Are people for real on here? Rooney retire? One of the better performers in a dire dire tournament. Maybe look at the likes of Kane, sterling, sturridge and others. Not worthy off been anywhere near the squad never mind the starting 11. One person to blame and that's Woy.

It's how good he is now that counts, not what he has done in the past.

In spite of everything, I will always feel the need to stick up for Rooney a little bit, as he's been one of England's better players in the last couple of decades, to me.
Shearer had a pretty good England record, but retired from international duty before he was 30, to prolongue his club career.
Now after years of punditry (apart from a brief stint of management), he has decided he wants to get involved with England, because he is so passionate about his country.
Merson was talking about the lack of passion and pride of the England team and they should all retire immediately, that he always cared and gave his all, but the current team doesn't.
The same Paul Merson who spent most of his playing career pissed.
Rooney might have had a disappointing time of it for England but he has shown far more enthusiasm and commitment than the above two, for example.
So slaughter him as the captain and for how poorly he played against Iceland, fair enough, but think twice before we talk about him not giving a shit etc. I don't buy that.
Ability wise, is he over-rated, or past it? Well maybe, but I really don't think he has been or is one of our worst players, far from it.

Not wanting to be a conspiracy theorist but - Hodgson's build up to the Euros was top drawer, good games exciting new players, who was missing ?

Hodgson's loyalty to Rooney and Wiltshire cost us badly,

1) It had a major impact on the motivation of the other players, or
2) It was not Hodgson's call to play them

How could a motivated team of new young players play so poorly ?
