18/19 - Exeter (H) Match Thread

Really enjoyed the game today.
What struck me was the difference between the game today and the away match.
It was hard to make a case for us deserving anything from the game in Exeter but today was a much closer contest.
Felt like it might be a long season ahead in August but now came away thinking we might have sneaked that.
Real game of 2 halves. Very impressed with Exeter 1st half. Can see why they are doing well.
We did stand off them and let them play as we looked lightweight in midfield. Sowerby's loss was felt and Slater struggled.
Taylor looked like he had shown the players the tape of the Northampton game as long early balls were hit forward and Gerrard had an unusually uncomfortable opening 20 minutes.
This was excerbated by us playing needless long balls to a side without a number 9.
Thought we were lucky to go in just 1 down really. One side looked like it had 3 new players starting and just a short time training together.
Fair play to Pressley at half time. The game was passing Slater by so it was a good change to make and he obviously screamed at them - "play the [censored] ball on the deck" or something similar.
Different game second half. Right from the off a clever centre, hitting the ball out of play into the corner to push them back.
One from the John Beck school but it was a good idea.
Once we got the ball down, moved, passed, stopped hitting long balls. it started to gel a bit.
Very difficult to make a judgement on the new players after just 1 game. But..
For me, Scougall really made a difference. Something about him. Not sure what it was for me really, but a confidence, a way of moving the ball, the way he just played, not sure what but something about him really impressed me.
It wasn't a stellar debut but there was something about him that stood out.
Callum O'Hare had clearly been identified and took a lot of rough stuff and in fairness to him, he took it well. He's obviously technically very talented and the step over for a shot by someone I can't remember was lovely.
Not in the same position but he reminded me a bit of what we've seen from Glendon at times. Very neat and tidy and did well on a first start but I was surprised at the MOM.
Thomas looks like he could be a player. In and out of the game but the first half effort with the outside of the foot really was top drawer.
Hope worked tirelessly again and his effort against the bar was absolutely fantastic and deserved to go in.
What can you say about Jamie Devitt. An up and down game. Sees balls no others can and makes a difficult up and down free kick look easy. Sign that man up now!
Really pleased to see how well Gary Miller is playing and thought he played very well today.
The best player on the pitch for me was Franz Beckenbauer, sorry, Tom Parkes.
Not as easy for a big-ish defender in a back 4 rather than 5 but boy is he a good player.
A number of the usual very good clearances and interceptions coupled with the all too infrequent drop of the shoulders, burst of pace over 10 or 15 yards to push forward and 25 yard piledriver. Beautiful.
He really should and must be encouraged to come out with the ball, particularly when we are being pressed high up more often.
I thought overall it was a really good effort today. 3 key players gone. New lads coming in. A decent side up against us in good form.
And we get to see a real moment of top flight football quality with Devitt's free kick.
The bench looks the strongest its looked for ages and you'd imagine as the side gets fitter and used to playing with one another it'll only get better.
And it 's still light walking down the Warwick Road after the game.
Reasons to be cheerful.

I’ve given my view on the match, where’s yours? Nowhere, just a few posts criticising once again. Pathetic man.

It was a disappointing performance, I thought, but I am not moaning or being negative about it after we have won so many games and done so well.
In the first half our play was very scrappy but we did well to hang in there and came good in the second half.
I am not sure what the crack is with Simpson but we needed him coming on in the last 15 minutes.
There were times when we nearly put together some flowing moves, but it didn’t quite happen today.
Understandable given the new faces and new manager that we weren’t very fluent..
You could see us needing another three or four games before the new boys start to gel.
That’s OK because it goes with the territory when you sign loads of short term options and with the squad strength we now have there is every reason to be optimistic.

My view on Simpson, albeit based on just 2 brief sub appearances is that he isn't quite ready just yet.
I think he did really well against Port Vale and was involved with the goal but struggled against Northampton.
He's come from playing in a league way below ours and will need a bit of time.

Good report NCF-always balanced and with realism.

I thought he was clart at Northampton, until Cullen came on we crossed to a non-existent striker, when he came on we couldn’t get the ball past the first man’s shin pads.

Etuhu was poor by his own standards, but at least he showed that he knew it. And his standards in my opinion are high, our best player and lets Devitt do his thing.

We set off very slowly today giving Exeter the initiative this set the tempo for the first half, Park could possibly have seen a red for the pullback that led to the goal....Second half we were much sharper in movement and passing and fully deserved the equalizer when it came...The false 9 doesn,t work and we need a focal point up front hopefully this will come when Cullen is fully fit...On the whole a good point.

I wasn’t pointing out how many likes I received at all, I couldn’t really care less about that sort of thing, I was referring to the likes other people received for calling you out, shows people don’t agree with your negative, antagonistic way of thinking.

Listen, we’ve had 10 years of shit ownership and for the most part shit football. I’ve been one of the most critical of the football club’s board both on here and at forums and phone ins, I want the old boys club gone as much as anyone else.

However, when new faces arrive on the club’s board, the club seem to be heading in a different direction under apparent new leadership, the team is playing decent football, we’re making some half decent signings for a change (whether it be on loan or on short term deals) and the club is doing good things then me and many other fans think credit is due. They do things badly and get criticised, they do things better and they get a bit of credit - surely that’s fair enough? Nobody’s “tossing off over new signings”, nobody’s “licking the cheese off Jenkins knob”, we’re just enjoying a rare bright spell in a dark time for the club with hopefully some better times ahead under new leadership.

Using a match thread to have a snipe at fans who were impressed at the club’s recent transfer business just because we went a goal down is a bit daft and is exactly the sort of negativity folk are sick of. Why make out that we look a bit silly because we were 1–0 down? It’s almost as if you couldn’t wait until we were a goal down to have a go. We came back to draw 1-1 with most of the new signings contributing pretty well with hopefully more to come - is that still silly?

Why not enjoy the football, 1 defeat in 10 is impressive at any level. See where the season takes us and hopefully come the summer we’ll have a promotion and ne ownership to enjoy. Or are you still going to be sniping at the club for using the loan market, short term deals, fans tossing themselves off and generally anything else you can think of connected to CUFC?

I fear that our inferior goal difference will cost us dearly on the last day of the season.

Bugger it the sky is falling in - I am out of here and driving to Caldbeck to avoid the debris.

I felt a bit sorry for Etuhu, he was having to cover too much ground and didn't have other strong tackling players along side him, it showed in the first half more than the second.

Agreed, as much as O’Hare was good technically, there is so much more to a midfielders game in league 2, Sowerby for example would have ran all over him today. Exeter’s midfield bossed the first half and as mentioned, Etuhu was having to do too much work.

All in all though there were decent signs for it being their first game in the second half, maybe a tweak of personnel or formation at times may see some lads flourish.

Desperately lacking pace over the top again,but hopefully with Cullen getting fit and Thomas getting more games this well come.

Cullen clearly isn't ready either, Pressley is getting him back to fitness by playing him, as Sheridan did with Gerrard. Why not start with Simpson and then sub in Cullen for a couple of games until Cullen gets stronger? We had the situation where crosses came into the box yesterday and there was no one there. Devitt then moved forward and he was expected to win the ball in the air, he actually headed over from the edge of the 6-yard box at one stage. Even if Simpson isn't up to the standard he is better than nothing, or as an alternative recall Bennett from loan. My fear is that Cullen is going to get injured again, then what do we do? Season over?

We were talking about this during the game yesterday. No-where near the same league as Lincoln, but they were very easy to go down yesterday. They seemed to win over the ref early on for some reason. Not disputing their goal wasn’t a free kick, but we should have had one at the other end a minute before.

The rough and tumble of League Two will have been a real eye opener for O'Hare him but looks to have the ability to adapt.

They had Martin, Taylor and Law in the middle who have been around a bit.

Ryan Bowman looked a bit of a handful when he came on. Would have been a good signing for Carlisle.

We were talking about Bowman on the way home, gone from SPL regular to division 4, carrear going backwards or not?

He'll be getting more money at Exeter than Motherwell. I think his wife comes from down that way.

Never seen Bowman play but my dad watched Motherwell quite a bit on BT and said “see how long it takes him to commit a foul” - he did two in about 2 mins! Looks a rough, old style centre forward, love to see that as there’s nothing worse than a big lad up front who won’t put himself about. Gerrard seemed to relish the confrontation aswell.

I remember when Grealish came up here with Notts County on loan from Villa and got kicked about a bit, he didn’t look like he enjoyed it one bit. O’Hare looks like a similar type of player but really put a shift in yesterday I thought and looked like he was enjoying the challenge. The more games he plays the better he’ll get imo.
