Has been appointed captain at Hartlepool, bit Suprised at that.

If he gets regular first team football I think he'll do well across there, we could be paying half the wages of the division's top scorer

Stats don't give the whole picture. Service, partnerships, injuries, etc are rarely reflected in stats.

In another sport Mitchel Johnson bowls extremely fast and often quite wayward, but the odd ball on target gets a wicket which masks how bad he has bowled. I still wouldn't like to face him mind.

People's obsession with stats is ruining football in my mind.

Next they'll have people on Sky Sport News discussing attributes that they've taken from Football Manager. Oh, wait....

Whatever the stats do or don't say, I would probably bet against Paynter being League 2 top scorer. He's pretty cack from a goalscoring point of view, if we're honest.

Totally agree that folk are obsessed with stats with regards how good a player is/isn't and correct they don't tell the whole story, but I'm not talking about how good a player is here I'm talking about how many goals he'll score.

The stats say Paynter doesn't score many goals so when someone mentions about him being the divisions top goalscorer this season then the stats are very relevant!

To wade in the whole stats debate..... Henry talked about Iniesta.... who I think 99.9% of the population would have him in their side.... His stats are fairly mediocre..... Henry talked about this and said Iniesta's the player who assist's the assist... if you see what I mean! It's a shambles and complete lack of knowledge when people judge a midfielder or striker by goals and assists! It's an even bigger shambles when pundits do it!

Makelele! Was he sh*t? Bet I've more goals and assists!

Back on topic though Paynter's sh*t and won't be League 2 top scorer....

I'd just like to put things into perspective here.....mark beck scored double the amount of goals over preseason than big billy.


Strikers are judged on goals more than anything.

Also, the fact that Ronnie Moore at one point over summer said he had decided his captain but wouldn't tell the players yet, all he said was it wouldn't be 1 of the new signings, and wouldn't be a striker makes me feel that Moore doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. Id be peed off if I was a Hartlepool fan

To be clear I absolutely don't think that Paynter will be the top scorer in the league, but that's partly because I don't think his game is based on being a goalscorer like it was in that season at Swindon.

If their team is built around him (they'd need a big pitch, the fatty) and they play to his strengths he could have a good season, but he'll not score 20 goals.

So with some things there is a bigger picture.

What was part of Billlys problem at CUFC?.....wanted to get home sharpish and leave others to do some of the tasks around the club such as schools, community visits etc......giving him the captaincy makes him responsible for that sort if stuff rather than Being a passenger.

Giving him a leading role on the pitch may also make sure he gives 100% rather than just doing enough...

Can't knock Ronnie Moores record, perhaps he has identified Billy as a 20 goal a season man but has dependencies related to conviction etc. captaincy could well be a cute way of sorting that.

There is a notion that if you have a trouble maker that is also a talent, make the trouble maker the police man of the others. If you tell the trouble maker to behave, They automatically rebell like a mixed up teenager.. Empowerment rather than an eye for an eye, could be good leadership from Ronnie Moore......like identifying the troublemaker in the pub and putting him on the door, makes a solution out of a problem.

Like Roy Keane at MU. If Fergie picked a fight with him everyday because he was an arse, fergie wouldn't of had half the success. But Fergie said you go and be an arse with the changing room, keep them in check, professional and committed, use your hard faced arsy skills to keep them on their toes and set the standards for them thus making best use of someone rather than them being a problem for the manager.

Curle will play Ibehre in the Karl Hawley style, holding the ball up and passing it on thus creating more opportunities on goal than we are used to. As a result I can see the goals being spread around with maybe a few players like Wyke, Kennedy and Rigg getting into double figures. However the prospect of us just having the top scorer in the league is exceedingly slim - maybe 100-1 so none of those prices look good value.

I've just put a fair old wedge on Charlie Wyke so hear's hoping.

I could see Rigg being the lower league lump that can score goals, he gets in the right positions naturally and that is 50% of the problem solved, of course he would need plenty of game time to make it happen.

Wyke also has the class for this division but can ultimately see them both cutting into each others minutes.

I like both Rigg and Wyke. I'm hoping that goals and confidence will see them have a good start and lead to the possibility of them both playing eventually.

I wouldn't be unhappy seeing Rigg play deeper as he did for Penrith something of a lower league Lampard where he got hatfuls for Penrith....The lads done okay mind and if he gets a couple early goals could really take off....


I'm expecting more goals as the emergence of a rapidly growing Brough and the promising Miller we have some good width for first time in yonks...

Honestly- Richard Brodie at Southport is a better player, striker and forward. I expect big billy to go all out to score against us but i can't see him getting into double figures. Unless it's a pie eating contest.

I agree he'll have a storming game against us at their place and that'll be it.

Scored more goals than the entire Carlisle squad so far this season. There's a stat for you.
