Evening Gents , Glovers fan in peace ....

Having signed Mark Beck on a two season deal I was interested to view how this forum had taken the news . There is a previous topic thread that seems to be 50/50 regarding if its good or bad thing for Carlisle United , even if some seem to be particularily critical over his ability and potential . Due to the split in opinions I decided to do a bit of digging into his stats to date myself and came up with this -

He's still only 21 yet for Carlisle he has scored FA cup ,League cup , League 1 , and League 2 goals whilst having limited time on the pitch plus Scottish Championship & Scotland U19 goals (oh and 2 in a 15 minute subs run out in his last Carlisle game at Penrith!)

Last season he played the full 90 mins 9 times over the first couple of months of Curles reign , scoring 3 goals ,with Carlisle winning 6 of those games , this was your best sequence of results over the whole season for Carlisle and was equivalent to Championship winning form (or at least play offs)

It's well known throughout football (if you have played the game) that focal point centre forwards do not mature in stature until 27/28 years old therefore it appears we have signed a young and developing footballer with an eye for goal who maybe does more for the team that some pick up on.

The facts don't lie so really hope he's another Paddy M and is given the chance over a run of games to show what he can do for Yeovil

Good luck for the season but not in the two games against us !!

Are you trying to convince us he's a good player?

Softest 6ft5 target man ive ever seen. jumps to 6ft1. he has potential to get goals for you but he's had more than enough time with us and if anything his development has gone backwards

I thought he looked better as a skinny teenager. Now he has filled out he really struggles to get off the ground to head the ball and if he makes contact it could go anywhere.

I wish him well at Yeovil.

In 66 appearances Mark Beck scored 7 goals for us and he wasn't progressing as quickly as he should. It's a great move for him to another league two club and especially getting a two year contract. I personally would over offered a year but his agent has done well for him there. I think all Carlisle fans would wish him well but most would agree it's time for him to move on as it's not working for him at Brunton Park.

Think how disappointed you were with James 'The Vanishing Man' Berrett then times it by 10 to get an idea how you'll feel about Beck after a few games.

Carlisle has a habit of failing to develop strikers and get the best out of them so with that in mind he will probably do a better job than Paddy Madden for you

I think He'll go and score goals said it about Murray and madden , he's 21 and target men don't normally start to come into their until they are 25+, Beck has so much potential. But he only put in two good performances for us the one against yeovil and the performance against Blackburn

im sure you said this about another forward on the last board, cant remember who it was though, you're just saying it so you can claim 'I told you so' if he does get goals.

If Beck scores more than 15 goals in a season for Yeovil I will streak naked in Winter across Brunton Park at half-time with 'I love cocks' painted all over my body.

O/P, when you say he's 1 for the futures and he won't mature till he's late 20's, can Yeovil really wait and invest in a player for that length of time? You can do all the fact digging you want, the thing is I have watched beck since his youth team days. He's not improved one iota.

His goal ratio is 1 in 10 games (roughly, 7 in 66)
He scored 2 v Yeovil a couple seasons back, 5 in 65 games. 3 last season, (2 in 57 games). Is that really the qualities you want in your striker? Enjoy the national league next season if you really do believe he will fire you back to league 1

In his defence strikers need a supply especially 6foot 3 target men....

The lads been feeding off scraps in a terrible team relying on teenagers to try and get us out of the mire

Might I add playing for a couple of poor managers

New club fresh start decent crosses into box if he gets a couple early goals he could be off and running...

This thread is hilarious, OP has come on here to convince himself and us that he's a good singning

Stats tend to lie anyway, if you'd actually watched Beck play for us you'd have easily seen he doesn't bring enough to the side to keep him m on any longer.

Best of luck to the lad though

Ps. Billy Paynter has a better goal scoring record than Beck... "stats"

I wouldn't read too much into the anti Beck comments, most people would have and did say that Madden wouldn't make it either. Sometimes players need new surroundings and little differences make a big difference. For example, I believe one of the reasons why Madden failed here is a daft reason but I think it's right. He was a box player, box players thrive on a smaller pitch with plenty of balls into the box which were 2 key things he didn't have at Carlisle. He just seemed lost on our big pitch, didn't have the pace to get in behind and too weak to play with his back to goal. Similar for Beck, yes he can be out jumped by a 5 foot 10 full back but now and again he would win a important header but if that's 40 yards from goal as we can't get up the park then that can be different to winning that important header in the box on a tight pitch.

I think he will do well for you. If he starts most of your games and play to his strengths he will easily get into double figures. You will need decent wide men who can deliver crosses from high up and not hopeful diagonals like we did with him, deliver the ball to him when he is in the box and he will score, deliver to him 40 yards out and he looks a fish out of water.

I honestly can't understand folk saying he will bang them in if given decent service from out wide. Have they actually seen him jump? he's 6-5 and jumps 5'11 with a sack of potatoes on his shoulders. Unless he changes his jumping technique he really will struggle.

Don't get me wrong, I always want our former YTS players to go on and do well and I hope he gets a decent coach who can sort out his weaknesses and makes a decent career for himself.

When he was at Falkirk he started poorly but after a few first team games his anticipation and first touch improved markedly and he was highly thought of. I think with a run in the first team he will be a good signing

If he looked like improving you would've thought a striker like Colin West was in his day would've taken him under his wing and taught him how to really play the position.

Given that Beck seems weak, has little to no control of the football or pace they've given him away for free as they deem him not good enough.

As has been said before no improvement has been made in three plus years. Poor as a lone frontman also as the ball doesn't get held up and just keeps coming back at you.

I'd like him to prove us doubters wrong but I just cannot see it and predict that he will be released 12-months into his deal and end up in Gatheshead,QOTS etc.

To be fair most of us knew there was a player in Madden and could see potential - the issue was he was poorly deployed by Abbott often used on the wing or when rarely played in his correct position the tactics (or lack of them) and team set-up wasn't playing to his strengths.

That's utter bull. Madden was rubbish with us. So was Nahki Wells.

Glenn Murray wasn't a worldbeater, either.

Madden and Wells werent rubbish for us they just werent given a chance rightly or wrongly. Glenn Murray was behind Hawley Bridges and Holmes. Holmes was no Worldbeater but in that front 3 he performed very well. Murray couldnt force his way in but that didnt make him crap.

To be honest, I'm not concerned with the goalscoring statistics, whether they make him sound good or bad, what I am concerned about here is what I've seen. What I've seen is a big lad who really struggles to use his size in any way, he is shrugged off the ball by much smaller opponents, far too often and far too easily. He wins far fewer headers than his size suggests he should, mainly because he can't jump. The headers he does win tend not to be anywhere close to a player in a blue shirt, I know it isn't easy, and he has struggled to get any support anywhere near him, but still. Worst for me is he just can't control a football, he (at his size) is going to be expected to have the ability to hold the ball and link play, he doesn't, his first touch is terrible, he traps the ball further than I can kick it, his awareness and distribution are woeful and his running off the ball isn't very good. I had hoped he'd be a good striker, he looked to have the attributes, big and powerful and with youth and energy on his size, but he seems not to have made the step up unfortunately.

I hope somebody can work on his weaknesses, which are many and varied, and produce a good lower league footballer, because clearly there is some potential, but unless he's a lot tougher than he is at the moment, I struggle to see him make an impression.

Re:Stats for Mark Beck 27 Jul 2025 22:59 #27

He can head, he can finish and he can out muscle people but perhaps only 30% of the time.

When he is getting crap service and 50 yard diagonals from the right back position, winning 30% of anything looks shit. Play high up, get to the bye line and let him win 30% of anything in the box and you will get a decent goal ratio out of him.

Think of Mick Quin. If you judged him on what he contributed outside of the box you wouldn't play him for the dog and duck. Play to his strengths, throw it in the box high up in the final third and he had a goals per game ratio that alan shearer would have been happy with. Put him in a team where he is expected to get in behind or is being punted the ball into the channels to chase then oh dear....

Re:Stats for Mark Beck 28 Jul 2025 00:21 #28

Just looked at his heading stats
Attempted headers won 7%
Headers flicked onto a team mate 3%
Times his feet have left the ground when attempting a header 15% (not bad)

I did read on another thread that 97% of stats are incorrect though so this is not bible so good luck Yeovil
