:) This fight was brutal and a credit to both fighters, Think it should have been stopped a couple of rounds sooner, Reminded me of the Hagler Hitman Hearns era, Mind I'm not saying these guys would survive with these guys but they gave eveything......

Blackwell's in hospital in a induced coma due to bleeding on his brain. Let's hope he makes a full recovery.

Was some swelling above his left eye when the Dr stopped the fight...

This is why I don't watch professional boxing any more. Ban it.

Im sorry Griff but that is absolute bollocks imo. Do you really think the millions of boxers world wide will just say fair enough and do something else instead?

No, it would just go underground but there would be less of it. I know I'm probably out on a limb but it's legalised violence, allowing something to happen that you'd get locked up for if you did it anywhere else. I also hope the guy makes a full recovery, then I hope that the "sport" pays for his treatment and recuperation, not the NHS.

If there's to be boxing, keep it amateur. Three rounds, better regulated and better protection for the boxers.

You can't question Nick Blackwell's bravery and determination. I've never seen a fighter before take so many head punches particularly upper cuts and still keep hanging in there. They knew there was a serious problem afterwards as the tv cameras went home while he was attended to by the medics.

Now we know much more about the brain injuries caused by repeated blows to the head perhaps fights should be stopped much sooner. This fight was stopped only because the swelling over his eye meant he couldn't see out of it not because of concerns for his health. This is despite Blackwell losing every round apart from the first in my opinion.

I dind't watch (obviously) but I know how it goes. It's professional, people have paid good money to watch it and it's on the telly, so there's pressure on everyone to let it go "just one more round". Then another. Then another.

He was stretchered out of the ring on oxygen - some saying he gave a thumbs up on the way out.

A member of his family supposedly posted it was bleeding on the skull, not the brain. Not sure what this means for him exactly.

Induced comas not that uncommon for sports head trauma these days - plenty come out OK so hope that's the case here.

Except last night there was no suggestion of ever stopping the fight on health grounds. Blackwell was still strong enough to land a knock-out punch on Eubank and claim victory despite the internal injuries he must have been suffering. I think it probably is time to step up the ringside medical monitoring so that fighters can't be allowed to take as much punishment as Blackwell did. It will mean stopping fights where fighters still might have won but we shouldn't be allowing the sport to risk death or permanent disability.

I'm praying Nick Blackwell makes a full recovery and gives himself a break from the ring for his own sake.

:( I've seen fights stopped when a fighter as took far far less punishment than Blackwell took, The guy was to brave for his own good, Even Eubank senior was banging on the apron of the ring to have the fight stopped a couple of rounds earlier, He will remember well what happened to Michael Watson.......

Says it all for me. A boxer who has taken a few too many punches is unable to make the right decisions. So he fought on because it's what he's trained to do, and because a "sport" which is about making money is more interested in pandering to the baying public, and to TV ratings, some poor sod might have to be spoon-fed for the rest of his life. I sincerely hope not, but something has to be done because IT KEEPS ON HAPPENING. It should go the way of fox-hunting.

I think there's more people die playing football than boxing. Nobody is forced to go into the ring at the end of the day.

As for the NHS not footing the bill, Are smokers and the morbidly obese also going to pay for their own healthcare.

Just ban everything Griff you can't just pick on boxing. I've seen some nasty injuries playing rugby would you ban that as well?

I'm not a boxing fan, tbh I find it boring but you can't ban it because he got hurt. That's the nature of the game, being hit will always mean hurt.

Give me mma over boxing everyday of the week, can't beat a bit of variety rather than standing up and throwing punches then going for a standing cuddle

Never been a fan of Eubank but Eubank Snr was a class act last night. To step into his son's corner and tell him to avoid his head and finish him with body shots was more than decent. It may just have saved the lads life as Eubank Jnr eased off visibly in the 9th and 10th before the stoppage!

Can't remember seeing someone take that much punishment and still walk forward for a long long time. It was sickening watching the uppercuts being delivered and towards the latter rounds Blackwell's head was rocketing back. Strong kid with a bright future but I can see why Griff feels the way he does.... The lads 25 and been comatosed (if that's the word?). Even if it does work out ok in the end that's the last thing anyone wants to see happen. Hope he gets well soon.

The Referee should have stopped the match far sooner, its his job to make sure Blackwell is safe, reading up on the rules of who can stop the fight it states that only the referee and do this, would it not also be logical to have doctors watching the fight to be given the power to also stop it ,but as for banning the sport one sad thing in this world is people enjoy knocking each other out and getting in fights, boxing for me, although it can be brutal, boxing is a way to reduce harmed by this by giving a person a slightly safer theatre in which to be violent.

He's only telling him that because Blackwell wasn't being knocked out by the upper cuts, don't think he was telling to stop hitting his head because he was scared of injuring him. Must've been worried about a dodgy point result if it went all the way.

Sadly a young lad broke his back playing for my local amateur rugby league club on saturday. Sport is dangerous but i really dont think banning it is the answer.

I hate boxing and any of the other ring fighting sports. We used to bait bears and pit Cockerels and dogs against each other in the name of "sport".

I know it's supposed to be an art so maybe maximum 6 rounds and better head protection would be a compromise?

There are plenty of dangerous sports or should I say sports with dangers however in boxing the purpose is to hurt the opponent so much that he cannot continue

I have no problem with amateur boxing it is well run and the boxers appear to respect each other whereas the pro game I find very distasteful boxers taunting each other before virtually every bout in hate filled interviews and promotions usually coming across quite frankly as common thugs in many cases the current world heavyweight champion for example

There are plenty of hard combat sports amateur boxing included built about respect for the opponent I would never ban it but I would demand it cleans its image up

Crippling horses and then shooting them isn't much of a sport either some might say!

I wondered if this might come up as soon as I commented!!

There is a huge difference in training horses to run and jump and race with the unfortunate downside of some horses becoming injured and killed, compared to boxing where the primary aim is to hit someone so hard or so often that you knock him out.

Each to their own I guess but racung has taken measures to improve animal and jockey welfare - modified jumps, whip rules, safety equipment.... maybe boxing should do the same.

I'm sure the six horses that died at Cheltenham will rest easier tonight knowing that. One could argue that a boxer makes his own choice to box a horse has no say in the matter. I'm a fan of both but I can't see how a fan of jumps racing can claim any sort of moral high ground here. As I said above sport is dangerous and people and animals get hurt.

At the end of the day the referee could have stepped in which I Said in my earlier post he should have done, Now I'm no expert by any means but even I could see this lad was taking far to much punishment for his own good, I'd take the old c**nts refereeing licence off him and fine him.....

Don't think i was "taking the moral high ground" at all. Merely giving an opinion on this subject and giving some examples of how racing has tried to improve welfare for horses and jockeys to try and make competing safer for everyone. And I won't even get into the argument about horses being "forced" to compete as that's just simply not true.

Well I don't think it's a argument but I'd be interested to hear how horses have a say as to whether they become racehorses or not.
