According to the Sun, Jamie Vardy has used an abbreviation of the word 'Japanese' which it turns out is as offensive as the abbreviation of 'Pakistani'.

Thank god there's no abbreviation for Thai.

The world has gone Political Correctness mad.

Soon it will be conceived as racist to call Scottish people 'Scots'.

Vardy should have said he'd apologise once the Japanese had apologised for the Rape of Nanking (that's a city, not someone's gran)

Strange one, this. I don't think the term is offensive personally, but if he's in a row with someone and uses that as ammunition, that's bound to cause trouble.

If the person he was in a row with was black and he used the 'N' word, there'd be a much bigger outcry than there is on this and I would assume that some of those on here saying the media is making a mountain out of a mole hill of this would think it's offensive, too.

My point is more about the double standards of it all and how weird it is that people get offended at such similar issues in such different ways than anything else.

Surely calling somebody ginger, gay, black, Jap or anything else that they're born with should hold the same weight in offensiveness.

As I'm not Japanese I don't know how offensive this is to someone from Japan, but I wouldn't use the term... similar to calling someone a chinky in my mind.

Is it similar to calling someone a Aussie? if not why?. Having read the article id say he was definitely being offensive.

Any Australian I've met is happy to be called an Aussie, so don't think there's a direct comparison here. As I said I don't know whether the term Jap is offensive to Japanese people.

Before everyone get's into a 'PC Brigade' cluster-wank, isn't the full story that he was threatening the asian guy/casino staff and had to be dragged off by other players/mates before he kicked-off?

I had no idea Jap was classed as offensive, is it not just a shortened method of explaining where that person is from? I would put it in the same bracket as Brit, Scot, Dane, Swede, Turk etc.
Different to words that are commonly used to describe Chinese and Pakistanis, which I need not repeat as they are prevalently used in racism. I would have thought the word "NIp" would be more likely to cause this level of outrage.

Offensive to whom I ask? Almost definitely not any Japanese folks, rather white, middle class liberals

Click that link i posted above.

I remember a few years ago i got a bollocking in a skype chatroom after i said i was watching a cricket match. I was asked who was playing so i quickly typed Aussies v Pakis. Someone pulled me and i hadnt a clue id typed something supposedly offensive.

It's strange that the "NIp" word is deemed offensive (mainly due to the Americans) as Nippon is just Japan in Japanese.

I think that the trouble here may more lie in the tone and intent that Vardy used it, as it is quite apparent that he meant to cause offense by using the word.
