Can't say I know of people that laugh at me, apart from a glory hunting half wit that supports Man Utd, mind you when I said " I wouldn't go a pay £45 quid to see that shit, with that fat little Scouser running about pretending to play football" he soon shut up!!
Infact when I lived down in Yorkshire I was quite admired because I supported my home town club.

Because almost every year during preseason we convince ourselves that this season is going to be different, our squad is shaping up nicely, we should be aiming for top half etc etc.

Then bang, we get brought back down to earth within a few games and suddenly it dawns on us that another season of same old shite is ahead of us.

Yeah I get laughed at as well. Mainly by people who think professional football ends after 20th place in the Premier League.

Don't mind at all, always rather folk would laugh with me rather than at me, but I'm happy with my choice of supporting Carlisle, would rather do that than deride some one elses choice and be an armchair fan of Prem football.

When I lived down south in Basingstoke. My first night in the warehouse my team leader asked me which team I supported so I said Carlisle United. He then said no, which premier team do you support so I again said Carlise United. He then said no you have to support a premiership team so I said I am from Carlisle so support Carlisle so f*ck off. He was a Manchester United fan and had never been to see them live.
Need I say anymore!!!!!

If you have an ounce of sportsmanship in you you would respect them...

I don't and have never lived in Carlisle. I get some amazed looks when folk find out who I support but I also get some very positive comments around my travel.

Difference with us and Premier League teams is folk ask how we are doing and what league we are in, I don't follow the Premier League but even I don't have to ask the Liverpool and Man U fans what league they are in.

A lass who works for me told me last week that she was watching United last Friday night. She now knows not to say that.

One of my colleagues a month or so ago told me that United were set to sign Schweinsteiger. I started buzzing with excitement asking where he got this information from, he told me Sky Sports. Then he looked rather baffled when I said "But I thought Man U were favourites to sign him. I personally thought the billionaire was a pack of lies instilled by Nixon in order to keep Lapping away. But there clearly is one now, and he clearly means business."

It hasn't been my experience generally that people laugh at Carlisle fans. Although Carlisle born, and proud of it, I've lived in several different parts of the country and found most folks decent and a fair few that look for the Carlisle result so they can give me a bit of banter the following day.

This thread has reminded me of a few particularly drunk and, it has to be said, abusive Carlisle fans at the game last night of which I - and others - found totally unacceptable.

The bottom line is that if we are proud of our City and our Team we should give - in this case - the citizens of Devon and Cornwall a really good memory of the Cumbrians visiting their area.

The best way to do that - as we all know - is to get behind the team 100%, make sure that everyone knows that the Carlisle fans are in the ground and under no circumstances behave or chant abusively, it's embarrassing and it's letting every other Cumbrian down badly.

Well, that's my view, which I know a few folk might think is old-fashioned.

I tend to respect anyone who gets off their arses and goes to games regardless of who they support. Its the clowns whove never been to Anfield Old Trafford etc that get on my wick. Guy i used to work with was a massive Arsenal fan. Always wore a different shirt plus hat cup etc. Turned out ive been to the Emirates once more than he has and ive been once.

I walk round the shipyard with my various old Carlisle shirts on 5 days a week win loose draw or even get relegated. People often spark up conversations about encounters with Carlisle but nobody laughs about it.Just good old banter that's all.

As a pools fan if your on holiday and there was a group of Carlisle fans or group of man u arsenal Liverpool fans in a pub. We would talk to the Carlisle fans every single time. I just don't have any respect for people who follow the big clubs who dont live there. They will never experience the lows and the occasional highs of following our clubs. People who laugh when you say you follow Hartlepool Carlisle or darlo you tend to find never step foot near a football ground.

I've had this question so many times it's unfunny. It's as if they think the premier lge is a closed shop and every division it it's own separate entity. If their chosen team gets relegated do they just stop following them and pick someone else up, probably not as they wouldn't pretend to support anyone who was in danger of getting relegated in the first place.

People like this only follow football as it's a trendy thing to do. I've seen folk from school years later who didn't have the slightest interest in it walk round with the big four tops on pretending to be a lifelong fan.

I don't think people laugh at Carlisle fans in particular. Having said that, I remember being laughed at by a Tranmere fan in the early 1990s, simply because I told him, when asked, that I was a Carlisle fan. I think Tranmere were doing well in the second tier and we were low down in the fourth.

I absolutely loved it when they got relegated last season.

The only people who are probably justified in laughing at Carlisle fans are the ones who looks at some of the posts on the message board.

Trouble is after a while it stops being amusing and just becomes predictable to the point where you can just look at the poster and make up the derogatory comments yourself!

Why do people laugh at Carlisle fans? 20 Aug 2025 16:49 #28

Your average football fan really does not laugh at Carlisle United as a club. The majority of people have no idea what's going on at the club, and those that do will have some sort of vested interest in the club; usually caused by knowing a Carlisle fan or two.

If you asked every fan in the country which 5 clubs are the biggest mockery in England Carlisle would barely get a mention. We know what's going on at the club and we complain about it to our friends, family and colleagues, but aside from people knowing that we travelled eight thousand miles to Plymouth on Tuesday to get a humping, they've no reason to laugh at us.

Those that laugh at you because you don't support a Premier League team do so for that very reason, and would do so for every club in the country that isn't in the Premier League.

As Pools fan said, I'd much rather talk to some football league fans about football than a Man Utd fan because we can talk about our games against each other and former players that we've shared. Your average Man Utd fan would only be interested in telling you that they're about to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.

It's the same for followers of "unfashionable" teams nationwide. I live in Scotland, travel a distance to support Carlisle and proud of it. No, I don't support Rangers or Celtic; or Liverpool or Man. U. I've never much liked glory boys.

Often find that those chuckling when I tell them I’m a Carlisle fan – typically Premiership glory hunters – do it to hide their embarrassment that they know very little about lower league football, in fact often know surprisingly little about football at all!

I've got friends who support Accrington, Fleetwood, Morecambe and Orient and I frequently get laughed at.

More to do with the size of their clubs compared to ours and them doing much better than us.

The reason I'm so critical of our club is that I sometimes watch these sides abd these so called tinpot clubs do things so much better than we do.

Last season I told a guy I am a Carlisle fan, in a very poor attempt at trying to appear like he knows about the lower leagues he said "they're doing quite well this year aren't they?"
I replied "Well. We're fighting relegation." He didn't know what to say.

Working in Nottingham I used to get loads of grief off various members of staff there because I support Carlisle United.
It started off as sniggering and poking fun....then Forest got relegated and suddenly the boot was on the other foot
I was delirious after we beat them at their place....how much fun did i have the next shift!!!
"Cumbria My lord, Cumbria" was sung many many times to passing porters...

I've had the whole range having lived in a few parts of the country, Glasgow, Liverpool, Nottingham, Cheshire- it ranges from knowing respect to utter contempt....depends largely on the brain power of the person judging though I find....
