I often wonder who’s writing her lines.

I think most people would be broken traveling in that yaught for days and the small bed she was in regardless.

If you have Aspergers social events and public speaking aren’t easy and need to be learnt. Sadly she looks anxious/nervous and is ticking and she’s been thrown into the public spotlight very quickly and has been threatened etc. Not easy for someone especially 16 and autistic.

I don’t agree with what Gretna says sometimes but I do respect her. She wants to protect the planet, no harm in that. An austistic person shouldn’t be stoped from doing what they believe in and fair play to her but she needs some support around her.

She did something she belived , credit to her . Alan as a person who likes walking I thought you would be in favour of someone looking to protect the environment ?

It looks like a pure exercise in virtue signalling to me by politicians at the expense of a poor kid who reportedly is on the autistic spectrum.

Climate Change is a serious question which requires complex and difficult answers, which a sixteen year old is in no position to give. Furthermore a sixteen year old should not be expected to address this problem. She should be doing what teenagers do, socialising, making friends, listening to music and generally enjoying her youth. Those youthful years will pass her by as they do for everyone and they cannot be relived once they have gone.

Those politicians should be ashamed of themselves.

My concern is the child a 16 yr old being used, thrust into the public limelight driven to exhaustion her parents should be ashamed.

I don't know where you get the idea I'm anti green energy happy I think it's fantastic but sadly it's a rich persons thing.
One of my pet hates is thousands of houses have sprung up over Cumbria yet not one estate has a heat and power plant of its own.
Every time a new development is announced each house has a boiler guzzling gas installed.
I worked on a development nr Manchester a few years ago it had its own plants burning waste feeding homes with electricity, hot water and heating.
Councils need to be pushing developers up the same route everywhere.

Regarding what she's doing, There's no harm with someone standing up for what they believe in. There's not enough peace and love in the world today, plenty of greed though.

But what does it prove? Does she suggest we all sail to our foreign destinations by million pound carbon fibre yacht? Yes, there is a climate problem but, things like this bring about what sort of change? Virtually nil I would suggest. we would make more of a contribution towards change if we all ditched our televisions, mobiles, tablets, laptops, etc, how much power, and therefore CO2, would this save the planet? But is that likely? No chance! All the young climate rebellion rebels wouldn't part with stuff like that would they? Naivity and hypocrisy reign, along with apathy.

The biggest issue yes the majority of people want to stop climate change they see the impact were having on the environment as bad. Yet when it comes to actions they don't do it , they don't follow simple instructions on recyling , they still take there cars short journeys instead of walking.

People can argue about climate change, there’s no doubting it’s happening, and whether humans are contributing to it to the cows come home but surely doing something to protect the planet and make it better for us and future generations should be a natural instinct. Sadly it isn’t and the natural instinct of most is, I’ll be dead before it has any impact and too selfish etc.

It takes a visualisation of something like Attenborough did about plastics in the ocean for people to take action, etc.

You’re not going to stop people flying, you’re not going to stop people eating beef but there’s many other ways you can help the planet.

I agree whole heartedly Happy. Recycling utterly boils my piss! I'm happy to recycle, I'll sort it all out, I'll take it to the centre and put it in the right bin, not a problem but, it's what seems to happen next that is the problem. There appears nationally to be a great lack of conformity, consistency in recycling, it ends up being exported and then dumped! Utterly ridiculous and makes a mockery of those of us who are happy to recycle, why should we bother? I was in the pub tonight and we touched on such stuff as the young climate rebellion movement. I went to Kendal Calling this year where they had aligned temselves with the ethos of this movement yet, the youth of today who inhabited the campsite on the hill near the arena once again were seemingly only too happy to leave the place looking like a total heap of shite, waste, litter, tents, all manner of detritus, so much for the planet eh? I believe Leeds was similar recently. Apathy and hypocrisy reign I'm afraid!

Laffy!! YAY!!!! Anything we do in the UK, probably the whole of Europe is futile, tokenism maybe if the Indian subcontinent, China and probably one or two other places arent doing things too. Pissing in the wind springs to mind.

There’s an article in the papers today about Indonesia burning all our exported plastic which has been collected by Councils then shipped to the other side of the world-to be burned in huge open air fires with kids and homeless people scavenging amongst it.

When I arrived in Delhi at lunchtime, it was dark-smog.

We are basically arguing with the wrong people because it makes us feel better.

There is, from the information I've seen, no doubt in my mind that climate change will have a devastating effect on the planet. The shift from how we live now to where we need to be will not be a straight line with obvious solutions, there will be contradictions- all the issues about recycling are valid. Up here everyone has numerous bins then at the landfill it all goes in together. But we need to change public opinion and, as Alan hinted at, we need to make it commercially attractive to do the right thing. Sitting back, refusing to do anything and pointing to others, crying look at them, look at them is lazy, unproductive and foolish.
And slagging off wee kids trying to do the right thing is just low.



Andrew, I have no idea what your question is re zero hour contracts as I've posted several times. You are right employment is higher now than when Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel were in the charts as Boris said. I would counter that with
- They have changed the basis of calculation several times. Using the US measure unemployment is over 10%
- Wages have tanked. Self employed income has fallen 26% in the last 10 years

Low wages are bad a mature economy overall because they reduce efficiency, why use a machine when you can hire people. But the machine is more efficient and short term wage savings are overtaken by efficiency and quality gains. That's why people want German, not Ukrainian cars. The real people who benefit are people earning £80k plus who can hire cooks, cleaners and drivers at ever lower rates

Needless to say I disagree with what you say.The world is going through massive structural change-a job for life no longer exists.Most young people will have many jobs in their lifetime.The report I mentioned was an independent review of short term contracts etc-it concluded that they were good for the economy and employee.

Your German car industry example is in my view poor-the car industry is on its knees because of its rigidity.I drove past Nissan yesterday and all I saw were thousands of stored new cars.

I really don't know why people in the UK get so hung up about saving the planet and climate change, and why they think our Government should do something.

Our Governments(s) are, and have been doing something, spending a fortune on alternative green energy, insulating old properties, massive re-cycling schemes (contrary to what Marko says, it does NOT all go to landfill, the landfill tax escalator makes sure of that)

There are also hundreds of on-going environmental schemes, such as re-foresting, and establishing peat-bog (posh name is sphagnum moss). Sometimes to the detriment of humans as flooding is now a major issue.

The UK is well on its way to meet it's 2030/50 emission targets.

The major polluters are the developing Countries, and who are we to tell them what to do, after we have already done it ?

It is predicted that the European and American population growth will slow then decline over the next 50 years, and big increases in African Countries. Everyone has to eat, so how do we accommodate the changing diet of poor people as they become wealthier, and look after the Planet ?or do we just tell em not to ??

Silentstone , i can tell that what you've said their is assumed I knowledge as youve stated the environmental projects such as reforestation is causing flooding , when actually the scheme you mention have been proven to reduce flooding .

Also your argument is basically why should we do something because as no one else is. see where I've condemned or ridiculed Greta.

All I see is a very vulnerable little girl a victim of pushy attention craving "right on" parents " who where prepared to to let their own child take a very risky journey across the Atlantic in the name of massaging their own egos.

As a parent and a grandparent I would never put my family in that kind of situation never mind alone with strangers.

Thankfully she is OK but rolling the dice like this will eventually end in tragedy.

If successful the UK will have managed to reduce the worlds carbon emissions by 0.9%.

I admire her and she’s a strong willed girl that just wants to save the planet.

However I disagree on a lot, I’m not sure what hopes and dreams of hers have been lost due to the current climate change.
