Player Ratings - Salford (Away) 19th Nov

Holy – 8 – Possibly a little hesitant for the goal, but honestly made some absolutely world class saves in the first half.

Back – 5 – Involved the opening goal but in truth fluffed two easy chances and looked vulnerable defensively.

Armer – 6 – Struggled a little in possession but, as ever, reliably defensively.

Feeney – 6 – Looked solid before his injury.

Huntington – 7 – Not tested on the deck much (thankfully) but tremendous in the air at the back.

Mellish – 6 – Looked great in defence, lots of pointless running and vacant positioning in midfield and an awful miss for a much overdue goal.

Guy – 9 – After the equaliser the game was in the balance, but his goal turned the tide. Fans up, team up, the crest of the wave this created carried us to the end of the game. Almost as important as the goal was the booking he took for the team in the first half, it was an extremely important transition for him to stop, very professional.

Moxon – 7 – Passing not quite on the bob today despite a lovely ball for the overlap which brought the first goal, but a massive performance in terms of heart and some decent set pieces.

Charters – 7 – An excellent defensive performance in an advanced position, nullified Watt for long periods of the game. Possibly the pass of the afternoon with a peach of a cross field ball to Edmondson on the left wing.

Edmondson – 8 – Took a huge amount of weight for the team leading the line (effectively) by himself. Too isolated at times (through no fault of his own), but the work he does for the side is invaluable. Brings so much benefit to the team to have a big unit up top who occupies defenders and makes space for others....

Dennis – 5 – Even moving in slow motion he managed to score twice, simply by making sure he was sniffing around the six-yard box. The rest of his game? Slower than your Grandma, weak in the air, poor on the ball (the few times he touched it) and his all-round contribution to the team was utterly abysmal. Does that matter?

Ellis – 7 – Defensively excellent, lost count of the number of crosses he blocked on our right-flank.

Whelan – 7 – Possibly the best I’ve seen him play. It’s not easy to slot into a central defensive three mid-half and then be played out of position to accommodate Mellish’s switch to midfield, but by the end of the game he was looking like Alan Hansen.

Stretton – Shame Simpson asked him to play in midfield and not upfront but did a decent job for the team.

Great day out and brilliant 40 minutes from the team after Salford equalised. Shame about the injuries but thankfully they weren’t missed which is great testament to the lads who came on. Good to see we have good options all over the pitch and you were confident of all four subs making an impact, credit to Simmo for building a capable squad which is coping well with a lengthy injury list. Looking forward to some interesting games in December which could shape our season.

A word on Salford - they’re poor. Vast money spent, massive turnover of management and playing staff and they look no further forward. They’ll pass the ball about all day but can’t score goals, no creativity and a poor defence, bad sign when your best attacker is your full-back! Neville and his arrogance has got the team he deserves, not that he’ll be too bothered lining his pockets in Qatar with his other Salford shareholder Beckham.

I thought back looked very good. Ellis needed someone in front of him to protect him. His lack of pace was highlighted. No news on senior?

Huntington was excellent, won everything in the air.

Charters, still not sold on him. But a 4 1 win, difficult to pick fault. I would still start with Gibson or Stretton.

Last season people were saying Dennis isn't scoring but look at his runs, look at his movement. The problem was that the people around him weren't scoring either. This season they are. A couple of old fashion goal hanger goals. Backed up by some runs that just threw the Salford defence.

At 1 0 Salford looked very good. The running and passing from deep was very good. Huge testament to our 3 centre backs that we kept them at bay. Then they just folded. With the ability on show you've got to wonder what goes on there. And when it'll end
