the team baffles me.

In any formation you can be a high pressing team,it’s all about where you position your players when they have a goal kick or their keeper has the ball.

The players need to know what the trigger is,and be fit enough to carry it all out.

Under Simmo/Ward, granted more teams play out from the back now, we encouraged the first pass or throw.So we would back off,look disinterested,they would make the pass and bang we set off,forward nearest to the ball,midfielder back up,winger to the side,and smother them.

When we won league 2 we were basically a 4-3-3, under Ward a 4-3-3.

Yeah,I’m hearing a lot about an aggressive,high pressing football team this season,can only really think of one game I’ve seen it.

Regarding Sorenson,this is a real test for player and manager,does SP abandon his philosophy to try and get the best out of him,AND is Sorenson actually ready for this type of football.

The passing stats mentioned in another thread are a bit of a nonsense to me.

How many of them passes were actually forward.Jones fair enough as he still has to keep it in midfield.

On the passing stats, you are right - the Leeds keeper regularly has more touches than the other side combined!

Abbott could spot a player alright. Made the club load os money on Nakhi Wells, Paddy Madden, Rory Loy etc who all came in as strikers and all ended up playing on the wing.

Did Nakhi Wells play on the wing under Abbott? I can’t remember him even playing.

Yes.

They want to hang on to what they think are potentially good players, but there comes a point when they know they'll never improve without first team football.

And judging by the quality of many of our Premier League loan players, these big clubs are no better at identifying talent than we are. In fact often they're worse.
