Don't be too concerned yet. Curle keeps saying we've not done finishing sessions in training yet, maybe we've not covered Defence either. It'll be reet once that starts!

With 3 at the back and our best defender and midfielder warming the bench we were always going to be facing uphill.

It is early season though and Wimbledon and Hartlepool will be easier

Paying the price of our apathy. The board were on the back foot and we shied off and played the cautious game. We should have demanded real change. Instead they threw a few scraps and we were grateful.

Problem is we don't have a plan b we never change. Plymouth knew how we would set up wouldn't it have been great if we had surprised them with something different. Didn't we do something similar a few years ago with a Xmas tree formation that worked until other clubs figured it out.

If Curle absolutely insists on playing 3 at the back...Get Troy off the bench and put him in for Raynes, get Courtney back from his trial and put him in for Grainger, then put Atkinson alongside them once he returns from his injury.

I'm just being daft in thinking that will actually happen though.

Well there was for Plymouth 4 easy goals which our so called defence handed on a plate to them...............................
we really need to get the defence sorted and back to the flat back four we can still play the passing game well from midfield

Don't we need to sign new defenders?

Remember Troy and Courtney were part of the shit tip we had last season. I know Troy is decent, but Courtney had a dreadful season defensively.

I was just thinking about Atkinson. Since he got injured we've conceded 8. That could be done to him or Miller moving inside meaning we're exposed in the wide areas.

Maybe Leacock could be the answer as well as Troy and Atkinson. Something needs to change anyway but I don't think just reverting back to last seasons failures is the answer.

CMW was fannied about being played in the middle of the park, and has never been the same since!

Leacock is training with a view to a trial, which suggests he's ages away from competitive football?

I hope something works. Troy i definitely feel needs to be in there somewhere, Courtney struggled last season but then again so did Grainger, arguably more so, yet he retains his place in the side week in and week out. Courtney's technique also lends itself more to the style of football we're attempting to play, his ball playing abilities are better than any of our other defenders, so that could work in his favour.

Leacock could make a difference, but something tells me Curle's more likely to put him alongside Raynes and Grainger than any other setup. Once Atkinson gets back i'd stick him in the centre and play Miller as wing back, Brough/McQueen on the other side. McQueen can play either side too so can provide good competition if he's not in the side based on what i've seen of him. I'm being hopeful here though, i'm losing whatever faith i had left in our defenders.

Before he got shifted into midfield he was poor. I don't think it's a lack of ability I just think his understanding, positional sense and reading of the game isn't up to scratch. Maybe BW think they can give him the coaching he needs to get the potential out of him.

Leacock may be shit as well, but I really don't think going back to last seasons formula is the answer.

I also think playing full backs as full backs, either side of the 3. As we did at Mansfield would greatly help the situation.

This maybe a bit controversial but I think this is to do with the way they are set up. This playing from the back shit clearly isn't working, time and time again during pre-season and in the season we are getting ourselves in the poo poo over it, I'm not completely blaming Curle here, as it is quite refreshing to try and play a different way, however the players simply don't have the nouse to play it properly, its simply inviting the opposition to push further up the pitch to make mistakes.
However I would say that Curle is a complete and utter clown for keeping one of the best defenders in this league on the bench (Troy).

I find it strange that whilst we are all - quite rightly - unhappy about the defensive line-up, no-one talks about the goalkeeper? Can Mark Gillespie do no wrong? IMHO we need a proper keeper. Worst defensive record in the League for two seasons running and no-one blames the keeper - unbelievable.

In terms of ability, Troy IS one of the best in the league i would say, his injury problems are what stops him from playing at a higher level.

Totally agree with this. Everyone keeps saying we can't possibly play Troy, as 'he's only fit for half the games'.

So what? It would be better to have a tighter defence for even half the games, than to ship four goals in every single game...

The argument I suppose is that they want to build partnerships and Troy is not going to play every game - not sure how much longer this argument can be sustained mind you....
