He never really had an impact on me, I was more into heavy metal. A couple of good songs but as has been said an individual who was totally different to anything else around in sound and style. I probably haven't heard his best stuff just the obvious mainstream stuff like life on Mars, star man, space oddity let's dance and Jean genie. Oh mustn't forget the video to China girl.

I'm of an age where he should have influenced me massively, according to everything that's going on in the media at the moment. He didn't though, not at all. Granted he did some decent stuff, and there are a few songs which stand out, but from a music viewpoint he wasn't anything particularly startling for me. I think his challenging of boundaries visually and through what he said were far more important than any of his musical output.

The outpouring of grief when something like this happens these days is beyond a joke though. I find myself sitting watching the news and seeing grown ups standing around outside places some "superstar" has once visited, and crying their eyes out, saying how much they're going to miss him/her. I'm sure some people feel some genuine sorrow for the passing of somebody iconic, but surely not to the extent that they'd stand in the streets whinging about it. They need to grow up and get a fucking grip.

Bought all his early singles and albums , thought his 70s stuff was exceptional and for me was the best music he produced. To reinvent himself and produce different styles of music is the sign of a true great artist , can't think of many if any other artist that have been so diverse and lasted the test of time.

Sorry, but for me Kate Bush has been more original, inventive and unique for the whole of her career, not just a few decent albums 40 years ago.

Or don't women count?

The only time I've really been upset about a celebrity was when Rod Hull fell off that roof. If he hadn't taken that bloody emu with him he'd still be here today.

A lot of the younger generation who would have not known much about him will have related to his quality tunes through Gene Hunt and the Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes tv series.

I call it competitive grieving. "I was a bigger fan than you", "they meant more to me than they did to you".

Maybe I'm wrong and celebrities actually do mean more to people than their friends and family?

I think Ollie Murs could surpass them both.

Read up a bit about him last week after watching Deutschland 83 and some of his stuff being on the soundtrack, never knew about Heroes being related to the Berlin Wall - thought I should try and listen to more of his stuff really.

Had another read last night and some stuff coming up was eye opening, even though I always regarded him as a bit of an oddball without knowing much about him etc... Read about a rape/underage sex claim that was kicked out against him related to a famous female yank groupie (feminists were really socking it to him hours after his death like on certain blogs) and that he was bisexual etc... The key quote I read about him that stands out was that he "went out to shock".

I like Kate Bush but I think you're doing Bowie a bit of a disservice. Heathen, Reality and Next Day - all released this century were pretty original and contemporary sounding. Between 1970 and 1980 he released 11 albums or original material, each one a progression from the previous. Kate Bush has managed 12 studio albums in her entire career.

The "don't women count' comment was utterly unnecessary, implying that I have some sort of gender bias . I don't ,but I just don't think Kate Bush's body of work - impressive though it is - stands up to Bowie's.

They could play Ziggy Aranaldust or John Nixon, I'm Only Dancing over the PA. That'd be great.
