Curle. Abbott got away with the smaller budget excuse for way too long. Too many loan signing that never played.

Abbott: Constantly talked the club down, used location as an excuse for not signing players when in reality they probably just thought we were tinpot because of how he sold the club to them, awful awful awful football, regular tankings at home, pig headed, always picked the same players no matter how badly they played.

Curle: talks the club up, can attract players from anywhere, good eye for players, can get the best out players, decent football, doesn't take any sh*t but this can lead to him falling out with players irreparably, has brought a much needed professional feel the the playing side

Didn't Abbott have the biggest wage budget in Carlisle United's history to work with?

I thought he was a terrible manager. He signed player after player after player without having a clue what he was doing. The odd season he got lucky and found himself with a decent bunch of players (2011-12 for example), but sure enough each time that happened he managed to f*** it up and ruin the decent team by replacing them with truly woeful footballers the following summer. He managed to put together the worst Carlisle United team I've ever seen at the start of that season when he got sacked. The 4 and 5 goal drubbings were flattering to us, the Coventry one could and should have been about 10. The football on the whole under Abbott's reign was dull as dishwater.

How could he not spot the potential of the likes of Madden and Wells when he saw them in training every day? Likewise Madine for a bit, he put him on the loan list! It was only when a championship side took him did clueless Abbott realise that there may actually be a player there. He brought Potts in as a right back, I don't think he played midfield until Abbott left. Thank f*** we didn't let him loose on Kyle Dempsey, he'd probably be playing left back for Workington by now!

So yeah, Curle.

Spot on. Curle/Dykes/West have pissed all over Abbott's 5 years of excuses of location for not being able to attract players.

He went stale with the club. New input and tactics was needed. First couple of years he was fantastic, last couple was awful

I wouldn't judge a manager too much on how he bigs us up or talks us down to the media. So what if he came across as a bit of an ar5ehole at times!? We had some great times under Abbott. Poor management/investment OFF the pitch (custodians plodding the club along) is what caught up with Greg in the end. Some folk have short memories...

Having said that, the c_nt did release Rory Loy to sign Lewis f*cking Guy... :S

Keef curly wurly for me. He took over Kavs dross consolidated/kept us in the league and then improved us. Abbott got lucky afew times rather than having managed the job well, overall the progress he made was backwards ultimately, hence the mallett.

We had a painfully slow decline under Abbott. We relied on loanees to give us a bit of extra quality to keep our heads above water.
He obviously must have done some things right, as we avoided relegation numerous times, but contrary to some people, I didn't see that as a fantastic achievement.
Curle is trying to build a team and knows where we need to be better, he has done this by trying different formations, giving players a chance and keeping competition for places high.
Sometimes the football is rather direct and no frills, but to be honest, compared to the tedious, monotonous way we played under Abbott, I would rather watch the present team.

Talking the club up/down was just a minor point in each last Mashie! It does have a bearing on the type of players we attract though. Would you rather come to a club where the manager has a "we're naturally not very good regardless, we're probably punching above our weight, we'll always just be a good as Rochdale" or a club where the manager takes pretty much the polar opposite attitude?

Didn't Abbott sign a record number of players?

Not sure how many potential signings ever tuned in to Abbott's post match interviews, or read the News & Star...

Where are Bury & Rochdale now? Probably not far wrong, IF indeed he did say that.

Point is that it was his opinion of the club and it would carry over to how he spoke to potential signings.

Aye they might be the league above us now but that's thanks to the three rivets, Abbott and Kavanagh bringing the club to its knees!

Anyways, promotion this season B) then we'll see how Curle fairs with us in League One!

Not sure you can compare them or that one is stand out over another. Abbott inherited a good squad and kept us in L1 for several seasons? 2 Cup Final appearances. Turned round John ward's mess. Curle took over a bunch of dross and has done a good clearing out job but has only now got us into L2 mid table. Think end of next season we can make a better judgement

I can't even believe this is a serious question. The Clown must be the first Manager in History to bumble his way into winning a trophy.

I've been trying for years to forget about all those horrific displays especially in his last 18-months. That Coventry match was as embarrassing as it gets.

The team he put out in that match was a disgrace. He should have been sacked as soon as he handed in that team sheet.

Any time I think a match is bad, I always look back to that Coventry game for some perspective. It was the worst performance I've ever seen, honestly 4-0 flattered us, it should have been 10-0 given all the clear cut chances they didn't take.

Some mid-table finishes under Abbot in League One, almost got us to the play offs once. His last full season was horrendous though.

2012/2013 finished in 17th with 77 goals conceded. The most in the league.

Lost at home by three goals or more a total of four times. Conceded three goals or more at home a total of EIGHT times. The football was absolutely awful, really really soul destroying stuff. Can't remember how many times I left early. Not talking 5 minutes early either, I'm talking 20 minutes early on a regular basis.

The first three matches of the season that he finally got the sack:

Carlisle United 1-5 Leyton Orient
Bradford City 4-0 Carlisle United
Carlisle United 0-4 Coventry City

Not sure what you're getting at there. Mid-table, six points behind the last play-off spot with five games in hand. Less games in hand on some of the other teams around us but still a decent amount.

What if we finish in the play offs this season? Would you still want to wait until the following season to make a judgement just in case he finishes lower?

Poor arguments here lads, keep them coming B)

And Notts County finished above us, managed by guess who.... Keith Curle.

That season was Abbott's best season and best team. Unfortunately Abbott completely ruined it by signing a load of shit for the next 2 seasons, losing/letting go players like McGovern, Zoko, Madden, Loy, Taiwo, Simek and replacing them with utter shit, or not replacing them at all in some cases.

Yes I think that's a fair assessment, Abbott had a lot of faults but you cant blame him for us getting relegated. Curle (in my opinion) has done just OK, we are in a better position, but the football of late has been absolutely abysmal, I really think he should be doing better. Sticking with a consistent starting 11 (where possible) would be a good start, and finding a formation that suits would be even better, then sticking with it!!!

With Abbott getting 2 points from the first six games and not signing any decent defenders I think Greg has to take a little bit of the blame for relegation! :cheer:

Oh I can, and I am.

Despite having the worst defence in the league the previous season, how many defenders did Abbott sign that summer? None, despite releasing Murphy and Simek. We started the season with Mike f**king Edwards as our centre back despite him being utterly atrocious the previous season, he even had to play Thirlwell there in the second game once we'd been stuffed 5 by Orient. Oh and Potts as our only right back after releasing Simek...

You only need look at our lineups and results from our games under Abbott at the start of that season to realise how much to blame Abbott was for the relegation. Yeah Kavanagh continued it and played a part in the relegation as well, but Abbott started it by putting together the worst Carlisle United side I've ever seen, we wouldn't have got to 20 points if we'd kept that f***wit in charge.

His work that summer was inexcusable and so costly, he'd totally lost the plot and I doubt he'll ever manage in the football league again after that.

So I take it you didn't rate him!

Oh I can, and I am.

Despite having the worst defence in the league the previous season, how many defenders did Abbott sign that summer? None, despite releasing Murphy and Simek. Abbott was in the last two for the York job apparently when McNamara got it.

Were they looking for a surefire cert to be relegated back to the Conference?

I cannot believe that someone would believe he had nothing to do with our relegation that year.

That has to be in the Top 10 moments in the history of Carlisle United F.C.
There's only one United!

Why is it presumed that those players going and shit coming in was all Abbott's fault? Anyone with half a brain can see that his budget was massively cut in the summer of 2012 - he then had to take some punts (Bugno and Cadermarteri) and it didn't work out. With hindsight, he should have gone in the summer 2013 with a bit more of his reputation in tact.

Curle has done okay this season but the two good cup runs paper over what's been a fairly average league season with a decent budget - have we actually "battered" anyone in the league yet? I can accept that but let's not get over excited just yet.
