TOPIC: Watering The Pitch

Watering The Pitch 21 Aug 2025 23:01 #1

As the last 2 games have shown a slip at the wrong time has cost us dearly. Would it not be an idea NOT to water the pitch prior to the game ?

Water it, but not as much. Cambridge was extreme but both sides play on the same pitch. Watering can't be used as an excuse

The pitch at Plymouth was watered heavily at half time, and I because of that I suspect beforehand as well, which was a consequence for us because of the goals that resulted. I only saw one Plymouth player slip compared to our some 8 to 10, 3 of which were critical

BB - I think you may have inadvertently included your Lottery numbers for tomorrow night in that last post.

Glad I didn't give the 5th number cause you would be cashing in and reducing my jackpot by half tomorrow. B)

Curle blamed footwear as one of the reasons for a thrashing - Plymouth watered the pitch heavily for a reason - and it worked!

Exactly, our players must be too thick to realise the wetter the pitch the longer the stud.

.. and very easy at half time just to water your opponents half of the pitch and penalty area. Devious

Think I once saw a premier league groundsman on SSNHQ saying they water it for a few different reasons.

-softer surface resulting in less compound impact injuries through the season
-give it a bit more 'play' to help with zippy passing
-helps protect it through season.

No idea who it was and no idea if I've recalled the info correctly.

Someone ask DM

“As we said on Tuesday, if they’d gone in 3-1 down at half time they wouldn’t have had any complaints at all. Their manager said after the game that we caused them issues, so much so they changed their shape to try to match us."

wouldn't it then have been prudent at that point to change the formation to avoid them 'matching us' seeing as they had sussed it?

“The lads were disappointed about it. We can’t plan for it but if there is a slippery surface then take every precaution you can to counter it. Wear the longest studs you possibly can. Sometimes it’s not about comfort or fashion, it’s about practicality. It’s a lesson learned and we now know that if we’re playing on a surface where the grass is short and it’s a little bit slippery then we’ll be wearing high heels!”

a lesson learned? really? we'll see.

Excuses excuses a bad workman blames his tools. Sad fact our defence is weak whether this is down to not being used to the system or the players still has to be determined but will be surprised if there is a change in personnel today.
