Not sure what to make of this really

CARLISLE chief Andrew Jenkins has blasted the Premier League clubs who ignored his plea for help.

The League Two side’s Brunton Park ground was wrecked in the floods which hit the Cumbrian city last month.

And Sunday’s FA Cup clash with Everton is only their second match back on home soil following a costly clean-up operation.

But Jenkins has revealed how, when he recently requested auction prizes for a flood fundraiser, the Toffees were one of only TWO top-flight sides to respond.

The Carlisle chairman, 79, told SunSport: “My son held a dinner for the Cumbria Flood Recovery Appeal. We made about £4,000 on an auction and about £14,000 altogether.

“I had written to a few clubs. The big London ones, large clubs in the North West, some much closer to home here, and even north of the border.

“Sunderland sent three items, one of which was four tickets to their game with Man City. Everton sent some memorabilia to be auctioned and Rangers sent us something.

“But that was it. I was disappointed with some of the big clubs. They couldn’t even send a shirt or something like that.”

In contrast, Jenkins revealed how recent opponents, non-league Welling, who they played in the FA Cup, and League Two counterparts Oxford, held whip-rounds to raise money for the flood fund.

The bill to repair Brunton Park is expected to be around £3million.

Jenkins estimates Sunday’s TV clash could bank them up to £300,000 — the difference between losing or making money this term.

But he is furious they have to rely on such cash to break even, given the riches higher up the league ladder.

Jenkins admitted: “I haven’t got much time for the Premier League at all.

“The money going into it is disgusting and the TV money coming in next year will make it even worse. They could be more generous to the smaller clubs.”

At least this weekend’s visitors Everton, in Jenkins’ eyes, are among the good guys — but they will have to rough it on Sunday.

He explained: “After the flood, they found asbestos in the away shower room.

“So we’ve got some showers and toilets outside — and that is where they will be washing on Sunday!”

how about letting people who know how to run a football club, run the football club.

So he's wanting PL clubs to help cover Carlisle United's losses. Losses caused by his and Nixons complete ineptitude in running a football club. A bit bizarre to say the least!

Read it again Nobby, that's not what he's saying. The money was for Cumbria flood and their official charities, not CUFC.

The clubs who were asked obviously must have known about our billionaire benefactor and that we'd therefore not need any financial help.

This suggests he's on about more than a few raffle prizes.

I think general consensus at that time was to not disturb it and leave it where it was.

This is going to be discussed on TalkSport soon. now it might be a 'trashy programme' but is there anyone sensible willing to ring up?

Given that it was stated that 4,200 was our break even figure for the last 5 seasons I dont think he can blame it on anyone other than himself. This is confirmation that the 'billionaire' does not exist! Why be so pissed off with the premier league clubs mere 200 million not making a donation! He needs to come clean about this now!

Someone shut the old muppet up
Yes the Premiership is filthy rich and don't care for anyone else but then we were trying to charge poor penrith £500 for a friendly, didn't we dodge giving Workington money for adam Collin with some loophole.

As for donating stuff I am sure most clubs get 100s of requests from causes as good or better than the flood appeal on a daily basis, they cant reply to them all.

Don't want to sound like I am defending the super rich premiership clubs but Jenkins isn't gonna get many favours when it comes to loans etc now

Well, he's got a point. For weeks and weeks I've seen stuff on Football Focus and other cack, and been hearing on the radio how the entire "football family" is coming together to help the victims of the floods in Carlisle. If what Jenkins says is true then that's a huge load of old bollocks. There has been practical and financial help from clubs outside the Premier League, and reports of Newcastle at least willing to consider something, but nothing much from any of the bigger clubs. This is a bit of confirmation about how much money matters at that level.

Jenkins wasn't really asking for much, was he? Some sort of raffle prize or something, and he wasn't asking for it for himself, or the club. He was looking to do something for the people who have been so horribly affected, and I believe he had every right to go to those big clubs and expect some sort of gesture. A signed shirt? A VIP day for 2? Something which would cost those clubs nowt, but would be a great prize, or item to bid on at auction.

If you ask me it is the Premier League clubs showing their true colours, and Jenkins is right to berate them.

Glad somone has said it actually, wont make sod all difference, and may piss NUFC or MUFC when they come to loan us the next Gillead or Lawrence - but he's right here.

Money in top flight football IS disgusting

He has a point, its poor that these clubs couldn't be bothered to send a few prizes that would of cost them nothing and taken up hardly any time to organise.

Beyond the flood appeal, he drifts into general moaning about money in PL football. Its a bit rich taking £300k from the TV rights for the FA cup game and them moaning about PL clubs being so rich due to.....TV rights. Are we going to give some of that £300k to non league teams to help them out?

The other thing he doesn't mention is that we shouldn't have to rely on the £300k to break even if he and Nixon did a better job of running the place. You can criticise distribution of PL TV rights money, but using it as an excuse for why we lose hundreds of thousands every year, is exactly that, an excuse.

He's just feeling a tad bitter about money at the minute because the floods mean that he won't be able to pocket any money from selling Brunton Park to a housing developer.

Judging by the way that he runs our club like his own private feifdom, I'm not surprised that he doesn't get what he wants when he has to go talking to other clubs and he has to grovel a tad.

The man's simply not used to it!

Sooner him and his cronies hand the club over to others more suited to running a proper business the better.

In all fairness I don't think he asked the prem clubs to put some money in our coffers to help us break even but you certainly see charity sellers parked at the end of Tesco/Asda/Morrisons tills with their bag packing helpers, similar scenario maybe ?

£500 that wasn't accepted in the end.

On the stuff requested for the auction, shouldn't he have been thanking the clubs that did send something, not having a pop at those who didn't. Sounds like this had nothing to do with the club so they didn't even snub CUFC.

Maybe the green pen used for the letters, and the spelling mistakes and standard of the letter meant they got scopped straight in the bins.
Or insuffient stamps meant clubs needed to pay difference and decided sod that.

Okay then, I don't see a sky tv of the supermarket world going round Asda/Tesco's and giving them a huge pile of cash to help them prop up there business while going round to Mr local newsagent and dropping a cash bag of copper on the table and saying fair enough for you shopkeeper.

Now I am not in for defending them as anybody who has read the site but there are times and places for such things and tbh this one isn't one of them, what he said isn't really very wrong, maybe he would have been best keeping his gob shut as it will only fall on deaf ears and possibly go against us for loans.

Still he wasn't asking for the "big" clubs to bung us cash, a better deal for little clubs from the cash masters yes.

The "THEY could be more generous" is ambiguous but I would say it is the people that dish out the cash ie BT/Sky etc as he does mention TV money in the previous sentence.

Once and for all do you seriously believe any housing developer would be interested in building on BP after the latest deluge. Get real...........same as Lidl have put on hold plans to build a new store on that land opposite Victoria Road that is still standing in water.

I was speaking to the land director of Lidl in Newton Aycliffe last week and he mentioned their planning application next to Carlisle. He told me the Council have embargoed any consents in the area until the flooding issues are properly evaluated and sorted-quite sensible and likely to kill off development of any kind in the flood plain for a long while.

Michael Knighton did once show me his plans to flood the area behind BP and create a water leisure park!He struggled to raise finance but he obviously saw the issues with any development in the area

Some of the prem clubs will get hundreds of requests a day for raffle prizes for various different things, hence why some of them have a clear policy that they only donate to their chosen charities.

I'd imagine we will have got stuff off of Sunderland because of our link with Phil King, and Everton because we are playing them soon.

But i think it shows poorly on Jenkins, giving to charity is a choice each person/business can make for itself, They shouldn't be guilt tripped into it, as so,some else said, it would've been better to use the coverage to thank those who had donated, rather than bitch at those who haven't.

I'm absolutely positive that this will of been part of a much larger interview and that the Sun will have been a little bit, ermm, "selective".

None the less, AJ doesn't do himself any favours and doesn't have the smarts to deal with people like at the Sun - [censored] knows why he did the interview in the first place.

Thanks to this, we've gone from his son having a raffle and him lambasting Premier League clubs for not supporting the raffle, all the way to CUFC "begging" PL clubs to help with the £3m we need for repairs.

Never mind the fact that £3m is the estimated total cost, all covered (bar £250 excess) by insurance.

Between AJ and the Sun - they haven't done much for CUFC.
