TOPIC: What makes a loyal fan ('deserve' a big game ticket?)

What makes a loyal fan ('deserve' a big game ticket?) 09 Sep 2025 19:23 #1

So having seen a lot of stuff about how "day trippers" and "armchair supporters" will be filling Anfield I was wondering what constitutes, in your mind, a "deserving fan".

A couple of posts I have seen on social media state "people who haven't been all season" or "only go to the big games".

It got me thinking....

My mum has a Liverpool ticket. I'm taking her. She went to only 2 games last season, and none so far this season. Does she "deserve" a ticket?

To some it's a simple "no".

But.... She has watched Carlisle since the early 70s. Her and dad went home and away until 75/76 when my brother and I came along. They went when they could, and when financially able. Mum stopped altogether in the late 80s. Instead she paid for our tickets. I'm the 90s she started going again with dad and was a season ticket holder until 2012. She only stopped going when Dad died, she couldn't face it alone. She has now moved South and only goes if I take her.

As soon as the draw was made I called her and asked. She jumped at the chance, if I could indeed get the tickets.

Lots of other stories will be similar, redundancy, family, moving house etc. Most of the people at the game (away end) will be blues, loyal and true. I'm sure some will be first timers. But we all were at one time.

Of course it's not possible to asses who is the most deserving by asking them their cufc history. So how do we move forward. What is a loyal "deserving" fan, and how do the club recognise them.

Id say someone who has been to a few games this season is more deserving than your mum. That said if i was in your position id have done the same as you. There`ll be far less deserving people going so i wouldnt worry about it.

As DB said, really she doesn't deserve a ticket and some one who has been to all of the games will not be going and that is harsh, of course when we went to Wembley there were 27 thousand "fans" there.

If only they came on a weekly basis and then we would have loads of dosh and better players.

I haven't been to a game this season and turned down a ticket, if they had been at home I probably wouldn't have though.

Of course the other rumour of players getting upwards of 30 tickets doesn't help the situation either.

Lots of people are supporters who have good reasons for not getting to games regularly but then are understandably keen to go to a big game.
Who is more worthy/deserving of a ticket?
Someone who goes to 5 games a season but often can't go due to money/work/kids, or someone who goes to 25 games but doesn't have the same commitments?
They might be equally keen fans, but just have different things going on in their lives, but you would have to say the regular attendee should get the ticket.

To me is not as cut and dry as that, she loves Carlisle. But living in the South, 70+, how can she go every week? She has 700? (guess) games behind her, including 12+ years as a season ticket holder.

If she lived in Carlisle and had someone to go with, she would still be there every week.

I appreciate why people who are there supporting the here and now are a priority, but surely loyalty to club runs deeper that the last 8 games?

I think youve set yourself up with a position that you can now use to cause a argument. Its not the persons whos now a regulars fault that your mum is now 70+ and lives hundreds of miles from brunton park. Its just a shame there isnt a ticket for everyone that wants one.

Of course it's no bodies fault she moved (apart from mine, I encouraged her - needed a babysitter ;) ) it's a genuine question, what constitutes a loyal fan? And for many it is the "here and now". And yeah anyone who was a regular to the garbage over the kav era is certainly deserving and loyal.

So how does the club move on?

Should they introduce a loyalty card. And how would that work?

If it had been run, over the last 10 years, the same as many I have seen, my mum would have more points than most and quite possibly be able to get a ticket.

What makes a loyal fan ('deserve' a big game ticket?) 09 Sep 2025 20:18 #14

To be honest I find it quite pathetic all this "I'm a bigger fan than you" bollox.

Obviously someone who goes every week without fail is more deserving of a ticket to a game than someone who goes now and again. Who's to say he/she is a better fan though. They might go every week and twine their arse off for 90 minutes, whereas the now and again fan might go and get behind the team, who's the better fan now?

As far as I'm concerned everyone who goes and watches Carlisle, whether it be weekly, monthly or yearly is a fan, but everyone has differing circumstances (job, money, family, location, etc). I know folk who have season tickets are pretty clueless when it comes to football, they treat a Saturday afternoon at the game as their recreation time. On the other hand I know passionate Carlisle fans who only go once a month due to work and money and who would love to go every week but it just isn't feasible. This doesn't mean they're any worse or better when it comes to supporting the club.

The whole "I'm better than you because I went to so and so game" is quite tiresome and a tad embarrassing in my eyes.

Well they quoted on numerous occasions over the past few seasons that peoples buying history would be taken into account. They used it for the league cup game v Tottenham a few years back but chose not to this time. I still dont think that would have helped people who hadnt been this season but its all by the by now. Maybe they should have realised that weve been getting 4500 fans to home games so far so should have made sure all those fans could if they wish purchase a ticket. Id like to think there werent any regulars still in the queue today when the sold out signs went up but there could very well have been.

Buying history is interesting. Cufc would have no knowledge of the majority of the last 50/100 games I've been to. Most I just turn up on the day and pay (away games mainly). My last home game nobody asked for details, I could have been anyone. I'd say maybe purchased through the ticket office 20 of the last 100 games. That's at a guess.

You can't gauge how much someone loves the club. But the ones that do the most are the ones most deserving I would say. If your Saturday is ruined by a defeat or if your on a high when they win and can't wait to read the match report or watch the goals or whatever then your in the upper echelons but if you only see the result in the paper the following day and it does sod all to your mood I'd say your in the lower. For me it's about how much the club is in your heart.
In my gauge I've been in the upper for 35 years now and definitely deserve one. I'm gutted for anyone that didn't get one who has the club in their heart, especially if people are 'taking their rightful place'and who couldn't give a [censored] about the club.

I have been to every home game this season and have my ticket for Dagenham. I will find it hard to go to games from now on because the cross country season starts on 26 Sep and all my kids run in them. I cant afford to go to away games so the Liverpool game is no different. Good luck to anyone who got a ticket (or two). The more people that go to the game the more money comes back to CUFC in our 40% of the gate receipt.

I got a ticket but my first game this season will be at York.... I try to go to as many games as I can.... but dont live near Carlisle so its quite expensive to go to home or the mainly away games. I have boats and/or planes, traind and hotels to pay for.
A few seasons ago I wanted to go to Sunderland away in the FA Cup but couldnt get a ticket. Someone is always going to claim its unfair.
Other times I have been going to games where they have either been postponed or moved to Mon or Friday night. Ive even missed games when the flight was delayed up to 16 hours.
How did I get a ticket this time well I paid £55 up front for the flexipass for 7 home games before the season started... then its either £7 for the paddock or a £10 for the East Stand on the day.... so I think thats a good deal so if I go to all the games in the paddock thats a total of £104 or £14.85 ish a game a saving of £4.15 a game. So as a fan I put my money up front and get a priority ticket.

So for those who are moaning that its unfair and they go to every game if you put your money where your mouth is and bought a season ticket or the 7 game pass as a true supporter you would have got a ticket.

However, if what I heard is true some season ticket holders were allowed to buy 4 tickets is true I do not think that is fair.... potentially every true supporter there could be 3 fair weather supporters going which I do not believe is fair.

I'll be taking my partner's 12 year old son. He's only ever been to a handful of football games, but they've all involved Carlisle United. He's actually been to more CUFC away games than home ones.

He was a Liverpool fan (without ever really taking much of an interest in them or football), he has relatives who are Tranmere season-ticket holders and most of his schoolmates support either Liverpool or Tranmere.

I'm proud that he has jumped at the chance to come with me to Anfield, sit in the away end and cheer Carlisle on and I hope I can recruit him for life! He probably doesn't deserve it - poor lad! - but I think I deserve the chance to take him and try!

Not all regulars who attend can afford to to put their money (that they havent got) where their mouths are. This doesnt make them a lesser fan in fact it could make them a better fan if they plough everything theyve got left over into buying matchday tickets. Unfortunately it is quite as easy as that despite the fact youd be making a saving if you had the means to buy a season or flexi ticket.

The question is how many who want a ticket can't get one. I would say it won't be that many.

For me I understand circumstances change, moving city, money problems etc but it's the people who support prem teams and will happily spend the weekend in the pub watching sky and then say carlisle are **** wouldn't watch them. The same people on social media who have got tickets and posteda picture of them on Facebook yesterday!!

A guy I worked with, a barcode fan, although never goes and never been to Brunton park in the time I knew him, suddenly wanted tickets and using the reference WE when the draw was made. He was getting a group of similar mates together to go. He got tickets!!
In my eyes a loyal fan is someone that goes to as many games as they can. Also knows the ins and outs of the club, history etc and if they can't go to the games would be trying what they can to listen on the radio.

On the flip side if there are a few stay aways and glory fans who have got tickets for this game and they enjoy it and it gets them back into CUFC and back to Brunton Park in the future is this not for the good of the club in the long term?
As I said yesterday and as a few have said the majority of loyal fans/ regulars who want to go will have got a ticket by some means. I haven't yet heard of anyone complaining they missed out on tickets.

The game might bring new fans back to Brunton park but to the fickle fans if say we got beat 3/4 nil then they would be like I knew carlisle were **** where as to us we are playing Liverpool and its a bonus on the money front, will be interesting though how we cope with our new playing it from the back against even better opposition.

Would it not be better for him to try and get tickets in the home end ? You wouldn't think they'll sell out so should be some available.

One of my main gripes with this is how many "cumbrian Liverpool fans" there is gonna be in the away end when they could've just bought home tickets.

I was saying this to my old man the other day, how long do we think it'll be before the people who don't go often start to complain if we are losing.

I'm not that fussed about the game to be honest, just love the atmosphere at away games especially when there's a few thousand there.

You would think that someone who is a loyal fan at the bottom of the preference queue would know someone who was a season ticket holder CUOSC member or Barnet/QPR ticket stub holder.

Anyway they would still be shouting for tickets if they were £30 each. So the £10 CUOSC membership fee really does not wash.

So we have sold out of tickets, 5,700 ish and we are averaging around 5000 people at a home game (they reckon but god only knows really)

Wonder how many of our loyal 4000/4500 fans who have been for the past few years drivel havent been able to get a ticket? I havent heard of many.

Ive seen people complaining about being unable to get a ticket and they didnt go to the Barnet game cause they thought there would be no need!!

Theres always going to be people disappointed and to be fair i feel the club have handled it reasonably well, it hasnt been the monumental chaos i was expecting!!

Not that i was there but in my book any one who was at the Accrington away game last season should be entitled to free psychotherapy and a life time of free tickets for all matches. i'd rather go to Hartlepool than Liverpool myself.

My away days last season (inc. Accrington) were horrendous. Don't think I saw us win. Did we play out a 0-0 draw at York, or have I have dreamt that up? Was one of the worst games of football I remember, even if it never happened ha!

For anyone who goes to games and says they missed out because they couldn't afford the flexi ticket upfront £55 or the cuosc fee of £10 then if you're that hard up it's probably best not to spend £20 on a Liverpool ticket and worry about the cost of travel /parking etc
