Agreed - not had a great start to the season but he was excellent in the last couple of months of the last campaign. Glad to see we've got this sorted quickly.

Absolutely bewildered as to why/how he has earned another contract?! I think he gets a lot of protection because he's one of our own... had he been a free transfer or acquired from another team I can't see how he'd still be here!

I'm trying not to be too harsh here because it's excellent to see lads come through the youth system even if they do move on Jansen, Delap, Dempsey etc but I cannot understand how Brough is earning a living as a footballer!

Since his exceptional performance against Blackburn I've never seen him have a good game! He is distinctly average.... I don't see him every day like Curle and the management team but there must be potential there but he's at an age now where hiding on the wing doesn't cut it! Shanking crosses out of play more often than not doesn't cut it! Having the inability to beat a man doesn't cut it!

I sincerely hope he regains the form he showed against Blackburn but can't see it sorry...

Good to hear Curle isn't sitting back and waiting till last minute for contract renewals.

Glad he's staying a bit longer, I think there's a hell of a lot to come from him and a bit of hard work getting the consistency and we've got a great asset.

Better than Grainger and should be played at fullback instead of wing .Thats were hes best performances happened at the end of last season. Why cant Curle see what everyone else can see that Graingers a liability.

I dont think Graingers as big a liability as some make out on here. Oh i forgot Thirlwells gone so someone has to take over that role eh.

It's the right thing to do, this. He still won't be on a lot of money and as previously said hopefully this will give him a confidence boost.

He hasn't started the season particularly well but we've only played a handful of game and we have about 45 left.

There's always got to be one hate figure in the team, and if you're towards the end of your career, slow and play in a defensive position you seem to be in the firing line more than most.

Grainger's only just turned 29. I'd hate to think what he'd be like towards the end of is career!

Ha ha I live how you say you are trying not to be harsh and then proceed to tear him to bits. As you do at every opportunity at the moment. Young lads need encouraged and nurtured not slaughtered.

I think there is definitely ability there and he is a good tackler and crosser (usually). A bit ungainly at times but worth persevering with.

Oh I don't know, we seem to do a decent job of ripping into the youngsters too; Symington, Beck, Potts in the last couple of years and now Brough the latest to cop it.

Going by comments on this board so far, Brough and Raynes together with defending champion Grainger seem to be making the early running for the Paul Gorman & Chris Billy Memorial Scapegoat of the Season award.

Did Brough sign his last contract under Curle? He may have hit the targets for a new deal to kick in. If not though its still a no brainer for me.
Young lad, not a massive wage, him being in the team can attract younger players into our academy, usually excellent crosser when doesn't have too much time to think about where exactly he wants to put it,when he does it naturally his delivery is very good, he will get better with that decision making with age and more games, excellent attitude.

I know clubs are very much interested in him, as a scout you look at height, athletic ability, left foot, decent crosser and report back that he has the attributes to be a player. Yes he has not started this season great and not hit the heights of the Blackburn game, but he will get back to that. I think this season the wing back role has been more of a left wing role they have been that high up the pitch, left back is where I see him and hopefully a good one for us which i'm sure he can/will be. He will be inconsistent for a while yet so we need to be patient.

I think Brough has already taken over that role for a few folk on here.
It's unbelievable really.
A young lad at the start of his career still learning the game, with a hell of a lot to learn, and even more to offer, and some folk on here are already jumping on him.
It didn't take folk long. A couple of below par performances from Brough in a system that's alien to him and most of the team, and he's already the scapegoat.
Shanful.

some fans look for a fault in players and the sad thing is they often pick the youngsters as the people who make these comments do not have the intelligence to understand that they are still learning,

Agreed, watched all the goals conceded this season at the weekend again, and Raynes and Joyce seem at fault more than others but nothing gets said against them...

Probably worth pointing out that Grainger is currently top of the assists too. I know his jobs to defend, but he deserves credit for some of the balls he's put in too. The cross for Jabo's goal against Chesterfield was superb.

Graingers best asset is his 60yd cross field pass, pings it accurately and switches the play in an instant. He'd be fine as an out and out LB in a flat 4 for me...

Having played CB myself to a reasonable standard, I don't understand how KC can't see how poor Grainger's positional sense is when playing there. I agree with CCU that I'd play him a flat back 4 as a LB but he's not a CB.

He does get some undeserved stick in my opinion but some is justified, e.g. he often loses his man in the box (see Corr's header against Cambridge).

Just had a look and he's joint 2nd in the league so far this season in terms of assists with 3 so he isn't as useless as some are making out.

Not good enough for us right now, cannot understand the new contract and timing of it.

Should be loaned out to a conference side and then see where he is in his development at the end of the season.

To be honest you're right i'm harsh in my opinion there but has it changed? No! I've played to a reasonably good standard myself and against/with some good players!

My biggest gripe with Brough is as I said the other day.... He has no desire to receive the ball! And he has little concept of creating angles to receive passes! 5/6 times I counted the other day Grainger Hery Joyce had the ball while he stood behind their winger... Sometimes a movement doesn't mean you're going to receive a pass but it gives an option and makes the opposition think!

the management obviously see him every day and they're obviously far more qualified to offer him a contract! I just hope his performances improve to level he once showed...

Completely agree with CCU as well Grainger in a flat back 4 would be fine!

Wrong Deano, his job is to lead the team. Defence, IMO comes second. He isn't as bad as most make out and he tends to get a bit of stick for being a bit less 'graceful' at times.

If that means dragging us back into games with crossing or hitting stunning free kicks against champions to give us an early lead, or if that's to head a ball out for a throw in, then so be it.

Think he's a good asset for the squad and I think he does a decent job at leading with a balance of vocally and by example at different times.

Yes, he's captain, but I meant his positional job, ie defending as opposed to assisting. Though both combined is a bonus.

Grainger just about copes as the left of 3 centre halves; as a centreback pairing his positional sense isn't good enough; as an orthodox left back anyone with any pace will slaughter him.
Look at goals conceded last season - Newport's penalty, York's first at BP, Wimbledon's crossfield ball over his head; he simply hasn't coped with the step up in standard. I should imagine Joyce has been given some slack as he's a proven league 2 player; Raynes is a new face entirely which earns him some time before people slaughter him (probably up to the home game with Barnet).

Grainger, Thirlwell, Paynter, Marrow, Kearns, Gillies - if you have any ambition for our club at all, you wouldn't want people like this anywhere near Brunton Park in 2015. For a variety of reasons they've been found wanting - attitude, application, ability, or simply going over 2 years without a league goal. I say let's back young hungry homegrown players, not old lags trying to con a last payday out of us, or spoilt brats from the leagues above unable to recognise that they have neither the work ethic or ability to make it.
Patrick Brough is a teenager making his way in the game - he may improve. Let's give him a chance.

People saying they've never seen him have a good game obviously didn't attend a game in the last two months of last season.
This compulsion to slag players off whenever they have two bad games in a row is very disappointing.

Decent crosser? You need an a to z to play spot the ball after most of his crosses. Agree with the left back conclusion though, quite why he isn't first choice there is beyond me. Maybe we'll get lucky and Grainger will be injured so the lad can get a run there and we'll see some real development
Edited to say that I don't think Grainger has poor positional sense, he is chronically slow. To compensate he stands off the winger and that allows the winger time.

Brough was very good last night. Thought he looked full of confidence, and caused them all sorts of problems.

What impressed me the most about Brough last night was that QPR were (mostly) a team of giants and Brough was able to stand toe to toe with them and win his fair share of battles. It was also with some relief after Cambridge that we didn't go down the tiki-taka route from the back on EVERY single occasion and instead had a viable 'Plan B' to give it long either down the channel from Grainger for example or when Gillespie had ball in hand. In these situations, Brough showed some ability in the air and provided a decent outlet.
