TOPIC: worst and best away ends

Having been to Hartlepool on many occasions now, that has to rank up there as one of the worst away ends in the football league now.
In your experience what is the worst and best away ends in the league. Old grounds and areas too.

I'll go for Belle Vue, Doncaster and Brighton 's old withdean stadium.

Best. .Coventry away was good. Steep stands and great view.
For atmosphere, Rochdale is always a good one.

Covered terrace, good acoustics, behind the goal is what I always though best...so any one with seats, no roof, or a roof like the warwick is out.

I always thought Millmoor was good until they stuck plastic buckets in it. Quite liked Morecambe and Halifax too.

Underhill was the pits. As is Spurs.

Best: Bramall Lane (top tier), Preston, Coventry (edit to add Halifax).

Worst: Hillsboro, Grimsby, Luton.

I have been to many a dive watching Carlisle, but surprising as it may seem, one of the worst away ends I experienced was Goodison Park. Virtually no leg room, the concourse was dangerously packed, and there were pillars obstructing your view every 15 yards or so. The Valley was also poor, with a big pillar bang in the middle of the away end. Have been to Accrington a couple of times and haven't minded it, but I reckon if it was pissing it down on a Tuesday night in the middle of January on that open terrace, it would be many fans first choice for worst ground! I always hated Leeds too, stuck in that cheese wedge miles away from the action.

Best I can ever remember was Preston away in the 70s', especially the cup when we won 1-0.

The old Springfield Park at Wigan was particularly cack.

Vetch Field would take some beating. Stuck in the corner, sh!t view, massive fence and no refreshments.

And in Wales!

I would totally agree with the old Vetch Field being the worst ground, it was quite literally like being in a prison next to a real prison!

Plymouth is more than acceptable, could improve the catering but it's modern, view is unobstructed, decent tiering and a roof, what more could you want. Just a shame our team, in living memory, never turn up.

For atmosphere, Torquay used to be pretty good, small covered stand behind the goals, we've had some decent results there - I remember the 4-3 with the Karl Hawley hat-trick and the bundled in effort from captain fantastic, Kevin Gray.

Yeovil's not bad - Got a great 3-0 recently with McGovern, Livesey and someone else whose name I've forgotten.

Worst I've been to in terms of space and view would have to be Everton, but atmosphere was intense. Worst ground is definitely Accrington or York I would say.

Best would be Huddersfield, Sheffield United or Morecambe (Don't ask just enjoyed it for some reason).

Often hear complaints about the positioning of our away end though

Goodson is an old ground with terracing designed for standing, just sticking seats in wont work, those who go to Anfield will find it disappointing as a home of a big club for similar reasons. Best experience by a long way is Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, great views of pich and we were shown to our seats by stewards (never had that before) bit pricey though.

Exeter/Accrington/York are all very weather dependant really, luckily ive always managed to catch them on good days, but sure there i saw some highlights of a tuesday night game at Stanley this season were it was chucking down, Mansfield maybe, and there away fans looked particularly hacked off!!

Hate Macclesfield - uncovered and we always seemed to get beat! Don't like the tiny ones that are only a few steps or rows of seats deep - Chester, Hartlepool.

Liked Wolves (despite the result) as a big spacious away end and Huddersfield.

Old style - Halifax was always good!

I'd put the Priestfield, Gillingham bottom of the heap out of the current grounds. The same uncovered temporary stand seems to have been there for years now; not a fun place to be when you're losing, the sleet's coming down and it's blowing a gale off the Medway. What an absolute shit hole.

Aldershot, awful ground worse fans say no more!

Remember watching us lose at Macclesfield and being snowed on in the uncovered away end - that must take some beating....

The Withdean was a bit crap also

I've a feeling many of folk on here will say anfield if you manage to get a ticket that's a restricted view. It seriously is like watching a game through the back of postman pats van

wigans old ground was cack

Anfield has to be worst. Life and personal belongings always in danger on way to/from ground.

Newcastle has to be best. Always an easy game.

Blackpool was good before they removed the roof,worst is Middlesbrough when at ayrsome park that corner was shite

The old away end at Hereford's Edgar Street was one the worst I've been to. Miles back from the pitch, shallow terrace, in a corner and big fences, plus we only ever had a handful of fans down there.

York is always a bit disappointing because we usually have a good following but the atmosphere is lost because of the layout and lack of a roof.

I like away ends where you're next to the home fans such as Oldham.

Halifax with it's big roofed terrace is probably the best remaining example of its type.

Edited to add that the ultimate "away" end for me was when they used to hold FA Cup semi-finals at Villa Park and divide the Holte End terrace down the middle. The spectacle on tv when there was a goal with one half of the huge terrace going metal and the other half stood in silence was brilliant - Crystal Palace v Liverpool in 1990 was one of the last like this.

The South Bank at Wolves was also like this for a couple of seasons.

Bristol Rovers has the worst away end that I can recall. Rundown, cold and windswept with a poor view of the pitch.

Best - Preston,Wolves nice and steep

Worst - Hartlepool

AFC Wimbledon last season was terrible - low terrace at the side of the pitch, can barely see anything.

The old terrace at Halifax was basically a slab of Tarmac on a slight angle, terrible!

Old end at Rochdale wasn't very steep and had a terrible fence at the front.

Supermarket End at Hull was a couple of steps and front was below pitch level.

Luton is terrible of those still about!

Best I really like KC Stadium, Hull City. And on our clubs last, and only if I'm right, great atmosphere & good view. AND MK Dons. Spacious comfortable seats, good view. Worst- where do I start. Away fans always get the worst seats eg Gillingham or Leeds. & standing I could go on & on.

Has to be brightons temporary withdean stadium my only visit was possibly 8 years ago 2_2 draw one shite venue .
