So, all up to build up of the euros we heard that they were up for anything that ISIS / ISL /"so called " Islamic state could throw at them

But they can't detect or stop a flare gun etc being smuggled in.

Where were they last night in the stadium ? and as for those stewards - they wouldn't get a job a brunton park...

Complete joke.

I live over here nowadays near Rennes. I go and watch the team on a regular basis. What I can tell you about stewarding and policing in France is that the 'pat down' and bag search is not a Police responsibility (just the same as the UK). This would have been done by a private security firm, who for this tournament have probably employed an army of students and previously unemployed. Given them very little training and are probably paying peanuts. So not the most professional workforce.

Outside the ground..... just the same as the UK. I certainly wouldn't say that the Gendarmerie or CRS (riot Police) are out of there depth. In France there are just the same problems with hooliganism. When Rennes play in either a local derby or against Marseille of PSG. These games always have a higher level of policing including water cannons. The Gendarmerie over here are probably better equipped and more experienced in crowd control than the UK Police.

One of the main questions that needs to be addressed is why put England in Marseille? Marseille fans have the worst reputation in France for violence so surely someone must have taken this into account that the locals will always want to have a 'pop' at the England fans?

Anyone on here that has followed England abroad will know that the media are always keen to create a story. I was in Rome in 1997 for the World Cup play off game and Lens in 1998 for the World Cup game against Colombia. The disturbing thing at both matches was that you had journalists from the UK offering money to people to start throwing bottles and cause trouble. This practise still happens.

The planned clash between Russian and English yobs was all over the papers weeks ago.......................

Most of the idiots from the UK from the last Euro's who were banned from travelling, well those bans have now expired.

I heard that unlike German police for the World Cup in 2006, French police refused to take advice on how to police a major football tournament

Its getting to the point when you think is it really worth all the bother putting on a big football tournament just for all the diffent countries knobheads to turn up and basically riot.....why should police put their lives at risk over a fking game of football

Football certainly attracts the dregs of societies

Basically it ended up in Marseille through bad luck, venues were already laid out and tickets sold before the draw. Pretty silly really to not have a week cooling off period after the draw to look at potential issues, same happened when they put us in Charleroi in 2000 - silly venue for the best supported nation in it. This time the stadium was fine but the history was there to suggest issues. I've never lived in France but know that Paris and Marseille are rough places, been plenty of bother on the Club front at football.

When you go away with England you always risk being attacked by locals etc. Went on a stag do two year ago to Lisbon and went to watch Sporting v Porto, 30 of us sat outside a bar right outside the stadium and loads of lads started milling around us - nothing happened but all it needed was someone to do something and it would have gone bananas. It's situations like that which make me far happier going matches either alone or just in very small groups abroad - always potential for something to happen when drink, lads and football are around. It's not good but it's just the way of the world. It's amazing how some English lads act when abroad, even basic manners go out the window - these scenes have been terrible but for some they will have been asking for it I am afraid.

Some very poor planning gone into the host venues for this. England in Marseille was a mistake after what happened there in 98. Then to have us playing a British rival in a town barely bigger than Kendal for the second game when both countries could have 20 odd thousand fans there is incompetency of the highest order in my mind.

No reason why the draw couldn't be made first then allocated venues afterwards. They had the right idea for Italia 90, stick us on an island and have every game there.
