TOPIC: TRAVEL TO HARTLEPOOL

We are running a coach to Hartlepool leaving at 9.30am stopping off at a pub on way.

Price difference often comes up, and is frequently explained. CUSAT clearly charge more for the nearer games to subsidise the likes of Plymouth, where they're charging £40 to go to tonight's game. Give them credit where it's due, they're the only ones that I know of that take a bus to every away game. Are there any other buses going to Plymouth tonight, and if so, how much are they charging?

This is the eternal argument though isn't it?

Why should an occassional traveller (localish games only for example) pay more to go to their 2 or 3 games per season so that someone with the time and money to go to Plymouth on a Tuesday night gets a few quid knocked off?

£18 does seem excessive to go to Hartlepool.

The thing is though, there are pretty nearly always alternatives to the nearer trips, Ali has been going a while, Route 66 runs buses to most of the nearer ones too. In other words they choose to run buses to the nearer games because they can fill them.

CUSAT choose to guarantee a bus to every game, some of those buses may be half empty, some will run at a loss. Rather than go bust they choose to subsidise some of the longer trips by charging more on the shorter ones.

Is this tough on supporters who only go to a few nearer matches,; not in my eyes as they have alternatives. The shorter trips are more easily drivable, more likely to connect with rail and in most cases there are other buses traveling.

The bus is still cheaper than driving over to Hartlepool; I could never ask a fellow Carlisle fan for petrol money when I was going to the game anyway, so I guess it's horses for courses.

So I guess you don't have a season ticket either if you don't feel people who commit to the whole season should get a discount?

Not a shambles, just run differently to how you would like it, in which case you have the alternative to run travel to your own model.

I have a Season Ticket, which is a completely separate issue and nothing to do with this!

Regarding the buses, the people running them have gone against why such buses were set up as an alternative. Something that makes me chuckle given the kerfuffle when it was set up in Brian's day. They're free to run then how they like mind so good luck to them - I'd rather hitch then go with them, again a seperate matter.

So did you put the price up if half a dozen didn't turn up o n the day, or shoulder the loss yourself?

Plenty folk didn't turn up, I had their cash a couple of weeks before so not my problem!

No need to as full. As already said, each to their own how they run theirs. They're happy enough!

Still all this detracts from the fact someone who maybes makes Hartlepool will be happy knowing they've helped pay for Plymouth even though they won't be going!

I can see the arguments for both sides but have to say I'm firmly on the side of not wanting to subsidise someone else's travel to games I don't go to.

As bumble says though there are other options to those who don't want to contribute to the cost of Portsmouth or Plymouth or Exeter. A car with three in it would cost around 7 quid each in fuel I'd say.

Each to their own though.

Nice surprise getting a free trip and very welcome. It's been a good journey down so far but many hours on the road to come.

Forgot to say that there is an insurance so as long as the bus has set off, if the game is called off then fans get their money back, which is very nice when the bus pulls into Crawley car park only to find the game is off.

SkyBet will probably load the cost into new accounts for you where you have to play it through a few times!

Not just the CUSAT bus travelers they're sorting out. Also paying tickets/travel for other coach/minibus goers.

Be nice if the travelling fans donated it to charity. I would.

Ah, ok, not a problem for you personally then. I have never been called elite before, other bus clubs are available. For me knowing I can pay monthly and go to every game and travel with friends suits me but thankfully it isn't compulsory. Just passed a sign saying PlymouthArgyle fc so signing off for now.

I'm with CCU all the way on this, overcharging people so the clique can have their longer trips for cheaper? Awful.
Also, I would have thought that the people who are more likely to go to Hartlepool/Morecambe/Accy are older folk who only maybe get to 1 or 2 aways a season, and kids doing their first away games. And so these people, the loyal supporters for decades, or the next generation, are the ones shafted.

I agree with the pricing policy. If folk choose not to go to Plymouth for example, then that's their loss. It's 6 & two 3's to be honest. I like schemes that reward loyalty.

I don't see the problem with the way they run the buses, but then I prefer to go by car to away games. Last time I went by coach we got stuffed away at Tranmere in the cup, 6-1 I think.

Congratulations on totally missing the point.
Some people - older folk, kids - will only go to more "local" aways as that's all they can manage.
I think 18 quid is a bit steep for a trip to Hartlepool. I'd rather some kids were going on the cheap to places like that, so that they get the bug.

People who went to Plymouth - they're loyal supporters.
Guess what - they aren't the only ones! Some folk just have more time and money.
Do we want to make it easier for people to go away, or harder?

Sorry if I missed the point, while I agree that there will be people who only want to travel to the nearer games I really find it at best tactless that you assume that because people are older they are somehow unable to travel the length of the country.

Also totally agree that traveling to away games doesn't make anyone a more loyal supporter. Like a lot of fans I moan when I think something is wrong but support the club as much as I can.

Not really sure who "we" is. I don't run the buses, I'm not on the committee, I use the bus because it's the most convenient way for me to get to all the away games. I enjoy not having to drive and I enjoy the day out with friends. I am also pleased that there is a group that offers supporters the chance to go to every away game. There are other groups who offer supporters the chance to go to most of the games nearer Carlisle, so I really don't see that it could be a lot easier for fans to travel.
