In no particular order:

John Halpin - class player, without injuries a top flight career easily. Streets ahead of Beagrie and the like
Darren Edmondson. Cared. A lot. Terrific defender, and some memorable goals - last min v darlo, 2 v Burnley, Roker...
Dean Walling - put his body on the line, and greatly improved from his debut. Lovely fella to boot
Simon Davey - not as good as others we've had in midfield, like Hayward, Conway, Clayton, Osman or more, but worked very very hard and a proper leader.
Chris Lumsdon - from free transfer to 2 (nearly 3) promotions, and a good passer, he had great spirit and never ever hid, even when having a shocker!

Gutted when all the above left. Loved loads more - Mountfield, Thomas, Jansen, Bridges, Big Kev, Murph....but the 5 above made me proud to support CUFC. Feel lucky to have seen them pull on the shirt. Cheers.

Did Gallimore ever miss a penalty? Brilliant from dead balls that bloke.

So comfortable on the ball as well. He'd feint a clearance, drop his shoulder and cut inside the winger closing him down pretty much every game... never saw it fail!

Beardsley, simply the best.
Balderstone, the classiest
Bowles, the best I've seen after Peter B
Hughie Mac, my Dad said he was the best! He was always right about footie.
Bridges, the best in recent times.

Bridges - Poetry in motion to watch
Billy - Sometimes comical, but had so much drive and energy, and plenty of crunching (but also well timed) tackles.
Gray - Everything that a captain should be, and more. Arguably the best leader we have ever had?
Dempsey - Looked every inch the "local lad playing for his local team and proud of it." Was chuffed to see him get the captains armband a few times last year. Something we all dreamed of as kids, and I am sure he dreamt of it too.
Keogh - Great defender and wore his heart on his sleeve.

1970s Joe Laidlaw, the type of player Wayne Rooney wishes he was
1980s Nigel Saddington, great captain drove the team forward
1990s Simon Davey, great captain and goalscorer
2000s Joe Garner, the night he destroyed Wes Morgan was the best centre forward performance I've seen at BP
2000s Keiren Westwood,best keeper I've seen worth 20 pts a season
This list could change the more I think about it

1. Allan Ross - should have played for Scotland and a lovely guy
2. Peter Beardsley - he did it everywhere but he learned everything he knew in the afternoon practising while waiting for his wife at Carlsle
3. Chris Balderstone - the best passer of the ball ever seen (including Glen Hoddle)
4. Matt Jansen - A scooter accident in Rome stopped him getting the career he deserved and being the best player ever to have played for Carlisle .
5 Hugh Mcilmoyle - A 5'10' centre forward managed to "hang in the air" and head past 1st Divison centre halfs. Also 49 goals in one season.

In the last 20 years there has been others but not a patch on these guys and quite a few of their team mates.

Ok favourites rather than "best" although some.might be on both lists.

John Halpin - he was my idol. Quick and tricky left winger.

Rod Thomas - everything a winger should be amd could put defenders on their arses. End.product tailed.off but was exciting to watch in his good days.

Tony Gallimore - cultured left back who liked a session in legends!

Simon Hackney - when he burst on to the scene as part of that front three he was unplayable. His screamer against Leeds sticks in my mind. Seemed a genuinely nice guy bullied out of the club.

Jabo Ibehre - The epitome of the resurgence this season. A blues legend already. It's a long long time since I started singing a players name while doing the housework!

If I did this tomorrow I'd probably have different players but there you go.

Nigel saddington. My all time favourite scored a last minute winner at McCain stadium in my second ever away match on my 15th birthday.
Andy preece. Was brilliant along with Kevin grey who also makes my top 5.
Michael bridges. I couldn't believe it when we signed him as I was already a fan of his from his top flight days.
Andy Watson was a favourite of mine, I remember him playing for Halifax against us and being impressed and then we signed him a few months later. Not very often we pinch top players from other clubs at our own level.

A really hard choice to narrow it down to 5 and at least another 20 could have been chosen easily.

I'm surprised that only 3 of us have selected big Keith Walwyn. Absolute legend when he played for us and the crowd absolutely loved him. There's no way I'd say he's one of the best but maybe I'm biased as his time coincided with me really getting into the blues.

1. Kev the legend Grey- a strong man for harsh times!
2. John Halpin a touch of class, a player that i believed in and who once on the ball brought excitment and flare to many a Saturday or Tuesday night, a man who suffered in an era in which you 'stayed on your feet but were virtually assaulted and killed week in week out if you were a tricky winger and an era in which pitches were shite. He reminded me of Davie Cooper.
3. Dave McKeller- We're had so many good keepers but Dave was a class act with all the attributes of many of the others.
4. DEANO! Dean Walling a player who came as a striker but developed and gave his all! a class player and a class man!
5. Chris Lumsden, i always said the Glen Hoddle of a special team,

HONOURABLE MENTIONS- Nigel Saddington, Brent Hetherington, Mike Galloway, Tom Taiwo, Paul Proudlock, Big Keith Walwyn Tony Caig, Stephane Pounawatchy, Andy preece, David Reeves, Darren Edmonson
Last Edit: 29 Dec 2025 17:47 by Mr Quint. Reason: David reeves never gave up!!

Honerable mention for Mally Poskett.

In my opinion Pounewatchy was a liability who ambled around flogging goals left right and centre. I appreciate this is not the modal view.
