franksidebottom raised an interesting point in relation to this though. Coloured used to be considered the appropriate word and now it isn't. Who specifically made that decision, when did it happen? And what right did that individual have to declare that it was no longer appropriate and what the correct term going forward should be? Look at the context of what people say, as you can generally tell from that whether they are truly racist. Mullen isn't.

I was told at school to use the term coloured to describe a person of that type.

In my referee course I was told to use the coloured rather than black or Asian if I needed to put it in a report.

No ones told me any difference. Black was the word we weren’t allowed to use, it came about from the Stephen Lawrence case (this was in the police training)

So all those people were wrong or has times changed.

To be honest, I think this is a good idea.

Attitudes, ethics and values differ in all the Groups,(including white) by breaking it down will have a positive affect and stop the 'them and us' attitude of some.

Simply grouping everyone who is not white into the BAME Group is not a way forward.

However, making the suggestion to ban it is one thing, offering a solution for everyone to get on-board is another.

My mate in Tanzania, who is coloured, and I had a discussion today. They prefer coloured as due to past history the term black is derogatory.

So we are going to have different rules for different countries.

Well that's a hat trick for the BBC this week after doctoring ''Fairytale in New York''by changing the words slut and faggot and the EU correspondent refering to fisher people instead of fishermen.

I can get people having different views on what words are inappropriate.
However, I cant really understand people who have jobs and that, who have never really heard the notion that the term coloured is at best considered a bit iffy.

That's something that I too have never been able to fathom. They're derivitaves of the exact same word, one a noun and one an adjective.

In US it appears to be the norm to use "African American". Serious question, how do the Americans refer to a person of colour from the West Indies or from UK?
