Brilliant, congratulations lads.

Fishburn would probably benefit from a half-season (or possibly longer) loan at a decent level of senior football next season, Birch and Kinder have already said they've made plans around him not being involved much in next season's youth team set up - he'd learn nothing new. Still be available if needed for the Central League and FA Youth cup competitions plus the occasional bounce game, which we'll hopefully see a few more of next season.

I agree Tufty, and a full pre-season with the first team will do him no harm at all.

Good idea to get time training with the first team and then play men's football loaned out somewhere. To what level and standard I do not know. Great to see a couple of our goalkeepers possibly come through.

In addition these kind of deals with add pressure and competition for places. Technically our number one GK Norman will have 3 other GK's behind him. Players develop at different rates and we have seen the growth of Armer and Tanner come through quickly. The same could be said of Hayden.

A lot of our players have only one year left on their deals so a lot to play for.

Could I ask someone with more knowledge of the youth team - what is the thinking with two of the three pro contracts given to keepers.
Is one far better than the other, meaning he is likely to be on the bench, and the other for the youth team?
Does it also suggest we are going to gamble with one senior keeper?
Presume they are the same age, and just seems a bit odd to me to have two.

These 3 players were given contracts early, probably too early, but that is the nature of things now. Players used to complete their 2 years then sign a contract if they were good enough. Now though any player that shows promise is quickly signed up before they are poached by other clubs.

How are our Galloway and the other lad doing at Leeds?

i don't know anything about these players but DH did say we have 4 or 5 of the best young players in the country!

Yeah but he meant to say county.

Protecting the club's assets probably if big clubs weren't hoovering up every talented youngster they came across they may have waited a year

Open secret that Newcastle were sniffing round Fishburn…

it's always happened, even when players weren't allowed to travel more that 2 Hrs to play for a club, Man U used to hoover them up. Offered them untold riches and safe houses in the Manc area to live, allowing family visits etc.

Man U used to have lots of youth teams playing in lots of leagues every season so they could see as much talent as possible, I remember a story about Matt Jansen not being able to play for us against Man U, in fear of him being hoovered up. Pretty sad that.

CW.

I would like to see BG starting out as number two right now...as he will learn by being in a competitive environment. I think we need to push our young players into these environments. Young players are too much moddlecoddled. If we have offered these three players contracts now we know other clubs are sniffing round. Imagine Fishburn on the bench or even playing 6-10 decent games like Braithwaite...they are off. Can you blame the player or club if decent money is offered.

Some young players leave way to soon it’s of benefit to the club and player to get some first team football under their belts before jumping ship to be stuck in some U23 side then quite often dumped after a while.
Haven’t heard a thing about the 2 players who went to Leeds.

Galloway has not got passed the u-18s. Think he was on the bench for the u-23s one game when it was international week, so difficult to say. First season bound to be hard work getting used to different regime mind.
McCarron looks good every time I see him play, but nowhere near the first team. I think the promotion to the prem has dented his chances, as the step up in u-21 players is a bit scary. He was playing left back quite a bit.
I don't think he will be first choice in the u-23s, so surely time for a loan.

Galloway will be 20 in Jan, equivalent of a 2nd Yr Professional this coming Season, and out of contract next Summer?

Big few months ahead for him…

Yes, you are right CCU. Like I said, Leeds getting promoted has worked against these two (and a few others, like the ones sent out on loan last year, or Casey who has been shipped out to Blackpool).
We have £1M+ players in the 23s, so quality was bumped way up after the two of them signed.
Still think McCarron will do well somewhere, maybe even next season, but struggling to see it being at Leeds to be honest.

Youth players signing a contract are at the learning stage where they need games.
With not having a reserve side, they go from playing thirty or so games a season for the youths to less than a dozen games a season, unless they are in the unlikely situation of commanding a regular place in the first eleven,

Flatcap - agree, and that was the whole point of the question. If there are two, one will presumably have splinters in his arse or play maybe 3 or 4 games (or be loaned out to Kendal).

There are not enough games for any players not being picked regularly for the first team or players coming back from injury. I wish the club could find a way of playing a proper reserve side in a competitive league so the whole squad are always match fit and also the younger players given a chance to improve themselves against other professionals.
