Anyone hear it just now? Incredible to think this is the first new stuff we've heard from them in 20 years. Definitely one for Squire fans. Can't help thinking they sounded a bit like Driveshaft from Lost, but I can live with that B)

Love to see them have the guts to release something under another name with a different singer to see what people really thought, in a position to do it.

WTF was that?

IB: "Well that's the UK entry in this year's Eurovision competition taken care of, what's next?" he probably didn't say when he finished writing it.

I like it. Standard Roses fare, upbeat lyrics, catchy riff (with a hint of Seahorses about it), good solo.

Not sure what people expected really - was always going to be something short, sharp and simple for the first single. Would imagine some of the more adventurous stuff will be on the album... hopefully arriving before the gigs next month!

Im not sure what i expected tbh but i didnt think it was very good. Add to the fact itll never be off the radio and sadly ill get sick of it. Should just have released made of stone again. I never tire of listening to that.

Listened on youtube and I'm sure one of the comments described it as a "bad Seahorses tune" which summed it up nicely for me. Expected more from them.

Sounds more like a follow up from Bob The Builders' chart hits all those years ago rather than The Stone Roses...

On the topic of The Stone Roses.

Got two standing tickets for the Saturday but fucked up and booked my holiday for the same week.

Only interested in covering my costs if anyone's interested?

The chance of Team GB winning further gold medals at the Rio Olympics was improved yesterday as the organisers agreed to include slagging off The Stone Roses new single as an event.

Rio 2016 co-ordinator Simoninho Williamsinho said, “The level of competitiveness shown on social media when composing broadsides about, what in truth, is an average, rather than ‘bad’, song suggests to me that this will be a hotly contested event.

“Also, it will give unfit men in their forties a chance of winning an Olympic medal. Which they wouldn’t do if we restricted it to actual sports, and they don’t play golf.”

The Brit contingent are expected to face stiff competition from Australia where they don’t know much about The Stone Roses but are very keen on moaning about anything British.

Jake Lee, a music fan whose tastes are much more advanced than yours, said, “I used to like them but I pretend that I don’t because I don’t want my friends who like jazz to laugh at me.”

His wife Eleanor Lee said, “Sometimes when he comes home drunk he puts The Stone Roses album on and sings along to all the songs with a little tear in the corner of his eye.

“But when he wakes up the next morning he sneaks downstairs and hides it behind a copy of Bitches Brew.

“He’s really quite a sad little man”.

Lovely scoop like for the Roses those Manchester shows, criminal prices being paid to see the band of the Hipster.

Is it that bollocks where you buy vouchers and then exchange them for a crap pint at these "outdoor gigs" still?

Its just more of the same sounds like its off an old album..

Not sure of the point other than making money after a gap of 20 years might have hoped for a slight change of direction or more adventurous

Fans will like it I suppose

James were the best band to come out of that era and are still going strong now. Seen them a few times and are by far one the best live bands I have ever seen but seem to have slipped under the radar compared to the Stone Roses.

On the topic of James - What a video... tear in the eye stuff, worth watching right through.

Maybe you're more of a Scouting for girls kind of bloke?

Sometimes it can take a few listens to like a tune. They've made so many classics it was always going to get scrutinised what ever they released.

I'd disagree they were on the radar but they were a bit more student, middle class compared to the Roses who were aving it like the most of the working class in the UK were.

Loads are great, best seeing bands when on the up - know a lad who threw in his job to go a Roses Tour round Europe back in the day.

Quite fancied going this, brilliant band.

I do like a few of the classic Stone Roses tunes but it's hard to escape the facts...

- They have very little material and 75% of that is dreadful anyway
- They are awful live, only Squire seems any good at his job
- They seem like a right bunch of c**ts, Mani excepted, possibly

Don't get me started on Oasis.

Some interesting points being made. I listened last night and I thought it was ok. It certainly made me listen to other albums this morning. Absolutely fantastic stuff.

Stone Roses divide opinion. Most either love them or hate them. Probably as a lot of their stuff is similar I guess so if it's not your thing its not your thing.

And I like Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel but I wasn't at Woodstock or New York - I think the whole Madchester thing spread a bit wider than the north west. You don't have to have "been there" to appreciate it and get it. Saw James live twice including at Alton Towers. They were brilliant but the music hasn't aged as well as Stone Roses. Never liked the Happy Mondays!

Interesting to see some of the young folk are listening to them now. Must be like me listening to the Beatles in the 90's!!

The thing that makes the Roses stand out for me is that they were pioneers. In many ways they were truly the first to do what they did - not just the sounds, but the look, the feel, and almost the whole genre of music that was spawned in their wake.

Same goes for the Beatles, except in their case they did it several times over. I doubt we'll ever see that again.

That's what really sets the Beatles apart for me. In a 4 year period from 65-69 they released 5 absolute top notch albums (Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper, White Album, Abbey Road). There might be other artists who have released one or two records of that quality but has anyone got 5 that good? (Bowie possibly?).

Not only that but if you listen to Past Masters Volume 2 there is another album's worth of high quality released during that time as non-album singles or even thrown away as B-Sides. There can't be anyone else who had the quality control turned on quite so high to release so much great stuff, in such a short space of time, most of it totally innovative and highly influential on everyone who came afterwards. They might not be your favourite band but the idea that anyone is into music and finds the Beatles overrated is mind boggling.

I love the original Stone Roses album and a lot of the non album stuff on Complete Stone Roses but wasn't that impressed with Second Coming. Would love to see them live though - was really hoping they'd been lined up for a Glastonbury headline slot, but not to be.

Best way to experience something though is do it yourself JFF. Basically what subcultures are all about. Next best thing is talking to someone and asking questions to someone one who really has lived through an era and is clearly informed on what went on in it. Became a hipster thing all this Madchester and especially the Roses in many ways, no wonder the Monday's can still pull off a tour now and again. I know plenty of older lads who won't go near these Roses gigs this summer. Seen the term "plastic mancs" used this week!

The fact there ain't many decent bands coming through don't help to be fair mind.

I was 16 when the first album came out and went to Spike Island the following year. It was a fantastic album and the vibe around the whole thing was amazing.

However, they were formed in 1983 and in 33 years they have released one brilliant album and one entirely average album.

So, I really don't get the total wankfest about them to be honest. One brilliant album in 33 years and people are comparing them to The Beatles? Seriously?

Just AN Other band realistically.

I think just because somebody wasn't around when whatever music was released shouldn't mean that they can't have an opinion on it. The people that were 16/18 when the first album came out should be in their 40s now? Does that mean these people aren't allowed an opinion on the new single because they're too old?

An album or music can be as significant as it can be to anybody whenever they listen to it.

Spot on. It seems to be an opinion that only seems to affect 'popular' music. Nobody says you can't appreciate Macbeth or listen to Beethoven because they are before your time. People are happy to watch and enjoy films that were made before they were born (Star Wars for example, seems to have timeless popularity) but if your musical tastes stretch before your era then some people can't cope with that. "Why do you like The Clash?.Aren't they before your time?",
Not worth dignifying with an answer.

Having an opinion on music and being part of a subculture are two very different things.

There really hasn't been a subculture due to English music in years like. Over the last 50 years being young seems to be worse and worse really, just have to look at how few go Football and really enjoy it to see that I think.

Aye I see where you're coming from. To be honest it probably has a hell of a lot to do with the internet these days.

Depends how you look at it as well though, there are things going on. Carlisle's own The Lucid Dream has been one of the front runners in a resurgence of Psychedelic music in recent times, notably playing a festival called Liverpool Psych Fest which has been on for the past three years getting bigger each year and it has led to a psych fest in Manchester. Last year I even seen Joey Barton and Adam Lallana there with my own eyes.

There has also been a movement with house music, Warehouse Project in Manchester has been going for years now and is also something that's going to be remembered by this generation for years to come. Loads of things have happened as a result in in its popularity all over, even normal lads (not event organisers) in Carlisle putting their own nights on here with big named DJ's coming to the city. So people aren't just sitting on their arses doing nothing. Granted they're not the illegal rave days of times gone by, but that has been and gone.

Things have changed and they always will. Plenty of things are worse, but I think you'll always have young people who will get off their arses and do something about it.

The Internet has loads of positives and negatives, can't be arsed listing them to be honest. Main ones to me being the number of people who don't get involved in conversation now, when travelling etc it's far to easy to look on your mobile for something you want rather than asking the locals - which is much better in my opinion as you find out more hidden gems. To be fair one massive positive it does have is bringing people with similar interests and aims together more.

I probably don't see much of these other scenes as I don't get involved in them or put myself in a position to really, ask some folk here to go watch a band and its met with "Brickyard is shit" or a complaint about the standard of the ale, ha ha. I expect it wasn't great in the 70s and 80s at various famous gig places either. I would have gone see that Lucid Dream lot in Munich if they ever trapped.

Football scene must be awful for young ones now, expensive and you are likely get in trouble if you even swear - some do very daft stuff but nothing that would have been met with similar treatment in eras gone by. When you lot did that Del Boy thing it summed it up really, anything heavier would probably have seen you all nicked or banned and not many can be done with bringing that on (I certainly can't, my way of protest is just not to go now) especially when few will follow and make a stand these days in England due to the way the nation is and how they may be punished, although I feel many use this an excuse to not get involved and just rattle on about how knacked it is on Facebook!

These Festivals abroad always look good, would love to go that one in Budapest or that one in Serbia, EXIT I think it is called. Probably do them and have cash in your pocket for price of a weekend at V.

Yeah, my main pet hate is groups of lads on their phone in a pub. There's no excuse and it looks absolutely ridiculous.

Aye I think the best advice with the Brickyard is to stick to the cans of Red Stripe! The place has it's day sometimes but they seem to struggle to get quality stuff in. The Fire Station was doing some good stuff before the floods so hopefully that carries on when it's up and running again. I think TLD have another tour announced soon actually, I've seen them in Europe before and it was class so it's a shame they never played Munich.

Haha we didn't expect to get in as the billionaires to be honest - I think the security's intentions were to be heavy handed when we turned up but they changed their tune when the News and Star photographer turned up which was a stroke of luck or things may have gone differently.

V Festival etc are an absolute joke. I'm going to Glastonbury this year and it costs a packet but away from the main stages it's a proper experience. Heard good things about that one in Serbia. Been to a couple in Spain, Primavera in Barcelona with Blur headlining a few year ago and they were unbelievable. My Bloody Valentine as well. Nice atmosphere.

I would struggle to pay some of the prices in England now. Seen Weller in Munich for 55 euros and it was pretty poor, wouldn't go again to see Wekler like but saw Miles Kane for 20 euros in a tiny venue and that was superb. Prices can be bad abroad as well as England though. Sure TLD were in Berlin at some place when I was there but never made it, must be full of top venues Berlin - happily live there for a year to really get to know it.

One regret, although I ain't a massive Roses fan, was not going to see them at Razmatazz in Barcelona when they finally came back - could have had a ticket but passed it off. Pretty small, indoor venue - the type many had been on about wanting to see them in as oppose to these stadiums and fields.

Following an upcoming/small band around is great, get to loads of new places at a decent price. I ain't really in to the music but myself and lads from School who went School with a lad out of Falling Red always talk about going see them in Europe - although we would be a bit different to the crowd I imagine!
