Fair run in the team

Five games he started on the spin and thats been his longest run of games. Yes in those five he never showed much promise but did anyone at all show any promise in the opening games of the season. You cant deny he has showed flashes of what he can do, and im not just talking about goalscoring because even i cant defend his goal record but i still believe given a good run and better service he would of scored a lot more

Well the simple fact of the matter is he was crap in the first 5 games, got injured and came back unfit and fat, didn't win his place back and got even more unfit, I can only imagine his effort in training to not be up to the managers standard and was only turned to out of desperation, were on he played one good game v Plymouth if I remember rightly.

But at a reputed 2k a week you would still have him floating about the club ?

A huge disappointment in his time here. Could still prove useful at this level (probably whilst playing against us) but his best days are behind him.

I think Tanning has a point. We were garbage most of the season, no supply to the front line worth mentioning. We would have been slating Messi if he was up front for us. You can't blame the front line. No I'm not comparing Paynter with Messi.

Perspective needed. With a midfield capable of doing their job he would score. But that is something I didn't see until the last game.

If he was on a low wage then maybe he'd be worth keeping to see if he would score with better supply, but we cannot risk having him clogging the wage budget up again, when we can sign probably 2 decent players with that money.

You also have to remember charlie wyke scored 4 in his first 3 starts playing with the same shite that Paynter was.

It's definitely the right decision to move Paynter on, for all concerned.

Agreed crunch take away that one good season for Swindon in 09/10 and his record is nothing to write home about. I remember the the excitement of the average punter when he arrived and couldn't for the life of me understand it. The fact is him and Curle don't see eye to eye so it isn't going to happen for him here and we sure could use them wages. Having said that he will be a good bet to score against us this coming season.

To be fair if we defend like we did last season Richard Tracey and Jason prinns would be a good bet to score against us

I struggle to understand why he didn't do well with our forward attacking and great wing play ???
I think if a team plays to his strengths he's got plenty to offer especially at our level !!

Well Ronnie More was foolish enough to get caught breaking the FA betting rules 95 times and lost his 130k job over it. Not to mention two of his players being arrested over match fixing allegations. But Billy was not going to be used here as Keith would have at best of used him as back up only dropping him again asap so it's a good move for him at the least. All this we have put it behind us and moved on malarkey was purely a front for the club to project the idea of a harmonious dressing room.

Paynter is a one season wonder who is an idle fat couldn't give a chuff scouser. Really frustrating, because he is also talented.
For those who say he did not have a run, I had the joy of watching him for many a game at Leeds and he was as idle then as he has been for Carlisle. It was an I was there moment when he finally scored in February.
Think Paynter is like the wild child bird people think they will tame.
Paynter saw Carlisle as easy money, same as he did with Leeds (and Doncaster, Sheff Wed, etc)

There was history between KC and Paynter that ensured that it was never gonna work good luck to him just hope it doesn't backfire on us.

I thought he showed that there is a decent player in there somewhere towards the end of the season. Against York and Plymouth he showed that he was a much better option for holding the ball up and linking play than either Wyke or Rigg, both of which I thought were poor in the last couple of months. Clearly there was a clash with the manager and our playing "style" didn't really suit him. Doing shuttle runs across the pitch trying to close defenders down or trying to win a flick on from a 70 yard punt into orbit isn't going to get the best out of him... it will suit Ibehre much more. From what I understand he was nowhere near as bad an influence on the dressing room as many are claiming on here, he was actually very popular with his team mates, many of whom couldn't understand why he never got a chance in the team. His big issue was that he dared to question Curle's methods, as did Dicker, Caig etc.

Having said that he didn't look fit at the start of the season and had been chatting to mates in the Liverpool area about getting one last pay day up at Carlisle... that certainly doesn't suggest his heart was in it. I guess we will get our proof this season with the Monkey Hnagers, playing for a manager who will probably play to his strengths. If he still makes no impact then he really is sh1te. Time will tell.

I agree with Northumbrian, there is a decent player in there somewhere, but we only ever saw fleeting glimpses. If a footballer is not fit at the start of the season, and he wasn't, it is going to be a struggle. Especially if he isn't putting in the work.

He could never challenge Ibehre as that type of player, he has nothing like the pace of Asamoah, and Wyke and Rigg have youth on their side, and will be better than last year. I think we're better off without him, and our attacking options look a bit more balanced now he's gone.

I wouldn't be surprised if we're paying part of his wages for the next year.

When Curle first got the job he said how he'd tried to sign Paynter for Notts County, but Paynter turned them down.

People seem to have taken this as meaning there is an issue between them for some reason.

It's time Paynter moved on, for whatever reason, there's probably several, it hasn't worked out for him here. Curle doesn't want him he's on a lot of money and there's no point worrying over why now. If we're paying some of his wage then he certainly shouldn't be allowed to play against us.

It will be interesting to see how he copes next year at pool - especially with his long commute. I'm assuming he was the player that got relocation money and didn't move last year? Hartlepool is further away after all and the distance must have been an issue in his motivation, whilst he was with us. Wish him well, other than against us and think it''s a good move. I'd certainly rather have Jabo in, I couldn't see Curle and Paynter sorting it out. Hopefully Dicker will stay now and bomb on for us still think he could be a cracking player, fingers crossed!

Paynter in 2014/15 - 18 league games, 1 goal
1 goal in 40 games in 2 years.
30, slow, overweight, dissenter and rightly fined, injury prone, massive wage drain, can't be arsed to move to the area.

Paynter is in a class with Bagshaw, Hindmarch, Prins, Gates, Livingstone etc etc. Awful player, awful attitude.
Still some people want him in the team, blame Curle, think there's a player there....I'd rather have Harries or Tracey up top.
We have 4 far better strikers at the club now. Well done Keith for getting shot of this waster!

Stats don't always give the full picture... going on stats the signing of a 32 year old striker who is yet to score 100 goals looks a terrible signing. But sometimes it's more about the strikers role in the team, holding the ball up, linking play, making space for others to profit. There is no doubt the Billy Paynter from the first half of the season was appalling... but the Billy Paynter against Plymouth and York looked a very good player... that is why some are saying there is a player in there somewhere. I still think it is the correct decision to get rid of him ... but it wouldn't surprise me if he scores a few next season for Pools.... if he turns up with the right attitude.... to be honest that is only 50/50 though.

Curle has made it clear the new lad is not going to be a 30 goal a year player, his job is to hold the ball up and cause trouble so others will score, presumably Rigg and Wyke
