I think its a belting pub, that deserves to be heaving on match day. Unfortunately it is not passed on matchday when en-route from the city centre. They serve about 8 beers on tap, all Sam Smiths of course, including 3 lagers and a cider. I tend to have the "Indian Ale" in a bottle as the bitters are more in-line with John Smiths and I like hops in my pint. I think its about £1.80 a pint.

I've been in a few Sam Smith's pubs on our Away travels and I just can't get away with their beer, summat about it not to my taste. I'll second the pork scratchings and crisps. I'll try the Indian Ale in a bottle next time now you've mentioned it GB.

They have the full range of bottles. The Indian ale is ok 5%, got a bit of hop bitterness to it - unlike everything else they do labelled "bitter". Although some of the lagers I do like...The Organic 5% one tastes more like a foreign lager and the Taddy Lager is pleasant too..

Didn't have you down as a Sam Smiths man, Mush. There's a Sam Smiths house at the end of our road. £1.83 pint of hand pull. 5 or 6 pints and you know you've had it like... :S

Can they keep the doylems out?

Didn't go back in after being confronted by some local vermin about being an opposition fan. This was years ago mind.

Shame as I walk past it most home games.

I’ve gone to the Magpie after the Saturday matches since it re-opened, and I don’t live in the area. It has a “real pub” feel and there’s very few of those in Carlisle. The previous owners spent a lot of money on the place and it was sympathetically re-developed. And it has a big log fire which I love.

With Sam Smith’s (which I like) at £1.82 and a couple who are trying to make a go of it I think it’s worth a visit before or after the game

I think it's a bit forward expecting a handpull off the landlord the first time you've met him. People expect so much for £1.83 these days!
