I think most folk would happily pay a couple quid more for the flight, compared to say the Bus/Boat combo, when you factor in the time saving and ease?

If all goes well this time next year I'd like to see them extend destinations, even for a couple of summer months to say Exeter for onwards into Devon or Isle of Man or even up to Inverness.

When you see CLDA, you can see instantly that it’s not geared up for larger capacity flights. It is obvious, however, that they see it as an opportunity for passengers to connect to destinations beyond (there’s a big board by the departure gate saying that from Carlisle you can connect to 100+ destinations).
It did get me thinking... most times I fly abroad, it’s via some hellhole like MCR - I detest that airport and hate driving there. More often than not I pay for parking and an overnight hotel. Given that CLDA is ‘only’ an hours drive for me, the parking is free and it’s a no-nonsense airport, I’ll seriously consider using it to connect. As long as the figures work out favourably, I reckon it’ll be worth the small inconvenience of changing flights at Southend or wherever.

I overheard the attendant on my return flight saying that the numbers and feedback have been very good so far - the big test will be over winter.
Similar sized aircraft doing ‘seasonal’ routes to other UK destinations may be a possibility, I guess we’ll wait and see. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I reckon a Southampton route would be a winner for the cruise market alone.

Was hoping to give the airport a go this week to head over to Dublin on business. Unfortunately I won't be able to as there are no flights that I can see that go over and back on the same day. I'll just have to look elsewhere.

Yes that's the draw back , you cant go for the day which is poor. I think theres a flight about 8am or 9am so why no return say 6 or 7pm.

Early days but if they are selling flights at £50 including tax at that occupancy, they are absolutely burning money.The taxi ride to the airport will be more profitable!
They need a lot more than 3 or 4 flights per day-hence the new routes proposal.Trouble is unless the Charter operators can see regular and consistent volume, it’s not going to happen.Look at Thomas Cook today-they are bordering on bankruptcy.Ryanair-too much capacity.Flybe-broken as we know.
I think the future will be freight and military.Then the cunning plan hatched all those years ago is complete!

They are cutting the Saturday flights to Belfast and Dublin. The airport will make significant cost savings as a result by only opening for passengers on 4 days.

Not quite. They are using a spare plane for the other flights today. Having just one ageing turboprop for operations always made this a certainty at some stage. Fortunately everything went smoothly from a safety perspective.

Been in Cornwall and stayed near Newquay airport, couldnt believe the number of flights in and out by Easyjet and Flybe...training planes and helicopters. Busy every day.

You might be right that freeports are misused by tax evaders etc. I wouldn't argue with that. However many of the most successful economies on the planet have freeports, Singapore, Switzerland and Luxembourg, which is in the EU of couse. (No doubt with the blessing of Jean-Claude Juncker).

This might be what is needed to get some traction at the airport.
As for tax havens, Ireland is one big one, as is HK.Most low tax countries are wealthy because err...they don’t need to raise a lot of tax.

On checking, the Luxembourg and Geneva freeports are fancy art warehouses next to the airport and are owned by a guy called Bouvier with some allegedly dodgy business practices.

Am I right in thinking that if the airport is under the umbrella of the Stobart group that it can offset its losses against the group and actually save them money due to corporation tax as sure I read that's what some football league owners do?
