Big metal bird still doesn't cut it for me, not as bad as Bergkamp but I would rather put my destiny in my own hands.

Flew to "the former Yugoslavia" - Pulia - in 1987...it was a military airfield with a hanger as the arrivals hall and some conveyor belt contraption rigged up for baggage reclaim. There was "no photos" camera signs everywhere ......bit unnerving . Won't be that bad .....will it?

Talking of primitive airports I flew to Dagali airport in Norway about 25 years ago on a charter to go skiing at Geilo. The terminal was a wooden hut not much bigger than a garden shed. It's probably not the smallest airport I've flown too which could be Saranac Lake near Lake Placid in New York State. I got off the plane at night with my luggage and realised there was absolutely nothing there. I had to telephone for help to get to the hotel I'd booked.

Carlisle Airport will be luxury in comparison.

Flew from Blackpool to the IOM several times - COMED Aviation, you had to lift your feet going over the Pepsi-Max. Not saying the planes were small but if there was a SW wind, you flew there at 45 degrees.

Business needs easy and convenient transport, not only to London. There is a growing number of destinations from Southend: southendairport.com/destinations

How can a City operate and grow in the 21st Century without an Airport ?

When is your destiny ever in your own hands using transport? On the train or the bus you're at the mercy of the professional driving it.

Reading about the court case of the horrible tragedy with the minibus being hit by a lorry - maybe driving a car you're in control of your own vehicle (barring any malfunction) but what about the risk of the idiot actions of others? Not much chance of that happening in the sky.

Anyway, each to their own but I couldn't live or work without air travel.

p.s. for the nervous fliers, on a flight last year, after some sever turbulence, the pilot came over the tannoy and said everybody stay calm etc with the classic line - "if anything is going to go wrong a flight, it's generally going to be in the first 30 seconds". I was a good flier but now have a sweaty 30 seconds after take-off now!

If going to the EU flights to Dublin could be a winner after Brexit..

Unless your going to Dublin theres not much point going to Dublin anyway. Doubt theyll have any routes that you cant fly to from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle or Manchester direct from.

I like a train trip to London or wherever.
I am not over-keen on flying , but it’s all the fannying around that I dislike more than the fear of plummeting out the sky.
Probably doesn’t help that I tend to fly on budget airlines with no leg room etc.
You have a 2:5 hour flight to get to Spain, but by the time you get through everything that goes with it, it’s not exactly a barrel of laughs

I'd love to see flights to Dublin and Belfast from Carlisle. I bet they would prove far more popular.

Hopefully this week will bring some clarification from Stobarts on plans for Carlisle Airport. It was widely assumed that they were talking to Flybe about them launching flights to Southend, Belfast and Dublin probably using Flybe's franchise partner Eastern Airways.

The news of Stobarts' interest in buying Flybe is likely to cause a major hiccup in the negotiations. Flybe has been put into a takeover situation against its will which gives them extra expense paying City advisors. If I was Flybe I'd tell Stobarts to run the flights themselves and deny them access to the Flybe booking network.

I wouldn't be surprised if Stobarts now ended up wet-leasing a SAAB 340 from Loganair so that it can hit its 4th June start date for flights to operate. Loganair have a base in Glasgow so it wouldn't be too difficult but the pr might need some managing given Loganair's Scottishness.

All speculation of course but for anyone interested in aviation it's like a tv drama with the twists and turns.

I think demand will be such that a SAAB will be big enough.

Stobarts have 'chosen' Loganair. Haha they had no other realistic choice after the relationship with Flybe broke down after the unwelcome takeover developments. Logainair have a spare plane from next week as their Durham Tees Valley to Aberdeen route comes to an end. As I suggested this SAAB 340 will be relocated to Carlisle along with any Teesside based maintenance staff.

With Loganair's main base in Glasgow, this works from a logistics point of view.

I can see the Belfast?Dublin ones being good. I just don't see the point of the Southend one.

6.50 train to London from Carlisle - Will get you in to Euston at 10.09 (£119 with no railcards)
6.50 plane will get you into Southend 815 (£56.50) then train 8.35(£16.90)(If its quick getting out) gets in at 9.33.

So going by plane and getting no discounts on tickets saves you £46 and 36 minutes. Not worth the hassle for me and the chances are you'll get cheaper train tickets and a railcard on top. Handy for the odd times we play Southend though.

I'd rather ditch the London one and bring in the Isle of man.

Why would anybody want to fly from Southend to Carlisle at half one on a Saturday afternoon the market there was in offering a flight to do a journey that couldnt be done on the train ie a 9pm departure say

Just on a personal level CCU, if we have a flight to the outskirts of London, it’s like calling Newcastle Carlisle, then why not Isle of Man that’s not accessible by rail. A lot of Cumbrians go to the Isle of Man.

it's not a case of why does Carlisle need an Isle of Man flight it is a case of the Isle of Man could do with a Carlisle flight

the closest UK mainland to the Isle of Man is the South West of Scotland and Cumbria but getting there is a pain in the arse...

there used to be flights to Blackpool but they stopped

there are flights to newcastle but they go via Belfast and they are extortionate same with Glasgow and Edinburgh.......

so the closest option is Manchester

So although the Isle of Man is only 80 miles from Carlisle it takes a day and usually an overnight hotel stop to do it

Is the train from southend one you have to book in advance or is it one you just get a ticket when you arrive and jump on the next one like the underground?

As they can now by rail? The first train arrives 09:12 and the last leaves at 19:30.
The plane would have had a market if it was for journies that weren’t possible by rail.

I’m sure the Irish flight could stop off on IOM if there was demand.

Carlisle airport's IATA destination code is CAX. I suppose all the best ones have already gone so they're left with literally the crappiest.

The SAAB 340 will have a 33 seat configuration. Let's hope they can fill them all.

I flew into Pulia during the 80s for a family holiday in Porec? and got told off for taking photos of those planes.

Its about £30 return from Liverpool St to Southend airport and takes an hour.

Wouldn't save time or money as we have a two tother card where we get 1/3 off so usually £150 for 2 tickets.

Would be good for a novelty though.

Theres also the time at the start of the journey - check in etc. How long before an internal flight do you have to be there these days?

Would quite fancy the dublin or belfast one mind.
