I quite like listening to George Galloway but he doesn't half go on about the [censored] middle east.

Galloway sticks out to me as there is a fairly decent bakers in Preston called this and they did like a flaky bake job with bacon and beans on top and it was ace, his name triggers that memory.

I could eat one of those delicious flaky bakes right now and I wasn't hungry before.

I think everybody seems more confrontational these days. Debates have moved from actually listening to the other person, to getting in as much insults as you can and trying to win the shouting match. The young generation are particularly bad for it. If you have an opinion they don't like, they will scream abuse in your face and in some cases physically attack you for your beliefs, and truly believe they are completely justified in doing so. It's mental.

That's why we have Trump, Brexit, The Yellow vests etc Isn't it? Because people feel they are not being listened to? Wages are stagnant, prices going up, nothing the Government does works, but we have money to bomb to Syria and build train lines with no trains.

I watched an item on Channel 4 news last night about a school in Birmingham which is trying to teach their kids about equality and the LGBT community.

Because the school is 90% Muslim there have been lots of protests against the school, some claiming only white people produce gay offspring.

One man complaining about the protests riding roughshed over the democratic right of the school to teach such beliefs and he was black.

Just seemed to me there are a lot of circles to be squared in that little hotbed of multiculturism and diversity.

If they lose Peterborough tomorrow night, the chat is Corbyn will be toast.Lets hope chubby Thornberry goes too-she doesn’t like English patriots either as we know-calling Trump a racist and a sexual predator won’t look good on her CV either.

Labour has suspended a controversial member of its ruling national executive committee (NEC) after he was recorded claiming that an Israeli agent had infiltrated the party.

Lived through some torrid political times ,now is about the worst I can remember in my life time. There as always been some light from a political faction ,now I see none. Which ever direction you turn there is a major problem .For me Labour are not a credible option under the present leadership ,the Torries are a fractious mess at present.

No Diane Abbott doesn't. She had a sizeable majority in the 2017 general election - for Hackney and Stoke Newington but what was more surprising was that there were 7,000 Tory voters in Hackney. John Major held the record from his thumping majority in Huntingdon in 1992 until 2017 and now the record is held by George Howarth in Knowsley near Liverpool.

If you have even a tiny bit of humanity in you you wouldn't vote Tory they have set about tearing the fabric of our society apart with their austerity measures and the dismantling of the NHS and looking after the needy wealthy companies and individuals, sadly the opposition are not a lot better especially fascists like Farage going to be an intetesting election next time round a hung Govt me thinks, but anything's I suppose better than the Tory's or Brexit party.

No it doesn't. Once taxes drop below about 60% a fall in tax rates means a fall in revenue. That's why trumps tax cuts have resulted in the biggest us deficit ever.

Trumps policies have succeeded on the revenue side, however failed with the required cuts due to opposition from the democrats.

They democrats also have a policy of ' oppose anything the opposition does, whether in the National interest or not ' something we are familiar with.

That would explain why Eire, with low taxes, is so prosperous Marko.I only speak from personal experience-I would basically put my feet up if Corbyn raised taxes but I’m happy to pay 40/45pc on the basis I can afford it.There is a threshold at which point you basically say ‘what’s the point?’

As I have said many times,I would abolish vat and introduce a consumption tax-with food and other essentials being exempt or zero rated.The gaming industry works on a similar platform and raises huge amounts of tax

But Laffy is correct in saying high taxes affect behaviour. Put the income tax rate up to 60 per cent and he's not going to arsed to go into the office when he can shoot pheasants or whatever. There is currently a 28% CGT rate on residential property apart from your main residence. So if you'd bought a flat in London to rent out for £100k 20 years ago and now sold it for £500k you would pay over £100k in tax. You'd only ever sell it as a last resort. The only way to fix the so-called housing crisis and have more homes available to buy is to cut this CGT rate or have a CGT-free window to release thousands of properties on to the market.

The effect on behaviour is marginal. If you run a business or have a job earning 200k a year and Corbyn announces an extra £20 a week on tax you're not going to just quit and give up, are you? Put tax up from 50% to 90% and it's a possibility but that's not what Corbyn has proposed.
For the people who print the Telegraph and the Mail it is moot anyway because they exploit the tax loop holes to live in the Channel Islands or the Caribbean where the tax rate is effectively zero.


I didn't really understand the point about houses. If you have a business and sell say paper you pay taxes on the profits, CGT on the shares. If you buy traded shares you pay taxes on the gains so why should houses be different? 28% doesn't sound too onerous. When you look at houses in London my understanding is that most of the empty city centre houses are owned by foreigners through offshore companies, so they don't pay tax anyway- you just buy the shares which are BVI registered assets so the tax doesn't have any effect. I guess for UK based landlords it will have an effect but are people sitting on empty, unproductive houses just to save tax?

I would also point out that this govt has done more to stop tax evasion than most-Osborne was very good at this.Under the last Labour govt, tax avoidance was endemic and I should know as I witnessed it first hand.Some of the stuff being flogged was just plain immoral-and Osborne’s reforms have had a retrospective impact on those schemes.

When The Duke of Westminster died He paid no inheritance tax on his 8.6 billion estate This is tax avoidance and needs stopped

There is a difference between avoidance and evasion-I believe Gerald Grosvenor paid huge amounts of tax in his lifetime
