One man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist.

Talking to someone from Zimbabwe recently, he told me that the people thought that the white people were ruining their country but it is when it was ruled by the blacks that the corruption set in and poverty.

I can remember when Smith declared UDI when I was in Aden. We were all put on standby, I quite fancied a trip down to Rhodesia but it never happened

Tyrant, transformed his country from the bread basket of Africa into a basket case.

I'd put him in the same category as Saddam and Gadaffi. You might think they were terrible tyrants but what follows is even worse. Zimbabwe is in a worse state now than at any time since Independence and is in economic ruin. Colonialism wasn't perfect but it brought peace and prosperity.

I think that's spot on. Undeniably a freedom fighter early on, but became a tyrant dictator clinging to power at all costs. Interesting interview on TV with historian Frank Dikotter who has a new book on dictators and one of his defining characteristics is that they concentrate power in themselves, not, as a democracy does, distribute it among agencies to create checks and balances, and by this standard Mugabe was a classic dictator.

An interesting statistic that I read earlier.

"One statistic sums up what Robert Mugabe did for his people: At independence in 1980, the average life expectancy for a Zimbabwean was about 60 years old; by 2006, that had dropped to 37 for men and 34 for women, the shortest in the world."
