When have I ever quoted possession statistics as an indicator of quality of football? - I think you'll find that will be never.

You could (in theory) have 60% possession and play long ball tactics, hoofing the ball into the corners playing for throw-ins etc. You could also have 30% possession and play sexy attacking football on the counter attack.

You can rack possession stats up by knocking the ball around at the back in your own half, not really aiming to get forward very much. For me, that's as negative as pumping it long all game.

That said, I look at possession statistics sometimes after the game and question exactly how they are compiled? My impression of the game today was we had far more of the ball than Crawley, it looked about 65% / 35% in our favour. I can only remember two brief periods in either half where Crawley were able to string more than three passes together and we had them under constant pressure for most of the game (hence the shots and corner count). It's being extremely generous to say Crawley had six shots, what were they classing as shots from Crawley players, any ball which went vaguely forward in our half?

For me it looks like some halfwit Crawley fan with a pencil was compiling these statistics on the back of one his exercise books from school. I have to say it's fairly typical for away games, although whoever compiles them at Brunton Park does a good, professional job.

Anyway, for the record, the only statistic which arguably can be used as an indicator of quality of performance is the score of the game - and even this is not always reliable.

I agree with NCF, we generally steamroller teams in a way I can't remember for a long time, I think we have been poor in about 3 or 4 games so far, Cambridge was not a 3 nil loss and how we got beat off Scunthorpe i'll never know.

Sometime in the near future we are going to put 7 or 8 past someone.

Ah good shout mississippiblue, was at that game I remember Hawley’s hat trick but not the other scorers.

None of them were black though, they might take offence at being called black when they’re not. Perhaps coloured would be a more apt term...what do you mean we’re not allowed to say that? Okay, people of colour then.
