Holy – 7 – Some solid goalkeeping to keep us in the game first half, distribution can be improved.
Back – 5 – Struggled defensively at times and not quite sharp enough in possession.
Armer – 5 – Dependable defensively, got into some great positions offensively in the first half.
Whelan – 5 – Solid enough defensively but poor on the ball.
Huntington – 5 – See Whelan.
Mellish – 4 – Ok in defence, looked lost in midfield. Instead of (now predictably) pushing him into midfield when he’s already knackered we should bring a genuine midfielder on and take a defender off if we want to support our forwards.
Guy – 5 – Needs more support in midfield, battled manfully but one against four is a bit unfair.
Moxon – 2 – Slow, sloppy, unfit. Maybe he thinks he’s made it as a professional because he scored a goal midweek, but this sort of timid half-arsed performance is unacceptable. Did his regular trick of vanishing into this air second half but even his first half effort was fairly awful.
Gibson – 6 – Some dribbling, passing and a shot on target. Playing himself back into form but still overplaying frequently.
Dennis – 0 – Wasted the best opportunity of the match and floated around (mostly in offside positions) like he didn’t give too much of a toss. McDonald barely raised a sweat all afternoon up against such a pathetic, powderpuff, uninfluential waste of space. I really don’t care how many goals he’s scored this season, as a footballer (and on today’s effort) he sucks arse. Simpson’s decision not to substitute him was laughable, frankly.
Stretton – 5 – Some great effort without ever really threatening but playing with the handicap of Dennis alongside would be tough for any player. Harshly subbed when a combination with Patrick upfront would’ve caused Crewe more problems.
Subs:
Patrick – Had a shot on target, that was one more than Dennis managed in 94+ minutes.
Harris – Had an impact, but nobody else on the pitch was making any effort at that point. Wanted the ball and tried to use it intelligently, which was a novelty today.
Charters – Replaced Guy.
