Cracking game played in Cricket style weather. I was impressed with most of the new signings and CMW's cross for Rigg was class. Asamoah looked sharp today as well.

Don't know much about Oldham but their lack of names on shirts made me wonder if they weren't all trialists. I thought Atkinson played well, Raynes was patchy but looked good in the air, CMW did more in five minutes than Grainger had managed in the previous 60 and Rigg looked good. Midfieldwas disappointing.

A bit scrappy compared to Tuesday but a few positive signs. Joyce and Kennedy have looked impressive. Balanta did very well yesterday. If we play 3 at the back with wing backs CMW is a much better option than Grainger but unfortunately I don't think that is going to happen. Too much messing about and risk taking with short by kicks with Raynes and Gillespie the main culprits but not the only ones. At least twice yesterday the player receiving had to take the ball inside the area thus having a retake. Obviously the save thing to do if under pressure.

I thought the midfield didn't look that strong. Joyce struggled to find a pass going forward, Raynes and Gillespie looked like they had been told not to punt the ball forward hence the great number of balls across the back. Balanta played a few beauties opening up their defence but didn't put their full back under much pressure. We looked a totally different team when Rigg and CMW came on.
Thought Oldham's number 7 payed well, the dumpy lad

We've fannied on with the ball across the back line in both games. Simple rule of defending - don't pass across your box, we'll get caught out if we do. Raynes has a mistake in him every game, ridiculous we'd pick him ahead of Troy. Ditto CMW should be ahead of Grainger if we go 3-5-2.

Miller and Brough both get up and down, Brough has a lovely cross on him, could be his breakthrough season.

Kennedy and Joyce will be solid, think we'll suffer from chopping and changing in the advanced midfield role. Hery, Balanta, Osei and Rigg could all play it?

Up front, why has Ibehre hardly played? Should be paired with Wyke to grow an understanding? Rigg has impressed when he's come on as a Sub in both Home friendlies...

Roll on 3pm Saturday...

In my opinion, players who stood out for the right reasons: Hery, Meppen-Walter, Rigg, Miller, Atkinson, Raynes, Kennedy, Balanta, Asamoah,

CMW was a breath of fresh air - mainly as he was looking to move forward right from the start. The cross for Rigg goal was excellent.

Raynes very vocal.

Players who stood out for the wrong reasons: Grainger.

Of the serious mistakes he committed three-quarters of them - what was that throw in about ?(at the same time he made about 3 important interceptions)).

A strange game. No one in the coaching area for the whole 90 minutes. Players instructed to play the ball from the back and loads of pass backs and a lot of errors. Oldham missed two open goals.

I feel fairly optimistic and I am looking forward to the Mansfield game.

Excellent meat and potato pie in the Sunset Lager smelled bad..

Come on guys...
Loads on here last season complaining about hoof ball being played. Now that we are trying to play more from the back they still get panned.

It's not to say that we will be taking 10 yard goal kicks as a rule during this season, more about go on lads give it a try, can you handle the ball under pressure and in tight spaces? If they can't, Curle will know they can only play one way, if they can handle it he will know he can change the gameplan. I'm sure he wil have been testing Raynes too, he knows he is an ideal head on a stick but given all of our creative players are in midfield, can he be trusted to find them rather than taking the easy option of thrashing it into the channel for the front lads to chase down.

Exactly! I'm sure the people twining about this have eve said themselves that friendlies are there for experimenting and trying new ideas!
If these new ideas don't work then surely we won't be trying them once the season starts.

I suppose some folk can't get to kip at night if they haven't twined about something to do with Curle though...

It's good to see they are trying to play football rather than hoofing the ball in hope. That said there are times when you have to get rid of the ball be it into row z or the river we must cyst out the silly mistakes and most importantly take our chances because if we do then that will naturally ease the pressure on the defence. The season looks promising but i have been here before and been left frustrated si I expect the worst after all we are talking about Carlisle Utd.

To be honest I thought we were getting away with it OK first half, then Oldham sussed it in the second and 'pushed up' a couple of yards, therefore giving us less space and time, this is where I think they need to 'mix it' a little, keep the opposition guessing.
On the whole though thought it was another decent performance. shame Ibehere was injured as I would have like to see him again, thought the midfield again looked solid and I cant make up my mind between Balanta and Hery, both I thought had decent games Raynes had a much better game than on Tuesday and at last we seemed to have found a decent right back. And.......without trying to get to overexcited I thought all the subs came on and slotted in quite nicely, especially CMW and Rigg, who I thought was superb.
Hell at this rate I may even get to think Curle is starting to know what he is doing....................
