Andrew,

If any of your millions of pounds is invested in oil I'd sell mate, pronto. I've heard bad things about the price of the old Texas Tea down the club.

The price of oil has dropped but the excise duty hasn't.
Obviously, however, there will be a drop in the VAT take.

Being a contrarian,I'm actually buying oil stocks which are asset rich but have limited exposure to heavy production costs and therefore horrendous cashflow issues I like Cairn Energy and Ophir.

The wolves are circling over a number of oil related companies which have too much debt-I think Amec have serious issues for example after their terribly timed purchase of Foster Wheeler.

The whole sector has been trashed in an indiscriminate way but the world,or at least certain parts of it,cannot afford cheap oil and the geopolitical risk is therefore very high eg Venezuela,Saudi Arabia. In truth, many economies need expensive, not cheap oil.

It's sub $30 just now but I reckon there will be a bounce short term but don't rely on my view please.

Andrew

First you try and invest in Carlisle United and now oil. You got some kind of Brewster's millions deal going on?!

No but I do think both Carlisle and oil are good long term bets

Cairn and Ophir both at about a 5 year low, could still go lower unless there's a change in market sentiment towards the oilers

That's the gamble-the whole sector is friendless but it's the production dependant companies that will be hurting. Those with assets can afford to sit and wait for the upturn.

The stockmarket's become more and more of a gamble in recent years, controlled to a huge extent by the market makers and their dubious tactics especially where AIM companies are concerned with it being so loosly policed by the financial authorities. Good luck with Cairn and Ophir, will keep an eye on them.

Laffy - I don't normally do this "investment thing" but tonight I put £50 of fuel in my Datsun. Do you think I should have waited? Am I likely to get a return on my investment? I would take £60 now for the fuel and the car if anyone is willing to take a punt?

Can't see it getting much cheaper-I would be stock piling it if I had a tanker! I thought Datsuns were off the road years ago

Problem is most oil and gas exploration is 100% bank funded so a crash in oil will bring a run on some banks and that will hit all sectors until the effect of cheap oil washes through. Iran is selling reserves but won't have full production up for 2 years. 40% of 2015 US oil related bankruptcies were in December. Volatility averages are 8 times up on one year ago. Keep your money in a sock under the bed!

Prepare for mass consolidation in the oil sector Ibogaine, driven by banks turning the heat on highly borrowed positions. In reality, the whole sector had grown fat and lazy so a weeding out is long overdue in my view.A spike last yesterday gives the banks the opportunity to give their borrowers a quiet nudge down that road.

Thanks For the advice Andrew.

My current investment capital is tied up in an each way Yankee. But if I get a few winners at Haydock today and my position changes perhaps we can look to build a portfolio together?

One of the pleasures in life is the banter on this forum!

I doubt you would want to invest with me-what with my 'dubious' business practices and lack of a pot.

Good luck at Haydock-you'll need it!

Correct though I am still allowed in the stand! To be fair, taking three under 11s without any payment for them is a great initiative.

Re Bill Wilson,I have heard his name a few times though no idea whether there is any truth in it.He will have to climb over the Trust if he has aspirations-that will be a good barometer of his credentials.I am certain he isn't a billionaire though.
