For that I am hugely apologetic Chedder. I apologise unreservedly that my oppion hasn’t matched yours.

You would think we were a perfectly run club according to some on here.

We played well against Salford but never kept that up, playing better today counts for absolutely nothing next week and lets not kid ourselves we hardly hit the post and bar four times as well as two disallowed goals whilst we peppered their goal all day - basically it was a crap game between two poor League Two sides, we get beat but some are getting giddy because we didn't play as shite as last week.

I think maybe James Phillips and Lummy were getting carried away today because we managed to string a few passes together and create one or two decent chances.

I think that says more about how dismal we've been this season than anything to get too excited about.

I just hope Pressleys now realises we haven't got the players for fannying about at the back and being a bit more direct at times might just get us out of this malaise.

Just watching match of the day it’s very hard to decide who played the best today. Contenders are Aston Villa Brighton and Carlisle United. I think we’re just shading it.

Your mention of Brighton there DB had me thinking back to the back end of November 1996, I remember being at the old Goldstone ground to see Carlisle win 3 - 1. Brighton were a basket case then, and I think they only managed to stay in the league at the end of that season by a last day win at Hereford. We seemed to be on an upward curve at that time, now I see Brighton in a great looking ground giving Spurs a tanking and I see us labouring to maintain a place above the bottom six in league 2, what went wrong.

Clearly it was implied that the new system / approach (which changed from 50 minutes onwards in the Oldham game and was built upon again today with a different formation) should be judged on a home performance.

We played well yesterday. All that was missing was a striker who stood on the penalty spot to finish the chances off. Olaf came way too deep.

What was the crack with the stewards?

The highlights show a bit of a scuffle after they score.

I'm talking about the changes in formation he has made in games since Gethin Jones came in, from his rigid 4-3-3 in an effort to shore up the leaky defence, not the change in playing style from the second half of the Oldham game.

When they scored the whole Newport team ran to our corner inciting the CU fans. A few fans ran to the barriers and politely told them to do one.
The stewards tried to grab a few of our fans and pull them out, other supporters pulled them back. A few fists started flying, initiated by the stewards who were out of order. When they realised our guys weren’t backing off they stepped back.
The scorer for Newport should be done for running across to our fans and inciting them.

Three of our last four league games 0-0, 1-0, 0-1.

First eight league games, only one 1-0.

Not as many conceded, but not as many scored since he changed the formations about to bolster the defence.

I am afraid supporters and more importantly Directors have to wake up and smell the coffee.The absolute truth is that we are going nowhere until substantial funds can be found.This means the Directors have to sell the club to person/s with enthusiasm and hard cash to give away.The vast majority of League 1&2 clubs are in the same mould.Our club has to be able to break away from the current system i.e.Loan players.We need our own contracted players to have any hope of becoming successful.

Unfortunately I can’t get to games because I work on Saturdays. That’s even harder than watching losing in the 96 minutes. Can someone answer , did the Newport player run to the Carlisle fans when he scored and if so please say no one was arrested . It looks like he did on you tube

Players seem to want to celebrate with the wrong supporters. Anyone who plays a bit would agree you score a screamer you then normally would go to your own . Disgusting. Hopefully no one was arrested

You need to make a complaint to Efl and anyone who is sick of this happening. If our own players score and nearly jump into the crowd he’s given a yellow card. We need Efl to know in numbers otherwise they won’t change the laws of the game. That’s what they told me last time

I think the problem we’re not winning games is the fact that our defence suits a back 5 but out attack suits a 4-3-3. I think that the full backs are under way more pressure when in a 4-3-3 because they get little support from the midfield and wingers and that if they get beat then there’s only one centre back behind them with the other marking in the box. I think we need Mckirdy behind the two strikers to float all over the place so he can’t be picked up but that means bridge or Sagaf drops out then I think you need a proper striker like loft who will get himself in the box while fella does the hold up play and finishes anything that loft doesn’t. Defence seems to have improved but we over compensate on our attack.

Ok constructive criticism about yesterday.

The standard of league 2 in general is appalling, I think it’s got worse, if that was possible, than previous seasons.

We didn’t do the arty farty stuff we went gung ho and I think the defence were more comfortable in that and the full backs could get forward. It probably was the best defensive performance of the season and we still lost.

Up front looked very poor. I like olomola as he is a fighter but no quality really.

I’d of started McKirdy instead of Hope. Hope still looks disinterested.

Overall we are a very poor side. However to be fair the players we do have are battlers and don’t shy away but there just not very good.

Going forward in the winter months when the pitches are heavy and crap and all teams play kick and run, I don’t think we have the players for it. There’s no one up front to hold the ball up to stop it coming back again. That team is really going to struggle.

18th is about right for this shower. I think the time has ran out for morecambe and between them and Stevenage this year.

Cheers for the reply. Yes it’s not on really. The only time it is maybe, is when a set of supporters have been shouting racist stuff and the player scores. You can understand that but most of these players have never had any reason to come over to our supporters.

It's interesting, Glenn Tamplin had hard cash and enthusiasm at Billericay Town. However in less than 3 years the pressure got to him and he's stepped down. As Laffy has said repeatedly, club ownership is now too much for one man. The answer has to be making all League 2 clubs more sustainable with lower player wages so that you can get fan ownership models to work financially.

Just seen the goal. Collin should have had that.

I`ve been to plenty matches home and away where Carlisle fans give dogs abuse to certain opposition players so i`ve nothing against them celebrating and giving it back to us when they score, it goes with the territory .

It was all rather surreal. As graemehud has said, the Newport player deliberately provoked our fans who rightly expressed their annoyance. Within a few seconds the bully boy response team came out from the police bunker a few yards away and started to try and drag our fans on to the pitch. It all calmed down in a minute or so. Personally, I think Newport should be reported to the EFL for provoking the entire situation. If the Newport player had celebrated on the other side of the pitch there would have been no reaction from our fans other than disappointment at the result.

Yes agree but he’d be better than Hope currently.

Hope gets a lot of stick but he is the only one in the squad with any real flair and quality, for this level, at the moment. He hasn’t done much this season at all though and probably best for everyone he moves on in January.

Yes but it annoying if our players or any player from any team celebrates with there own fans in a situation like yesterday he would get a yellow card. A Carlisle fans provoked could have been arrested. Not on. I have said it before and i’ll Say it again. If a fan went to the opposition supporters like that he would be arrested. The Newport player could have caused a riot if those fans were from Millwall. Who would everyone be talking about if that was the case? Oh how bad the Millwall fans are etc.

I don’t often post on a match thread, cos when I’m working I often miss large trenches of the game, just concentrating on trying to get the right setting on the camera, so what I see are F numbers and ISO readings. The game breaks down into patches of light and shade, so not too relavent to those without a similar affliction. That’s why I enjoy reading the match thread afterwards, to get the opinions of fellow fans on that game.

As DB says, I shouldn’t moan if I don’t post so here goes.

I really didn’t want to go. It’s just not one of my favourite places. So far from the motorway. Since they came back in the League I’ve never seen us win there. It has always been a clarty pitch and difficult to find the right entrance, which seems to change every season for media. I had had a couple of asthma attacks in the week, so wasn’t looking forward to carrying my gear round the stadium.

Got on the supporters bus at Penrith. Got a park on the roadside. Result! £6 parking saved, always feel better about the day if I can get parked for free. A pleasant journey, no holdups, plenty of chatter. . oh yes, I had crispy cake, rude not to.

The bus parked on the roadside near the little walk through. Great, the cut through leads to the corner where media went in last season, so a nice easy amble. Got there to find the gates locked, a steward told me to carry on walking to the next corner of the ground where the media entrance was. Got there, no inhaler needed, yay.

Dumped my gear in the corner of the pitch surround near the tunnel. First thing to notice was the pitch was immaculate, thick and green and well manicured. I know we have drawn Newport early in the season but still, particularly when you consider Rugby has been played on it too, an awful lot of work has gone on to ge the pitch up to that standard. All the way round the pitch, replacing the ankle deep mud that has trapped me in previous seasons, plastic pitch makes a smart run off, and provided plenty of room for photographers.

The stadium has clocks, big digital jobs, on the ground in three corners of the ground. I was asked not to sit too near the corner when I worked the top end, so as not to block the view of the clock from the main stand. I obeyed instruction but noticed the stewards were in front of that corner clock all game. Led me to wonder which was worse, us with no clock, them, with three, but a lot of fans couldn’t actually see what what time they said.

The media room at Rodney Parade is a portacabin. It has tea and coffee and biscuits. Not Forest Green but perfectly adequate.

I toddled off to the Ladies in the home end. Again adequate, they wouldn’t pass a Hinch test but not dirty and the locks worked. A nice touch was someone had had a wipe round the floor and door with a cleaner that left a clean smell in the air, just made it seem like some one cared. I thought back to the Oldham game at BP. I went to the ladies in Paddock South. I went to the end cubicle it wouldn’t lock. I went to the other end of the three, it wouldn’t lock. Crossing my fingers to avoid superstition I tried the middle one which did lock. I felt like Red Riding Hood! The difference of inadequate locks and no clean smell is the difference, between cared for and unkempt in my perception, although the actual cleanliness was similar. Little things matter.

Back to pitchside and the team came in. I shook hands with the gaffer. I had shaken hands with the gaffer before the Oldham match, I wasn’t risking not shaking hands at Newport. If I hadn’t I would be convinced that that late goal was all my fault, doesn’t really help that it wasn’t though.

First half I was sat behind the bi line where the 18 yard box joins, Carlisle fans were just round the corner on the end of the side. It’s not often Carlisle shoot toward their own fans in the first half when we’re away. Normally the home teams most vociferous fans are at one end bhind the goal and the home fans like to kick to them second half. However Newport don’t have fans at the ends, just the sides. I asked why they preferred kicking that way second half and was told it was nearer the changing rooms!

I thought for most of the game we were on top. I was happy with the team selection. I’m a fan of Hope, he works really hard, all over the pitch. Just don’t get that folk think he’s disinterested, if anything he cares too much, I just wish he could relax a bit. I’m sure if he gets one goal others will come. I’d hoped if Hallam played the first hour then McKirdy could use his pace and trickery later in the match, but Newport were a very fit side and didn’t really tire to give Mckirdy an advantage.

I thought Bridge was everywhere. Well he was everywhere, every second photo I took was of Bridge, he did well.

We were the away team but even so to be critical we were very defensive. In some ways that’s great, we look stronger at the back. We looked calm and not in any real danger til caught with the sucker punch at the end. However for much of the game Hope and Fela were forced deep and it was difficult to see where goals were going to come from.

I honestly believe the players in this team are League 2 quality, a couple beyond that but what we so lack is that marque signing. Oh for a Jabo, some one who can play back to goal, hold the ball up. Our forwards that played yesterday, all of them, would benefit so much, would have so much more confidence if we had that person to lead the line. Those sort of marque players are the ones that cost the money and getting the right one or two can be the difference between promotion and relegation. They are very rarely, if at all, young loan players because they have built their knowledge through playing games and understand lower league football.

Anyways, back to the match it started to rain just before half time. Second half I was down the other end, very exposed to the elements and the rain got heavy. I managed to get the waterproofs on my camera gear, first priority, then started to get my own gear on. Coat on, hood up, towel over my knees, that’ll do. Still getting the shots, but laptop away cos it can’t cope with rain. More rain, so on with the waterproof trousers. One leg in, Carlisle attack, both feet down one leg. . .trapped . . . if we score and I swing round I will be lying on the turf like a beached whale! Don’t care, just Score please, the lights right, the focus is right JUST SCORE. .. the keeper saves. . I pull my leg out of my leggings, ripping them in the process, but manage to sort myself out without falling off my stool, so could be worse.

When the goal came, it wasn’t like it was coming. We hadn’t been last ditch defending. It was just a very good strike and it cost us. It’s happened to us before, we have done it to other teams before. It just hurts so much more when we have played well and got to the 95th minute. I don’t buy this “we should be beating Newport”, they are in the same division as us. They are riding a wave at the moment, the whole club, playing and and non playing working together. Good luck to them.

Thought the way their players ran back to goad the Carlisle fans was a bit much. I was at the other end so don’t know what went on. I heard punches were thrown on both sides. One lad was pushed head first over the wall onto the pitch. As far as I know there were no arrests but a few folk put out. There was one and three quarter sides of home fans, all of whom would have loved to have their player’s celebrate in front of them. To choose to goad the away fans was poor in my view, I wouldn’t like to see our players do that in such an obvious manner but heyho.
It seemed a hell of a long way back to the motorway. . . and then you realise you are still south of Birmingham and it’s still hours til home.
Oh well, it’s two weeks til the next away and that’s just a nice short trip to . . . Plymouth.

Yes same playing style as David Amoo....always left the pitch with clean shorts....however give Hope his due he's scored some important goals for us, including that cheeky and smart one where he stayed behind the back line waiting for the goalie to throw it out , before sprinting in to tuck it away. Cant for the life of me remember who it was against but was a foul freezing night.

Out of interest why did you post "bi line" ?

Cos, I can't spell, or more accurately, there are cetain words that I have spelt wrong so often that I can never remember which way is the right way, and invariably spell them wrong. I meant byline but when I type it spelled that way it looks wrong, so I change it and then that way looks wrong as well, so I just take a punt on it. I have terrible problems spelling necessary but usually my spellchecker sorts that out, it doesn't seem to cope with biline/byline/by-line though.

Looking at the goal if you watch it again, Elliott is the main player at fault for backing off the scorer, then he proceeds to have a right go at everyone else.

It's always hard to get perspective from the camera angle when it's positioned so high. You get little idea if players blocked the keepers view initially.

My feeling at the time, was; Wow, what a shot B@@@s!!! It was hit with speed and power. If he'd saved it then it would have been a worldie save and he would have been a hero, fine margins.

As some one said, every goal comes from a defensive mistake made at some point in the build up to the goal. My initial thoughts were Great Goal rather than Whoops.

I'd say it was more Bridge actually as Newport's number 20 makes a clever run to pull Elliott away. Bridge was too slow to react to the pass which allowed their lad to get the shot away

Well there you go. I always thought it was a reference to die-cutting, an accurate industrial cutting process.

For all the talk of McKirdy not being able to play up front, I can't say I've ever been that impressed by Hope when he plays central. World of difference to when he plays out wide imo

Agree Windy. Hope has scored 34 goals in 98 (32) games. Not many playing as a centre forward I would hazard a guess.
